Start with a five-minute diagnosis
Do these checks in order. Each step separates a software configuration problem from a connection problem, so you do not replace a cable for a rendering bug or blame the game for a display handshake failure.

- Update the game. The latest available build should be installed on the platform where the fault occurs. Official patches have changed controller handling, texture rendering, frame-rate behavior, and display effects.
- Describe the symptom precisely. A character performing the wrong action is a mapping problem; one button doing nothing is a missing-input problem; a controller absent from the menus is a detection problem; a black texture, flicker, or pixelated surface is a rendering problem; a television reporting No Signal is a physical or handshake problem.
- Test the other graphics mode. Switch between Classic and HD Graphics Mode and reproduce the same scene. If the defect appears in only one mode, it is almost certainly an in-game rendering path rather than an HDMI fault.
- Reduce the connection variables. Attach one controller directly to the console or PC, bypassing an unpowered USB hub, dock, adapter, or receiver. For a display test, connect the system directly to the television or monitor.
- Retest after every change. Record which mode, controller, port, and display input were used. This prevents two fixes from masking each other.
Install the patches before troubleshooting hardware
A number of faults described by players were addressed in official updates. The dates below identify what each patch changed; availability can vary by platform, so use your platform’s normal update mechanism and confirm the installed build in the title’s information screen.

Patch 4 says it includes bug fixes across all platforms. If your platform reports that no update is available but the problem matches an item in a newer patch, note the platform and installed version when contacting support; do not assume a cable or controller can supply a patch that has not reached your device.

Understand the control schemes and default mappings
Aspyr’s Modern Controls Overview, published February 8, 2024, states that modern controls are adapted from the Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld control schemes. It provides separate layouts for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. The same physical button therefore cannot be expected to perform the same named action on every platform, and a layout that feels wrong may simply be a different default rather than a failed controller.

Most inputs can be remapped in the game’s Options menu. Treat the on-screen labels as authoritative for the platform and controller currently connected rather than relying on a remembered console layout.
Fix an incorrect or missing button mapping
When the wrong action happens
- Open the title’s Options menu and enter the controls or controller-mapping page.
- Verify the selected control scheme before editing individual actions. A scheme change can make every button appear wrong at once.
- Select the action that produces the wrong result and assign the desired button. Repeat for only the affected actions.
- Back out of the menu far enough for the game to save the configuration, then test in a safe area where the action is obvious.
- If the mapping changes back after restarting, remove additional controllers and repeat the assignment with one device attached. A second device or platform-level remapper can capture the input before the game receives it.
When one action does nothing
First determine whether the button is absent from the game’s input display or merely unresponsive during play. If it is shown in the mapping screen, assign it to a different physical button and test again. A working reassignment points to a device-specific mapping conflict. If no button is detected, reconnect the controller directly, restart the game, and test with another controller if available.

When the game does not detect the controller at all
- Close the game completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Disconnect every other controller, steering device, virtual input device, and USB hub.
- Connect the controller directly to the console or PC and wait for the operating system or console to acknowledge it.
- Launch the game with that single controller already connected.
- On PC, use a wired XInput-compatible USB controller as the simplest fallback. It removes Bluetooth pairing, battery, receiver, and translation-layer variables and gives the game a conventional XInput device to enumerate.
- Once input works, add other devices one at a time until the conflicting device is identified.
A wired controller is a diagnostic fallback, not a guarantee that every wireless model is unsupported. If the wired device works while the wireless one does not, the fault is in pairing, firmware, the wireless receiver, or an input-translation layer rather than in the game’s basic control system.
Address lag, navigation, and platform-specific input failures
Lag or delayed response
Update first, then test a direct connection. On Android, Patch 2 specifically lists controller lagging and navigation fixes. If delay remains, close background applications, reconnect the controller, and test with only one input device. A delay that occurs only after the game was minimized is a distinct Android case: Patch 4 records a fix for controller-input failure after minimizing, so reproduce the issue by launching fresh and by returning from another app.
Menus highlight or move incorrectly
Menu highlighting and navigation are not the same as a failed action button. On Android, Patch 2 addressed both navigation and menu-highlighting behavior. After updating, use the directional control alone in the menu, then test action buttons. If navigation works but selection does not, remap the selection action rather than replacing the controller.

Inverse-controller settings
Patch 3 records fixes for inverse-controller settings on iOS. If an axis behaves opposite to the chosen preference, open Options, check the inverse setting for that axis, turn it off and on once, save, and test again. Do not compensate by remapping every button; an axis inversion is a setting-state issue.

PS4 touchpad mapping on iOS
Patch 3 also records a PS4 touchpad mapping error on iOS. Install that update, reconnect the PS4 controller, and test the touchpad as a separate input. If other buttons work but the touchpad does not, report the iOS version, game build, controller model, and whether the device is connected by Bluetooth or cable.

An HDMI cable cannot repair a texture, shader, or frame-rendering defect that occurs inside the game. Conversely, reinstalling the game will not correct a damaged cable, an incorrect television input, or a handshake failure caused by an adapter.

