Most DirectX download problems have one of two causes: Windows itself needs an update, or an older game needs optional legacy DirectX libraries that are not included in the current Windows runtime. Check first with dxdiag. Windows 10 and 11 receive their core DirectX components through Windows Update, so there is no separate DirectX 12 installer. If a game reports a missing file such as d3dx9_35.dll, install Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. If that downloader cannot retrieve its files, use the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) offline package instead.

What should I download to fix DirectX?

Choose the package according to the symptom, not the DirectX number shown in Windows. A message about an outdated Windows component points to Windows Update. A game naming a legacy file such as d3dx9_35.dll, xinput1_3.dll or XAudio2_7.dll points to the optional End-User Runtime libraries.

Situation Use What it does
Windows reports that DirectX is outdated or unavailable Windows Update Updates the DirectX components supplied as part of Windows.
An older game is missing a D3DX, XInput, XAudio, XACT or Managed DirectX file and the PC is online dxwebsetup.exe, DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer Downloads and installs the required legacy side-by-side libraries.
The web installer cannot download files or the installation PC is offline directx_Jun2010_redist.exe, DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) Installs the June 2010 and earlier legacy components from one offline package.

The two End-User Runtime packages do not upgrade the DirectX version reported by Windows. They add older libraries alongside the system runtime so that compatible games can find the files they were built to use.

How do I check which DirectX version is installed?

Use the DirectX Diagnostic Tool before downloading anything. This tells you whether the issue concerns the Windows runtime or a missing side-by-side library.

  1. Open Start and type dxdiag.
  2. Open DirectX Diagnostic Tool from the results.
  3. On the System tab, read the value beside DirectX Version.
  4. If Windows asks whether to check that drivers are digitally signed, accept the check unless you have a specific support reason not to.
  5. For a support request, select Save All Information… and save the text report. It records the system and display details that a game publisher or Microsoft support technician may need.

The version shown here is the Windows core runtime. It does not list every optional legacy DLL installed for older games, so a report such as “DirectX 12” does not prove that D3DX9 or XAudio 2.7 is present.

When should I use Windows Update?

Use Windows Update when the message refers to DirectX 11 or 12 availability, an outdated Windows component, or a system-level graphics feature rather than a named legacy DLL. Microsoft distributes the current core DirectX components for modern Windows through Windows Update; there is no standalone current-runtime package.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update. On some Windows 10 installations the page is under Update & Security > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install every applicable Windows update, including a required restart.
  3. Restart the PC even if Windows does not immediately insist on it.
  4. Launch the game again and note whether the original message has changed.

Installing a legacy End-User Runtime will not turn DirectX 11 into DirectX 12, and it will not replace the Direct3D, DirectInput or DirectSound runtime supplied by Windows. Those system components remain tied to the Windows edition and its update channel.

How do I install the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer?

For an online PC running an older game, use Microsoft’s Download Center entry for the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. The listed file is dxwebsetup.exe, version 9.29.1974.1, published 2024-07-15.

  1. Download dxwebsetup.exe from Microsoft’s Download Center.
  2. Close the affected game and any launcher that may be trying to update it.
  3. Run the downloaded installer. Approve the Windows permission prompt if it appears.
  4. Read the license terms, continue through the wizard and allow it to download the components it identifies as missing.
  5. Let setup finish without deleting or replacing files in the game’s installation folder.
  6. Restart the game. A full Windows restart is also sensible if setup reported that files were in use.

The web installer is a small downloader rather than the complete library archive. Microsoft describes it as installing D3DX, the HLSL Compiler, XInput, XAudio and Managed DirectX 1.1 components used by older software. It installs those libraries side by side, allowing different games to use the versions they require.

What if the web installer says “internal system error”?

An internal system error commonly means the web installer could not retrieve its payload, not that DirectX 12 is missing. Stop retrying the same downloader and switch to the offline redist package described below. A Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting path specifically documents using the offline package when the web installer returns this error.

How do I install DirectX when the web download fails or the PC is offline?

Use the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) package when the target PC has no internet access or the web installer cannot download its files. Microsoft’s Download Center lists directx_Jun2010_redist.exe, version 9.29.1974.1, size 95.6 MB, published 2024-07-15.

  1. On a connected computer, download directx_Jun2010_redist.exe from Microsoft’s Download Center.
  2. Copy the executable to the target PC using a trusted transfer method such as a USB drive or your local network.
  3. Run the executable on the target PC and choose a temporary extraction folder when prompted. The package must unpack its setup files before installation can continue.
  4. Open the extracted folder and run its DirectX setup program.
  5. Follow the license and installation prompts until the package reports completion.
  6. Restart the game and, if necessary, restart Windows.

The redist contains the June 2010 and earlier side-by-side components in one package. It is the practical choice when installation itself cannot maintain an internet connection. It does not alter the DirectX version displayed by dxdiag.

Which legacy DirectX files do older games need?

Older games can depend on a specific library family even when the PC already reports DirectX 12. The exact filename in the error is the most useful clue.

  • D3DX9, D3DX10 or D3DX11: helper libraries used by many games built with older DirectX SDK releases.
  • xinput1_3.dll: an older XInput controller component.
  • XAudio2_7.dll: an older XAudio component used for game sound.
  • XACT: legacy audio authoring and playback components.
  • Managed DirectX 1.1: managed-code libraries used by some older Windows games.

