If DMZ Early Access is missing, locked, refusing to launch, or stuck at sign-in, identify the failure stage before reinstalling anything. A qualifying digital Modern Warfare 4 preorder is required for Early Access, which begins October 20, 2026; the general release is October 23, 2026. Once entitlement is confirmed, install the correct platform package, repair cached or corrupted files, check service status, and only then test router settings.
Start with the entitlement check
The most common reason a DMZ Early Access tile is absent or locked is that the account does not have the required entitlement. Early Access is tied to a qualifying digital Modern Warfare 4 preorder. The preorder and the attempted launch must use the same platform family: a purchase on one console ecosystem or PC storefront does not automatically grant access on another.

Activision lists October 20, 2026 as the start of DMZ Early Access. Xbox Wire gives October 23, 2026 as the broad launch date for everyone else. The published information does not specify a universal release-hour or time-zone conversion, so a title that remains locked near the date boundary may simply be waiting for the platform or service to update.

- Open the platform account that made the purchase and confirm the order is a digital Modern Warfare 4 preorder.
- Check that the signed-in console or PC account belongs to the same platform family as the preorder.
- Use the account intended to receive the preorder entitlement; an unrelated Activision account may not show the mode.
- Check whether the calendar date is October 20, 2026 or later for Early Access, or October 23, 2026 or later for the standard launch.
If the purchase is not eligible or the date is before the applicable launch, repeated downloads and reinstalls cannot unlock DMZ. Wait for the normal launch or resolve the account and order discrepancy with the store that processed the purchase.

Install the correct DMZ content
Call of Duty installations can be split into a base application and optional mode packs. A game can therefore appear installed while the specific DMZ content is absent. Use the launcher’s file-management screen after installing the main title and select the DMZ or required mode pack when it is offered. Keep free storage for both the initial package and subsequent updates; official support pages do not publish one stable DMZ-only size for every platform and build, so the current requirement shown by your launcher is the value to follow.

When the mode is missing from the library
Refresh the library after signing out and back in to the platform account that made the preorder. On a console, fully restart the system rather than leaving it in standby. On PC, exit the storefront and its background processes, then relaunch it. If the title is listed but DMZ is not, open the in-game Manage Files screen; optional content may not be selected by default.
Repair files before reinstalling
Activision warns that corrupted temporary data can cause connectivity errors, freezes, and slow or unsuccessful loads. File repair is less disruptive than a full reinstall and should be attempted after entitlement and package selection are confirmed.
PS5 cache repair
- Power the PS5 off completely; do not use Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the console’s power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Choose the Safe Mode option that clears the system cache, then allow the console to restart.
- Launch Call of Duty and check whether the DMZ package and sign-in screen load normally.
Clearing the cache removes temporary system data, not your purchased entitlement. If the title still requests content, return to Manage Files and verify the optional pack is installed.

Steam file verification
- Open Steam and select the Call of Duty title in Library.
- Open the game’s properties and choose the installed-files option.
- Run Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game again.
Activision notes that a small number of local configuration files can fail verification normally. Do not treat every configuration-file message as proof that the entire installation is damaged; allow Steam to replace files it identifies as missing or corrupt, then test the game.
Battle.net cache and location repair
- Exit the Call of Duty game and close the Battle.net application.
- Use Task Manager to confirm that Blizzard and game processes have ended.
- Delete the Battle.net cache and temporary files using the documented Battle.net cache-cleanup procedure.
- Relaunch Battle.net and let it update.
- If the button says Install even though the game folder is present, choose Locate this game and point the launcher to the existing installation.
Locating the existing folder avoids an unnecessary second download. If Battle.net cannot validate the folder after locating it, run its repair option and restart the launcher before considering a reinstall.
Microsoft Store or Xbox app verification
- Open the Microsoft Store or Xbox app and find the installed game.
- Select the game’s ellipsis menu.
- Choose Manage, open Files, and select Verify and Repair.
- Wait for the check and then restart the app before launching DMZ.
Power-cycle after repair
After any cache or file operation, fully exit the launcher or shut down the console, wait briefly, and start it again. This ensures that an update, file lock, or stale process is not preserving the original failure.
Fix launch failures and repeated content prompts
A launch failure is different from a missing entitlement. If the mode was available previously or the launcher shows the correct package, use this order:

- Confirm the platform account is signed in and the title is installed on the intended storage device.
- Check for a pending game, system, or storefront update.
- Fully exit the game and launcher, then restart the platform.
- Clear the PS5 cache, verify Steam files, repair Battle.net files, or use Microsoft Store/Xbox app Verify and Repair as appropriate.
- Open Manage Files and make sure the DMZ-related optional pack is selected.
- Launch again before changing router settings.
If the game repeatedly asks for the same content, note whether the prompt appears before or after the launcher’s file-management screen. A prompt before the screen usually indicates an incomplete package or failed update; a prompt after it can indicate a damaged local installation. Re-run the platform repair process and check available storage before downloading again.
Separate account and service problems from network problems
A screen that says logging in, connecting, or matchmaking can be caused by an outage, an account mismatch, or a local connection. Check the external conditions first so that you do not change router settings during a service interruption.
Check service status
- Check Activision Online Services.
- Check the status page for the platform in use: PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam, or Battle.net.
- If either service reports an incident or maintenance, wait for recovery before changing files or router configuration.
A service that is operational does not prove that your account or home network is healthy, but an active outage makes local troubleshooting inconclusive.

- Verify that the console or PC storefront account is signed in.
- Confirm that the Activision account linked to the platform is the one intended for the preorder.
- Do not switch among Activision accounts while troubleshooting; record which account owns the entitlement and keep that account linked.
Use a wired connection for network diagnosis
Activision says, “We strongly recommend using a wired Ethernet connection during online gameplay.” Wi-Fi reliability and available bandwidth can vary with distance, interference, and other household traffic, so Ethernet is the clearest way to remove wireless variables. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is suitable for this test.

- Connect the console or PC directly to the router with Ethernet.
- Pause streaming, cloud synchronization, large downloads, and other bandwidth-heavy activity.
- Restart the router, wait until it has reconnected to the internet, and restart the platform.
- Launch DMZ and test sign-in and matchmaking before changing any advanced router option.
If the wired test works while Wi-Fi does not, the DMZ installation and account are less likely to be the cause. Improve wireless placement or use Ethernet for play rather than immediately forwarding ports.

Advanced router changes are reversible, but they can affect every device on the home network. Make one change at a time, record the original setting, and test after each change.
UPnP test
Universal Plug and Play can let the console request the ports it needs. If the service is available and the wired connection still hangs at sign-in or matchmaking, enable UPnP in the router’s administration interface and restart the router and platform. Test DMZ again.
Port forwarding with a static console IP
- Reserve or assign a static local IP address for the console in the router.
- Use Activision’s current platform-specific port-forwarding instructions for the relevant console or service.
- Save the rules, restart the router and console, and test one session.
- If the result does not improve, remove the rules and restore the previous configuration.
Port numbers and menus vary by router and platform. Do not copy a rule intended for a different platform family or a different service.

Temporary DMZ test
Activision documents placing a console in the router’s DMZ as a later diagnostic option. Use it only long enough to test whether router filtering is involved, with a static console IP and the router’s security implications understood. After the test, remove the console from the DMZ and return the router to its normal configuration. Leaving a console exposed in the DMZ is not a permanent fix.
Managed or shared networks
School, corporate, apartment, hotel, and other shared networks may block router access or required traffic. Contact the network administrator or internet service provider rather than attempting changes you do not control. A local router reset can disrupt other users and still cannot bypass an upstream restriction.
Choose the remedy by failure stage

When a reinstall is justified
Reinstall only after confirming entitlement, selecting the correct package, checking service status, and completing the platform’s cache or file-repair procedure. A reinstall cannot correct a missing preorder entitlement, an outage, or a blocked shared network. Before starting, note the launcher’s current required storage and ensure enough free space for the complete package and updates. On PC, preserve any settings or captures you need, then remove the title through the storefront’s normal uninstall command and install it again from the same account.

A short recovery sequence
- Check whether the account owns a qualifying digital Modern Warfare 4 preorder and whether the date is on or after October 20, 2026.
- Confirm the correct title and DMZ pack are installed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Battle.net, or Microsoft Store/Xbox app.
- Restart the platform and launcher.
- Clear the PS5 cache, verify Steam files, clean and locate Battle.net files, or run Verify and Repair in the Microsoft Store/Xbox app.
- Check Activision Online Services and the relevant platform status page.
- Confirm the linked Activision account, restart the router, pause competing traffic, and test with wired Ethernet.
- Try UPnP, then carefully test port forwarding if the service is operating and the problem remains.
- Use a temporary console DMZ test only as a final router diagnostic, then remove the console from the DMZ.
- Reinstall only when the entitlement and package are correct and repair has failed.
This order keeps low-risk checks ahead of disruptive downloads and router changes, while distinguishing an expected pre-launch lock from a damaged installation or a genuine connection failure.
