If Windows 10 version 1709 leaves you with “Display driver stopped responding and has recovered,” a black screen, flicker, or VIDEO_TDR_TIMEOUT_DETECTED, treat it first as a display-driver change rather than a failed graphics card. Reset the driver with Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B, test whether Task Manager flickers too, and roll back the driver if Windows Update recently changed it. If rollback is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the correct package; use Safe Mode when normal startup is unusable. - Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Choose a reason when Windows asks, confirm the rollback, and restart the computer.
Test the same game, video workload, or desktop action that caused the failure. If the screen remains stable, keep the rolled-back package while you identify a newer driver that is explicitly matched to your computer and adapter. Do not assume that every 1709 installation received the same driver; Windows Update, the computer manufacturer, and the graphics-adapter manufacturer can publish different packages.

The Roll Back Driver button can be unavailable when Windows has no retained earlier package, when the device was newly installed, or after previous cleanup removed the older files. In that case, use the replacement procedure rather than repeatedly forcing the rollback command.
What if Roll Back Driver is unavailable?
Uninstall the display device, restart, and allow Windows to install a driver again. This replaces the active package instead of reversing to a stored copy.
- In Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal. If Windows offers a checkbox to delete the driver software, select it only when you intend to remove that package completely; note the adapter name first so you can obtain the correct replacement.

A generic driver can restore basic output while omitting manufacturer-specific functions. Microsoft notes that Windows Update may provide coverage without OEM customizations such as brightness controls. On a branded laptop or desktop, the manufacturer package is therefore the safer recovery choice even if a newer reference package exists elsewhere.

How do I start Safe Mode when normal Windows startup is unusable?
Safe Mode loads a minimal driver set, making it useful for black screens, repeated TDR resets, and a desktop that crashes before Device Manager can be used normally.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- After the blue recovery screen appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings.
- Select Restart, then choose the Safe Mode option from the numbered list. Use Safe Mode with Networking only if you need network access to obtain a driver.
- In Safe Mode, use Device Manager to roll back or uninstall the display adapter, then restart normally.
If Settings cannot be opened, interrupt startup until Windows enters its recovery environment, or use the recovery options already available on the device. Safe Mode is an isolation step: it does not prove the graphics hardware is defective, and its low-resolution appearance is expected.
When should I perform a clean installation with Display Driver Uninstaller?
Use DDU only when ordinary rollback or uninstall-and-reinstall attempts fail, or when the installer repeatedly rolls back. Intel identifies leftover installation files as a cause of repeated rollback and recommends removing those remnants before installing the current Intel package.

- Download the current driver intended for the exact adapter and Windows edition from the computer maker or adapter vendor before removing the working network connection.
- Disconnect from the internet temporarily so Windows Update does not immediately inject another package while you clean the old one.
- Enter Safe Mode using the recovery path above.
- Run Display Driver Uninstaller and choose the display-driver cleanup action. DDU is software; it is not a physical repair product and cannot correct a damaged GPU, monitor, cable, or power supply.
- Restart when DDU completes, install the prepared vendor package, and restart again.
- Reconnect the network and check Device Manager and Windows Update after the system has remained stable.
Do not make DDU the first response to a single flicker. It adds another variable and can leave the system with only a basic display driver if the replacement package is wrong or unavailable.
Should I use an OEM driver or a generic graphics driver?
Choose the package according to the machine you are repairing. OEM packages are tuned for the exact laptop or desktop and can preserve platform controls; generic packages may contain newer reference features but can omit those customizations.

How do Windows Update, servicing-stack updates, and cumulative updates fit into the repair?
A driver rollback can stop the immediate crash while an incomplete or unhealthy update installation continues to cause instability. Repair the update foundation after the display is usable.
