A DirectDraw initialization or “unsupported” error usually means an older game cannot create the display surface it expects from Windows or your graphics driver. Start with dxdiag to check DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration, then test windowed mode and Windows Compatibility Mode. If the game needs them, enable DirectPlay or .NET Framework 3.5. Only after those checks should you try a DirectDraw wrapper such as dgVoodoo2, install Microsoft’s side-by-side legacy DirectX libraries, update the GPU driver, lower the resolution, or reinstall the game.
The exact message matters. “Error 22: A critical error has occurred while initializing DirectDraw,” for example, is not a single diagnosis: it can be caused by fullscreen handling, an incompatible executable, disabled legacy components, missing runtime files, or a rendering-driver problem.

What does a DirectDraw error mean?
DirectDraw is part of the older DirectX graphics APIs used by many Windows games for 2D surfaces, page flipping, palettes and early 3D acceleration. Modern Windows versions still provide current DirectX components, but they do not reproduce every assumption made by a game written for Windows 95, 98, XP or an early DirectX release.
At launch, the game asks Windows for a display mode and a DirectDraw surface. Failure can occur before the main menu, when changing from a window to fullscreen, or when the game attempts to switch to a legacy resolution. A message that names DirectDraw therefore identifies the failed graphics layer, not necessarily the underlying cause.

There is no published prevalence rate or universal success rate for these remedies. The practical approach is to change one layer at a time, record what changed, and keep every modification reversible.
What should I record before changing anything?
Capture the complete error text and code before trying fixes. Also note the game edition or patch level, Windows edition and build, graphics adapter model, and whether the error appears immediately or only during a fullscreen switch. This information separates a rendering failure from a missing dependency or a game-specific configuration problem.

- Write down whether the game is single-player, multiplayer, or both; DirectPlay is mainly relevant to older multiplayer titles.
- Identify the executable you launch, especially if a launcher starts a separate game file.
- Back up configuration files and the original game directory before adding a wrapper or replacing DLLs.
How do I check DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration with DxDiag?
dxdiag is the first diagnostic because it shows whether Windows can expose the acceleration paths that the game is requesting.
- Press
Win+R, typedxdiag, and press Enter. Approve the prompt if Windows asks whether to check digitally signed drivers. - Open the Display (or Display 1) tab for the adapter used by the game.
- Look for the status of DirectDraw Acceleration and Direct3D Acceleration. They should be enabled.
- Review the driver name, date and version, and any notes in the status area.
- Use Save All Information to create a text report if you need support or want a record before changing drivers.
If either acceleration item is unavailable or disabled, the driver is a priority. Install the current driver supplied through Windows Update or directly by the GPU manufacturer, restart, and run dxdiag again. Do not treat the mere presence of DirectX 12 as proof that every legacy DirectDraw component is functioning.
Will windowed mode fix a DirectDraw initialization error?
Often it is the safest first experiment. A windowed launch avoids the game’s old fullscreen mode-switch code while leaving its files untouched. If the title supports command-line options, add -w to its shortcut target.
- Right-click the game shortcut and choose Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, click in Target.
- Move to the end of the existing command, add a space, then type
-w. Keep the original path inside its quotation marks; the flag goes after the closing quote. - Select Apply, launch the game, and check whether it reaches the menu.
A Microsoft Q&A case involving Diablo II reported that this change allowed windowed play. That is a useful indication, not a guarantee that every game recognizes the same flag. If -w has no effect, remove it and use the game’s own configuration utility or documented launch options.

How do I use Windows Compatibility Mode?
Compatibility Mode changes how Windows presents selected behaviors to a specific executable. It can help when the game expects an earlier Windows version, but it does not install missing DirectX libraries or repair a damaged driver.
- Find the game’s main executable, not only the desktop shortcut.
- Right-click it, choose Properties, and open Compatibility.
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select the earlier Windows version on which the title was designed or last worked.
- Choose Apply, then OK, and test the game.
- If you are unsure which profile fits, run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter from the same tab and test its suggested settings.
Change one compatibility setting at a time. If a profile makes the game less stable, return to the tab and clear the checkbox. Compatibility Mode is reversible and does not alter the game’s rendering libraries.
Does the game need DirectPlay or .NET Framework 3.5?
Some older games depend on optional Windows components that are disabled by default in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Enable them only when the game, installer, or multiplayer setup indicates that they are required; turning them on will not correct every DirectDraw failure.
DirectPlay for older multiplayer titles
- Open Control Panel and select Programs and Features.
- Choose Turn Windows features on or off.
- Expand Legacy Components, check DirectPlay, select OK, and restart if Windows requests it.
DirectPlay concerns legacy networking and matchmaking behavior. It is most relevant to multiplayer games; a single-player title that fails before creating a display surface may not benefit from it.
.NET Framework 3.5 for installers or launchers
If the game or its installer explicitly requests .NET Framework 3.5, enable it through Windows Features or Optional Features. Windows 10 and Windows 11 commonly leave this feature disabled until an application asks for it. After installation, rerun the game or launcher and check whether the original error remains.
When should I install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX runtime?
Use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer when the error identifies a missing legacy library, or when the game’s documentation names one. The package adds optional side-by-side libraries from the older DirectX SDK, including D3DX9 through D3DX11, XAudio 2.7 and XInput 1.3. It does not replace or downgrade the DirectX runtime built into Windows.

