Write down the remaster’s full title, the storefront where you own it, your Windows version, key PC specifications, and the exact error message or symptom. Note whether the problem started after a game, graphics-driver, or Windows update. These details help distinguish a game-specific issue from a system or configuration change.

Next, open the publisher’s official support page and compare your PC with the game’s minimum requirements. Capcom’s Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster troubleshooting guide, for example, begins by asking players to check requirements. A system below minimum specifications can cause poor performance or prevent a game from launching, but the relevant requirements vary by title.
Why won’t the game launch?
- Check the game’s official support notes and requirements. Confirm that your Windows version and hardware meet the publisher’s stated requirements. Look for title-specific known issues before trying advice written for another remaster.
- Update the game and graphics driver. Install available game updates, then check for a graphics-driver update from your GPU or PC manufacturer’s official support site. Rockstar’s general PC launch troubleshooting also points players toward game updates and graphics drivers. Avoid third-party driver download sites.
- Verify the installed game files. If your storefront has a file verification or repair option, run it and then restart the PC before testing again. This is a low-risk way to check for damaged or missing files, not a guaranteed fix.
- Test after each change. If the game still will not launch, record any new error message and move on to the publisher’s guidance for that exact title rather than stacking several unverified changes.
How do I fix a black screen or wrong resolution?
First check the game’s own display menu or its official support article for a supported resolution or video-mode setting. If you cannot reach the menu, a documented launch option may let you start in a safer display mode. Do not assume a launch command found online works for every remaster. For example, -autoconfig is associated with Source-engine games and should not be treated as a universal reset switch. Use a command only when the publisher or storefront documents it for your title, and remove it after testing if it does not help.
Why does the game keep crashing?
Check the requirements, install game and graphics-driver updates, and look for title-specific compatibility guidance. If the crash began after changing an overlay, capture tool, or other software, temporarily disable that one item and test. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether it mattered.

Hardware configurations can also be relevant. Capcom notes that multi-GPU setups may cause compatibility issues in the games covered by its Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster troubleshooting and Resident Evil 4 troubleshooting guidance. Treat disabling that configuration as a check for those documented cases, not as a general instruction for every remaster.

If a crash persists, follow the publisher’s instructions for collecting diagnostics. Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 troubleshooting guide asks players with continuing problems to provide diagnostic details and configuration information. Why isn’t my controller recognized?
Check the game’s own support listing or settings first. Steam Support cautions that controller compatibility is not automatic: “Any Steam game can be played while in Big Picture mode, though not all Steam games support the use of a controller.” Its Big Picture controller documentation lists official Microsoft Xbox controllers among those supported by Big Picture mode, but that does not mean a particular game accepts them.
If the game does support your controller, connect it before launching and check the game’s input settings and the storefront’s controller configuration options. If Steam recognizes the device but the game does not, confirm that the game itself supports that model and input method before buying another controller.

When should you try compatibility modes or advanced edits?
Use compatibility settings or configuration changes only when the publisher documents them for the exact game and version. Rockstar’s Max Payne PC troubleshooting article discusses compatibility modes and resolution changes for older Windows releases, including Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. That guidance was last updated in 2023 and does not establish that the same steps work on current Windows releases.
Be especially cautious with registry changes and community workarounds. Rockstar labels registry editing risky and notes that some community sound fixes are untested by the publisher. Do not use registry edits, unofficial patches, operating-system downgrades, or boot-configuration changes as first-line fixes. Prefer a reversible, publisher-documented setting and change only one thing at a time.
