When a controller works in Windows but one game ignores it, the trail usually leads to that game’s launcher overlay or input configuration. When Windows and several games ignore the controller, check the handheld’s controller mode, manufacturer software, and connection first. This split is an inference from the failure modes that Microsoft, ASUS, Lenovo, and Steam each document separately. No single vendor states it as a rule. Work through the layers below in order, and change one setting at a time so you know which change helped.
The examples use the ASUS ROG Ally and the Lenovo Legion Go because both manufacturers publish official controller guidance. Menu names, reset shortcuts, and update paths differ between models and generations, so confirm your exact model before following any step.
Pin down the failure before changing settings
Answer four questions first:
- Do the built-in controls move the Windows cursor and menus?
- Does the game respond to input outside its launcher?
- Does the problem affect one game or every game?
- Is an external controller connected at the same time?
Use the answers to choose a starting point:

Step 1: Check Windows Xbox mode and the home app
Microsoft’s setup path for Xbox mode on handhelds is documented in Microsoft Support’s full-screen gaming guide. To check your configuration:
- Open Settings > Gaming > Xbox mode.
- Select an installed, supported home app.
- Optionally turn on entry into Xbox mode after sign-in. Windows says this limits background processes while the setting is enabled.
Xbox mode has its own requirements: Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, in a supported market. Microsoft Support describes it this way: “Xbox mode is a console inspired, dedicated gaming experience that gives players a controller-optimized way to navigate and play on Windows.”

Several behaviors can look like a broken launcher but are expected in this mode:
- Only one window is shown at a time.
- Some apps do not support full screen and appear against a black background.
- Win + F11 returns you to the desktop. Microsoft also lists Task View and Game Bar routes.
If a launcher’s window behaves this way but the game responds to the controller, the problem is not in the launcher. Move on without changing launcher settings.
Step 2: Set controller priority on the ROG Ally
ASUS says some games default to the built-in controller even when another controller is connected. To test whether the external controller takes priority, follow the steps in ASUS’s ROG FAQ:
- Open Command Center.
- Disable Embedded Controller.
- Launch the game again and check whether the external controller is now selected.
The ROG Ally supports several major launchers, including Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, EA App, and GOG Galaxy. A supported launcher does not mean every game on it has identical controller support, so a working launcher does not confirm a working game.

Desktop Mode and Armoury Crate SE
Armoury Crate enables Desktop Mode, which lets you use the built-in gamepad as a mouse. If Armoury Crate was uninstalled and that behavior disappeared, ASUS recommends reinstalling Armoury Crate SE from the product support site. Confirm your device model and software version before you apply the steps in the ASUS Global FAQ.
Xbox Cloud Gaming
The ASUS FAQ states that Auto Mode is unsupported for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Choose Gamepad Mode or Desktop Mode manually.
Step 3: Match the Legion Go controller mode to its attachment state
The mode behavior below comes from Lenovo’s Legion Go Gen 2 user guide. Confirm your generation first. Shortcuts, reset combinations, and controller behavior are not interchangeable across Legion Go models.

Reconnecting a controller
If a controller was connected to another device, disconnect it from that device before reconnecting it to the tablet. Attaching the controller to the tablet is the convenient reconnection method that Lenovo documents.

Switching between X-input and D-input
The Gen 2 guide gives a shortcut for switching between X-input and D-input. Use the shortcut from the guide for your exact generation, not one from another model’s page.
Reset hole and factory reset
The Lenovo Gen 2 support manual describes a physical reset hole and model-specific factory-reset button combinations. A factory reset erases controller-stored data, so use it after the attachment, mode, and update checks rather than before them.
Step 4: Update drivers, BIOS, and manufacturer software
Lenovo documents driver and BIOS updates for the Legion Go through Legion Space. Using the path in the Legion Go Gen 2 guide:
- Open Legion Space.
- Confirm the version is 1.0.2.7 or later. Lenovo’s driver-update article for the 8APU1 model says the update feature requires that version.
- Go to Settings > Disks and Drivers > Check for Updates.
- Install the driver and BIOS updates the tool offers, then restart the device.
Step 5: Test the Steam overlay and input configuration
Steam Support states that a configuration can fail when the Steam Overlay is not working or when the game does not support the selected input style. The Steam Support troubleshooting page covers this case. Test in this order:

- In the game, press the controller’s Steam button, or press Shift+Tab on a keyboard, to open the overlay.
- If the overlay does not open, confirm it is enabled in Steam’s settings.
- If the game is a non-Steam or retail title that is not in your Steam library, and especially if it runs through its own launcher, expect the overlay to be unreliable. Steam warns that its overlay may have trouble applying in this case, so a failed overlay test does not by itself point to a controller fault.
- If the overlay works, choose an input configuration suited to the game. Gamepad-only configurations need a game that supports gamepad input.
Community configurations can help, but none is a guaranteed fix. Apply them one at a time and note which change you made.

Xbox’s handheld compatibility catalog assigns each game one of four labels. A label describes that game’s experience on handhelds, not whether your device is faulty.

Some games still need in-game setting adjustments for optimal performance, even when they carry a positive label. Microsoft’s announcement of the program describes what an optimized game should provide, including default controller inputs, correct iconography, intuitive text input, an appropriate full-screen resolution, and legible text. If a game labeled Handheld Optimized still misbehaves on your device, the mismatch is worth reporting to the game’s publisher and to Microsoft, because the label is a stated expectation.
Compare a failing game against a working one
If two games behave differently on the same handheld, compare them on these five points:

What the official guidance does not settle
- This guide draws on documentation from Microsoft, ASUS, Lenovo, Xbox, and Steam, checked in October 2026. It does not reflect hands-on testing of each device, and no single procedure is established to fix every controller or launcher fault.
- Xbox compatibility labels are live and can change after publication.
- If the built-in controls fail in every mode, after every update, and in every game, the handheld may have a hardware fault. In that case, the manufacturer’s support channel is the right route rather than further software changes.