Use both modes as a controlled test rather than treating one as universally correct. Classic reproduces the original visual presentation, while HD uses the remastered rendering path. The practical difference for troubleshooting is that a defect may be isolated to one renderer.

Fix black textures, missing textures, and pixelation
- Install the latest patch and restart the game after the update completes.
- Return to the same level, room, or object where the defect appeared; a one-time loading artifact is not enough to establish a persistent fault.
- Switch graphics mode and revisit the location. Note whether the defect follows Classic, HD, or both.
- Check resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and HDR settings. Keep the display at a supported combination rather than mixing an unusual refresh rate with an HDR mode your monitor does not accept reliably.
- If the issue remains inside the game while menus and other applications display normally, report it as a rendering or texture defect through Aspyr support, including the platform, build, mode, scene, and reproduction steps.
Patch 2 records fixes for black textures, missing textures, and pixelation. A remaining instance after updating should therefore be described with its exact scene and graphics mode instead of being reported only as a generic black screen.

Fix rendering flicker and visual-effect errors
Patch 3 records a visual-rendering flicker fix, and Patch 4 records additional visual-effect and rendering fixes. Update before changing display hardware, then test Classic and HD independently. If flicker appears only in the game and the display never reports lost signal, keep the investigation in the software layer. If the entire display drops out, continue to the HDMI checks below.
Use brightness, resolution, refresh rate, and HDR deliberately
Patch 3 added a brightness slider. Adjust it only after confirming the display is receiving a stable signal; brightness cannot restore a missing texture or a lost HDMI handshake. For a dark but otherwise stable image, set the game’s brightness to a neutral level, verify the monitor or television picture mode, and retest with HDR temporarily disabled if the display behaves inconsistently. Record the original values so you can restore them after the test.
When an HDMI cable is the right fix
Use a cable test only when the symptom indicates signal integrity: a television reports No Signal, the image repeatedly loses sync, the display goes black when the game changes resolution or refresh rate, or the problem disappears when another input device is selected. In that situation:

- Remove hubs, splitters, capture devices, and adapters from the path.
- Connect the system directly to the display and select the correct HDMI input.
- Test a certified High Speed HDMI cable known to work with another device.
- Try a different HDMI port on the display, then restore the intended resolution, refresh rate, and HDR combination one setting at a time.
If menus, other games, and the operating system remain visible while only a texture or effect in Tomb Raider I–III Remastered is wrong, stop replacing cables. That pattern points to the game’s rendering path or a patch-specific defect.
Platform checklists
PC
- Update the game, then launch with one controller attached.
- Prefer a direct wired XInput-compatible USB controller for the detection test.
- Remove extra controllers and unpowered hubs before remapping.
- Check Options for the selected scheme and remap only the incorrect actions.
- Compare Classic and HD, then verify display resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and HDR.
- Use a direct HDMI connection only if the monitor actually loses signal.
PlayStation
- Install the newest console update for the game.
- Confirm the PlayStation mapping shown in Options rather than using Xbox or Switch button assumptions.
- Test the controller directly and check whether the issue is a touchpad-specific mapping or a general input failure.
- Compare graphics modes and note whether flicker or textures fail in one mode.
Xbox
- Update the title and verify the Xbox control scheme.
- Reconnect one controller directly, then remap the affected action.
- Check the display input and resolution only when the screen loses signal; do not treat an in-game texture defect as an HDMI fault.
Switch
- Update the title and test both handheld and docked use if the fault is dock-related.
- Read the Switch mapping in Options before changing assignments.
- If the docked display loses signal, test the dock’s direct HDMI path; if only textures are wrong, compare graphics modes instead.
iOS
- Update the game and iOS, reconnect the controller, and select the intended scheme.
- Test inverse-controller settings separately from button mappings.
- If using a PS4 controller, test the touchpad after Patch 3 and record whether other inputs work.
Android
- Install Patches 2, 3, and 4 or the current cumulative build offered for the device.
- Test navigation, menu highlighting, and gameplay input separately.
- Reproduce the controller failure both immediately after launch and after minimizing and returning to the game.
- For black textures, pixelation, or missing textures, compare Classic and HD before changing cables or display hardware.
What to include in a support report
If the problem survives the update, direct-connection, remapping, and graphics-mode tests, make the report reproducible. Include:
- Platform and exact controller model.
- Wired, Bluetooth, or other connection method.
- Game build and operating-system version.
- Selected control scheme and any remapped actions.
- Graphics mode, resolution, refresh rate, brightness, and HDR state.
- The level, room, menu, or object where the problem appears.
- Whether the issue occurs after a fresh launch, after minimizing, or only after changing modes.
- Whether a second controller, a different display input, or a direct HDMI connection changes the result.
This information distinguishes a mapping conflict from a platform input failure and a rendering defect from a physical signal loss, allowing support to route the report to the correct fix.
