“Connection invalid” is not one universal error. It can describe a browser or TLS failure, a Windows network-stack problem, an Apple Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) connection issue, or CyberSource’s -102 ERR_CONNECTION_INVALID. Start by copying the complete message, code, URL, app name, and device. Then test another website, a private browser window, another browser, another device, and another network. Those comparisons show whether the fault is limited to one page, browser, computer, router, or service. Only after that should you clear site data, disable extensions, check VPN and proxy settings, renew network addresses, or reset Windows or macOS networking.
What does “connection invalid” mean?
The wording identifies a symptom, not a diagnosis. A browser may reject an invalid TLS response or certificate; a security extension may block a page; a computer may have stale DNS or a damaged Winsock configuration; or an enrollment/API application may report that its own service connection is unusable. The exact code and screen determine which instructions apply.

How do I identify the exact error before changing settings?
Record the complete text rather than searching only for “connection invalid.” Include the page or endpoint, browser or app version, operating system, device type, and whether other users or devices are affected. A screenshot can help, but copy the code as text so punctuation and underscores are preserved.

How can I tell whether the site, browser, device, or network is at fault?
Run the comparisons below in order. Each result narrows the fault without changing system-wide settings.
- Open an unrelated website. If other sites work, the original site, its certificate, or a network policy targeting that domain may be responsible.
- Use a private/incognito window. A successful private-window load points toward cookies, cached data, or an extension in the regular profile.
- Try another browser. If only one browser fails, concentrate on its extensions, profile data, proxy configuration, or update status.
- Try another device on the same network. If every device fails, investigate the router, modem, captive portal, DNS service, or ISP rather than one computer.
- Try a different network. A phone hotspot is a useful comparison. If the page works there, the original Wi-Fi, wired network, firewall, or DNS path is implicated.
Network restrictions can prevent access to a site even when the computer reports that it is connected. A successful comparison does not prove which component is broken; it tells you where to focus the next checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I fix a browser invalid-response or SSL error?
Work from the least disruptive browser changes to operating-system changes. Recheck the page after each step so you know which change mattered.
Clear data for the affected site
In the browser’s privacy or site-settings screen, remove cookies and stored data for the failing domain, then close and reopen the tab. If the browser offers a time range, start with that site rather than deleting every login and preference. Clear cached files if the error persists. You may need to sign in again.
Disable extensions temporarily
Turn off every extension, restart the browser, and load the page. VPN, ad-blocking, traffic-filtering, and security extensions can alter or block TLS requests. If the page works, re-enable extensions one at a time until the failure returns, then update, reconfigure, or remove the identified extension.
Check VPN and proxy settings
Disconnect a VPN for a controlled test. In the operating system and browser network settings, verify that an unexpected manual proxy is not enabled. Corporate or school networks may require a managed proxy; do not delete a required configuration without consulting the administrator. A VPN or proxy that changes only one browser can explain why another browser succeeds.

Flush DNS and renew the connection
DNS can retain an obsolete or incorrect address. On Windows, open an elevated Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns. Reconnect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and try again. If the problem returns only on one network, compare its DNS settings with a network that works rather than changing every device immediately.
Verify date, time, and time zone
Set the computer to obtain the date, time, and time zone automatically, then synchronize it. A clock that is substantially wrong can make a valid certificate appear expired, not-yet-valid, or issued in the future. Restart the browser after correcting the clock.
Update the browser without changing experimental TLS flags
Install the browser’s current stable update and restart it. Avoid changing experimental protocol or certificate flags unless the exact error and vendor documentation identify that setting; forcing an older protocol can make modern sites refuse the connection and can weaken security.
Could antivirus or a security extension be blocking the page?
Yes. Web-protection components can intercept traffic, and a missing or inactive browser add-on can cause a security product to reject a page. WithSecure documents a case in which Browsing Protection blocks a website when its required browser extension is not installed or active.
- Open the security product’s browser-extension or web-content section and check whether its extension is installed and enabled in the affected browser.
- Review blocked-site, HTTPS-scanning, parental-control, and category-policy entries for the domain.
- Use the product’s supported exception or configuration procedure only if you trust the site and your administrator permits it.
- Do not permanently disable web protection just to bypass an error. If the policy or extension state is unclear, contact the security product’s support channel.
How do I reset Windows networking safely?
Use the targeted reset first. It repairs common Winsock, TCP/IP, DHCP, and DNS state while preserving more of your saved configuration than a full Network reset.
Run the targeted commands
Save open work, then open Command Prompt as administrator. Run these commands separately:

Restart Windows after the commands finish. Reconnect to the network and repeat the browser comparison. If a command reports an error, record the text; do not skip randomly between resets because the message can identify a permissions or adapter problem.
Check adapter and address settings
In Settings > Network & internet, confirm the expected Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter is enabled and shows an address. A manually configured static IP, DNS server, proxy, VPN client, or virtual switch may be intentional. Record those values before changing them, particularly on work computers.

Use Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset only after the targeted commands and configuration checks fail. A full reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, then reinstalls them after restart. You may need to recreate VPN clients, virtual switches, static IP assignments, custom DNS, and proxy settings; saved Wi-Fi networks can also require reconnection. Record configuration details and obtain administrator approval before selecting Reset now.
How do I fix the error on macOS?
macOS troubleshooting follows the same scope test but uses different controls. First toggle Wi-Fi off and on, restart the Mac, restart the modem/router, and test a phone hotspot. If only the Mac fails, continue locally; if every device fails, investigate the network or ISP.
Renew the DHCP lease
Open System Settings > Network, select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, choose Details, open TCP/IP, and select Renew DHCP Lease. Reconnect and test the page.
Review DNS, proxies, and VPNs
In the selected network service, inspect DNS and Proxies for unexpected manual entries. Disconnect a VPN for diagnosis, unless it is required by your organization. Restore managed settings after testing rather than leaving a work proxy or tunnel disabled.

Flush the macOS DNS cache
Open Terminal and run:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder
Enter an administrator password when prompted, then quit and reopen the browser.
Use service removal only as a later step
Removing and re-adding a network service can clear persistent configuration, but it may forget saved Wi-Fi passwords. Before doing so, ensure you know the password and any enterprise settings. Install pending macOS updates and test Safe Mode or a new user profile if only one account still fails.
What should I do on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device?
Restart the device and test a different Wi-Fi network or cellular connection before resetting saved settings. If another network works, the original router, DNS service, or access policy is the likely scope.
iPhone and iPad
On current iPhone and iPad software, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN settings. Have the Wi-Fi password and any required VPN details available before confirming.

This message belongs to Apple Automated Device Enrollment (ADE), often encountered through a device-management enrollment workflow, rather than to a normal browser page. Microsoft’s March 30, 2026 guidance says the issue occurs when there is a connection problem between the device and the Apple ADE service.

What does CyberSource error -102 ERR_CONNECTION_INVALID mean?
CyberSource’s CPM guide defines -102 ERR_CONNECTION_INVALID as either an unrecognized connection handle or an inability to connect to the CPM Server. It is an API/CPM condition, not the browser’s ERR_CONNECTION_INVALID wording.
Recommended Free Tools
- Wait briefly and attempt a new connection.
- Verify that the handle submitted to the CPM API is the one returned by
LCC_CONNECTIONand that it has not been reused after disconnecting. - Check application network reachability and whether the CPM server is operating.
- If the error continues, provide the exact code, operation, handle lifecycle, timestamps, and server logs to CyberSource support.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does one website show “connection invalid” while other sites open?
The failing domain may have a certificate or server problem, or a proxy, DNS filter, or security policy may target that domain. Compare the same URL on another network and check the site’s status through its official support channel before changing system-wide settings.
Will clearing browser cookies delete my saved passwords?
It depends on the browser and the data category selected. Remove data for the affected site first and review the confirmation dialog; passwords stored in a separate password manager are usually unaffected, but site sessions and preferences may be cleared.
Can an incorrect computer clock really cause an SSL error?
Yes. Certificate validity is checked against the device clock, so a wrong date, time, or time zone can make a valid certificate appear expired or not yet valid. Enable automatic time and time-zone synchronization, then restart the browser.
Why does a network reset make my VPN stop working?
A full reset removes network adapters and settings, including components used by VPN clients and virtual switches. Reinstall or reconfigure the VPN and restore any static IP, custom DNS, or proxy values recorded before the reset.