That distinction is important: DirectX 12 being present does not automatically provide every older SDK DLL. Install the package from Microsoft, restart if prompted, and test the game again. Avoid downloading individual DLL files from unofficial sites; mixing versions can create a second failure and makes the installation harder to diagnose.
Can dgVoodoo2 translate DirectDraw for modern graphics hardware?
dgVoodoo2 is a compatibility wrapper that implements old graphics APIs for Windows 7 and later and translates DirectX 1–7, including DirectDraw and Direct3D versions through 7, onto Direct3D 11 or 12. It is appropriate when the game’s original API path is incompatible with current Windows but the game itself still runs correctly once a modern rendering path is supplied.
- Make a backup of the original executable directory and any configuration files.
- Obtain the dgVoodoo2 release and identify the wrapper DLLs that match the game’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Follow the game-specific wrapper instructions for placing the files beside the game executable; do not copy files randomly into the Windows system directory.
- Configure the wrapper conservatively, launch the game, and test both the menu and an actual save or level.
- If the result is worse, remove the added wrapper files or restore the backup.
Wrapper behavior is game-specific. It can restore fullscreen or scaling options, but it also changes the rendering layer and may affect overlays, screenshots, timing or multiplayer compatibility. Keep the original files so you can compare a native launch with the wrapped launch.
Which fix should I try first?
The following order minimizes risk and avoids changing several variables at once.

Windowed mode and Compatibility Mode preserve the game’s original files and are therefore preferable before a wrapper. DirectPlay and .NET address dependencies rather than graphics. The legacy DirectX package supplies libraries; it does not emulate an old GPU. dgVoodoo2 is the more substantial rendering intervention and should be tested with a clean backup.
What should I do if the error happens only in fullscreen?
Keep the game windowed first and verify that it can load a level. Then try the game’s own resolution settings, a compatibility profile, or a conservative display mode. A title that works in a window but fails when maximizing is pointing toward a mode-switch or resolution problem rather than a missing networking component.

As a diagnostic, set the game to 640×480 if that option is available and test again. This does not prove that 640×480 is the permanent solution; it simply removes unusual resolution and surface-size variables. If the low-resolution mode works, increase resolution gradually and keep the last stable setting.

Check the graphics driver again
Install the current driver for the actual adapter used by the display, restart Windows, and recheck the Display tab in dxdiag. On systems with integrated and discrete graphics, confirm that the game is not being launched on an unexpected adapter.
Separate a missing-library error from a rendering error
A message naming a specific DLL points toward the legacy DirectX runtime. A generic “initializing DirectDraw” message with disabled acceleration points toward the driver, display mode or wrapper path. Do not install the runtime repeatedly when the diagnostic evidence indicates a mode or driver issue.
Reinstall only after configuration checks
Reinstalling is a last resort because it removes a useful baseline and can overwrite saved settings. Before doing it, copy saves and configuration files, uninstall the game, restart Windows, reinstall from a trusted source, and apply the game’s official patch or modern re-release guidance where available. Test the clean installation before restoring custom wrappers or launch flags.

The installer or launcher says a component is missing
Enable .NET Framework 3.5 when requested. If the message names D3DX, XAudio 2.7 or XInput 1.3, install Microsoft’s legacy DirectX End-User Runtime rather than copying an isolated DLL.
Single-player works but multiplayer does not
Enable DirectPlay under Legacy Components and restart. DirectPlay addresses legacy networking; it will not by itself repair a DirectDraw surface that fails before the game reaches its menu.

- Keep an untouched copy of the executable directory before using dgVoodoo2 or another wrapper.
- Use Windows Features for DirectPlay and .NET rather than third-party installers.
- Prefer the GPU manufacturer’s driver channel or Windows Update.

- For multiplayer, test connectivity after any rendering wrapper is added; a graphics fix can change overlays or timing.