These files are separate from the core Direct3D runtime that Windows reports. Installing a newer graphics driver or looking only at the DirectX version number will not necessarily add them.

What should I do after installing the package?

Test the original game before making additional system changes. Close the launcher completely, reopen it, and start the same title that produced the error.

  1. Record the exact filename or message if the error remains; spelling and the number in a filename matter.
  2. Confirm that you installed the package on the same Windows account and PC where the game runs.
  3. Check the game’s own update channel for a current patch. A game-specific update can be required even after its runtime files are present.
  4. Run dxdiag again and use Save All Information… if you need to contact the publisher or Microsoft support.
  5. Include the game version, Windows edition, exact error text and DxDiag report in the support request. Do not send only a screenshot that cuts off the filename.

If the game now reports a different missing DLL, that usually identifies another legacy component rather than proving that the first installation failed. Use the new filename to decide whether the same End-User Runtime package covers it.

Is downloading DirectX from a third-party DLL site safe?

Avoid random DLL download sites and manual DLL replacements. They can provide a mismatched build, bundle unwanted software or leave the game with an incomplete set of dependencies. Use Windows Update for the Windows runtime and the two Microsoft End-User Runtime packages for legacy libraries.

Do not copy a DLL from another PC into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64 or the game’s folder as a first-line fix. The installer registers and places the supported components together; a manually copied file can create a new version conflict and makes later troubleshooting harder.

Why does DirectX 12 not include the DLL my game requests?

DirectX is a collection of APIs and supporting libraries that have evolved over many Windows releases. Newer Windows versions keep the core runtime current, but Microsoft does not add every historical helper library to each new installation. Games compiled against a particular SDK can therefore request a legacy side-by-side file even on a fully updated system.

The End-User Runtime is designed for that compatibility gap. It supplements Windows rather than replacing it, which is why the DirectX number in dxdiag can stay unchanged after a successful installation.

How do the three legitimate repair paths compare?

Path Internet needed during setup Legacy-library coverage Changes the Windows-reported DirectX version? Best match
Windows Update Usually yes, unless updates are staged by an administrator Current Windows components No separate version upgrade beyond the Windows update itself System-level DirectX availability or an outdated Windows component
dxwebsetup.exe Yes D3DX, HLSL Compiler, XInput, XAudio and Managed DirectX 1.1 components selected by setup No An online PC with an older game missing a legacy file
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe No, after the 95.6 MB package has been transferred June 2010 and earlier side-by-side components No An offline PC or a web-installer download failure

The package version shown for both Microsoft downloads is 9.29.1974.1, with a listed publication date of 2024-07-15. The redist is larger because it carries the installation files instead of downloading them as needed.

What common mistakes make a DirectX repair fail?

Installing a “DirectX 12 download” from an unofficial page

There is no separate DirectX 12 installer for current Windows editions. Unofficial packages may be mislabeled or unsafe. Start with Windows Update and identify the actual missing component.

Reading the DxDiag number as a list of every DLL

The System tab reports the core Windows runtime, not every optional compatibility library. A DirectX 12 result does not answer a request for d3dx9_35.dll.

Retrying a failed web installer indefinitely

If the downloader cannot reach its files or reports an internal system error, use the June 2010 redist. Repeating the same network-dependent setup does not add the offline files it lacks.

Deleting existing DirectX files

Do not remove system DLLs or attempt to “downgrade” DirectX. The legacy package is intended to coexist with the Windows runtime.

Ignoring the exact game and error version

Keep the game patched and record its version. A publisher may require a particular build, redistributable or configuration in addition to the Microsoft runtime.

Can Windows 10 or 11 users install the June 2010 package?

Yes. The June 2010 redist is specifically for older side-by-side components and can coexist with the current DirectX runtime in Windows 10 and 11. Installing it does not roll back the operating system’s DirectX version.

On Windows 7 or 8, the same distinction still matters: use Windows Update for the components supplied by that operating system, and use the End-User Runtime when an older game requests one of its optional libraries. The exact updates available depend on the Windows edition and its support status.

When should I contact the game publisher?

Contact the publisher after Windows Update and the appropriate Microsoft package have completed, especially if the error names a file outside the legacy families listed above or if the game crashes without a missing-file message. Provide the exact text, game build, Windows version and DxDiag report. That evidence helps distinguish a runtime dependency from a game-specific patch, permissions issue or graphics configuration problem.

If support asks for DxDiag, use the saved report rather than editing it. Preserve the original filename and timestamp so the support team can tell which run produced the information.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review vulnerabilities and log application crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software, does not replace it, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install both the web installer and the June 2010 redist?

Usually choose one route: the web installer for an online PC, or the redist when the downloader fails or the PC is offline. Installing the full package after a successful web installation is generally unnecessary unless a game’s support instructions specifically require it.

Will the DirectX End-User Runtime improve my graphics performance?

It is a compatibility package, not a graphics-performance upgrade. It supplies older libraries that a game may require; frame rate and visual features still depend on the game’s engine, Windows configuration and graphics hardware.

Where can I find the missing DLL after installation?

You normally should not hunt for or copy the file yourself. The Microsoft installer places the supported runtime components in the locations expected by Windows and compatible games; use the exact error filename and a DxDiag report if the game still cannot find it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does reinstalling DirectX remove my games or saves?

The End-User Runtime packages install shared components and do not target game save folders. As with any system setup, close games and launchers first, and keep a normal backup of important saves before troubleshooting.
