If a Windows download failed with 0x800070422, first check the original dialog carefully: Microsoft’s documented Windows upgrade and installation code is 0x80070422, with one fewer zero. Microsoft describes 0x80070422 as a disabled-service condition. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, the practical first fix is to run the Windows Update troubleshooter, enable and start the Windows Update service, then retry. If that does not work, reset the update cache, repair Windows with DISM and SFC, and investigate firewall, proxy, or timeout interference.
The screen that displayed the message matters. The available Microsoft guidance documents Windows Update and upgrade/install failures, but it does not establish that the longer 0x800070422 string is a valid Windows code or that a particular Microsoft Store download produced it. Record the exact code and app or settings page before changing anything.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What does error 0x80070422 mean?
0x80070422 means Windows cannot start a service required for the operation because that service is disabled. Microsoft Support summarizes the condition as: “The service cannot be started because it is disabled.” In a download or upgrade workflow, the disabled service can prevent Windows from checking, obtaining, or installing the required files even when your internet connection appears normal.
The title’s 0x800070422 has an additional zero. Treat it as a likely transcription or reading error until you verify the original message. Windows error codes are exact identifiers; applying a repair for 0x80070422 to a different code can waste time or change services unnecessarily.

Which Windows versions does this guidance cover?
Microsoft’s documented mitigation applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Menus differ slightly between releases, so use the equivalent label shown on your computer. If the exact code, wording, or screen is different, look up that exact identifier in Microsoft’s support documentation instead of assuming it has the same cause.
How do I verify the code and the affected downloader?
Before repairing anything, establish what actually failed. This prevents a Windows Update repair from being applied to an unrelated application download.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Reopen the error dialog, notification history, or screenshot and copy the code character by character. Check the number of zeros and whether the first character is a zero, not the letter O.
- Write down where it appeared: Windows Update in Settings, an upgrade assistant, an installation screen, or another downloader. The available documentation does not prove that Microsoft Store displays this particular code, so do not assume a Store-specific cause without the app name.
- Note whether Windows had just restarted, whether an update was already in progress, and whether the failure occurs repeatedly. These observations help distinguish a one-time interrupted download from a disabled service or damaged update components.
- If the verified code is not
0x80070422, use Microsoft’s guidance for that exact code. Do not silently replace a different identifier with the one discussed here.
How do I run the Windows Update troubleshooter?
Run the built-in troubleshooter before using command-line repairs. It checks common Windows Update conditions and can attempt routine fixes with less risk than manually renaming system folders.
Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Update troubleshooter and follow the automated support workflow.
- Allow the checks to complete and apply any recommended action. If Get Help asks you to restart, do so before trying the download again.
Microsoft directs Windows 11 users to this automated Get Help workflow. It is intended to diagnose and attempt common fixes, not to replace the deeper repairs below when component corruption or network filtering is involved.
Older Windows versions
On supported older Windows releases, open Settings and find the Windows Update troubleshooter under the troubleshooting section. The exact navigation labels vary by release. Finish the diagnostic, restart if requested, and retry the same download so you can tell whether the result changed.

How do I enable and start the Windows Update service?
For the documented 0x80070422 condition, this is the central manual fix. You need an account permitted to change Windows services.
- Press
Windows+R, typeservices.msc, and pressEnter. - In the Services list, locate Windows Update. Select it to view its current status and startup setting.
- If the service is disabled, open its properties and choose an enabled startup mode. Do not leave it disabled.
- If its status is Stopped, select Start. If it is already running, leave it running and continue with the other checks rather than repeatedly stopping it.
- Select Apply and OK, close the Services window, and restart Windows.
- After the restart, return to the same downloader and retry. A successful service start does not retroactively complete a failed download; the operation must be attempted again.
Microsoft’s mitigation for this code is to ensure Windows Update is enabled, start it manually, and reset Windows Update components when necessary. If a setting immediately returns to Disabled or the service refuses to start, record the exact message and move to the cache and component checks rather than repeatedly forcing it.
How do I clear a corrupted Windows Update cache?
Windows can fail when files already downloaded into the update cache are corrupt or incomplete. Clearing or renaming the cache makes Windows obtain fresh copies. This procedure targets update data, not the original error text, so verify the code first.
Graphical method
- Open
services.mscagain and select Windows Update. - Choose Stop and wait until the status changes to stopped. Windows may keep files open while the service is running.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder. If Windows reports that a file is in use, confirm that Windows Update has stopped; do not force-delete unrelated files elsewhere.
- Return to Services, start Windows Update, restart the computer, and retry the download.
Deleting the contents removes cached update packages, so Windows may need to download them again. It does not itself repair a damaged Windows component; use DISM and SFC if the failure persists.
Command-line reset supplied by Microsoft
Microsoft also provides a reset that renames the update and catalog folders instead of deleting their contents. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands one at a time, waiting for each to finish:

- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Enter each command exactly as shown. The first two stop Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Windows Update so their files can be renamed.
- The two
rencommands create backup names for the existing cache and catalog folders. Do not substitute a different path. - The final commands start both services again.
- Restart Windows after the commands complete, then retry the download.
These advanced procedures require administrator permissions and comfort with the command line. If a stop command says the service is not running, continue to the next command; if a rename fails because a file is in use, restart Windows and repeat the sequence before moving on.
How do I repair Windows with DISM and SFC?
If the service is enabled and a fresh cache does not help, Windows component or protected-file corruption may be preventing the download process from working. Microsoft’s repair order is DISM first, followed by System File Checker.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand let it complete. Do not close the window merely because progress appears to pause. - When DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. - Allow SFC to reach 100 percent, then restart the computer.
- Try Windows Update again and note whether the same code returns.
DISM repairs the Windows image that supplies system components; SFC checks protected operating-system files against that repaired component store. These commands can correct corruption, but they cannot confirm that the original code was typed correctly and they will not unblock a firewall or proxy.
Could a firewall, proxy, or timeout be blocking the download?
When Windows Update is running and its cache has been reset, investigate the network path. Microsoft Learn documents download failures caused by invalid data, firewalls, proxies, and timeouts.
- Check whether a firewall or network security policy is blocking Microsoft download URLs. On a managed work or school connection, the administrator may control these rules.
- Review proxy settings and remove an obsolete or unreachable proxy configuration if you installed one deliberately and know it is no longer needed.
- Retry on a stable connection. A timeout during a large transfer can leave invalid or incomplete data that produces another failure on the next attempt.
- If possible, compare the result on a different trusted network. A different result points toward network filtering rather than a local service setting.
Do not disable security controls permanently just to test a download. Instead, identify the blocked Microsoft endpoint or proxy rule and follow the network administrator’s approved process for allowing it.

Which repair should I try first?
The sequence below orders the options from least invasive to most disruptive. Start at the top and move down only when the earlier check does not resolve the verified error.
| Method | Access required | Most likely target | Relative data risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check and start Windows Update | Services graphical interface | Disabled or stopped service | Low |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Get Help on Windows 11 or Settings on older releases | Common configuration problems | Low |
| Clear or rename the update cache | Administrator account for advanced reset | Corrupt or incomplete downloaded files | Lower than a clean installation; update files are downloaded again |
| DISM followed by SFC | Administrator Command Prompt | Damaged Windows image or protected files | System repair; let both commands finish |
| Software-download or clean-installation tools | Installation media and administrator access | Persistent component corruption | Highest; back up personal files before a clean installation |
A clean installation is an escalation path, not the first response to a service-disabled code. Microsoft points to its software-download and clean-installation tools when component corruption remains after normal repairs. Plan for installation media and a backup of personal files before choosing that route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes after Windows 10 support ended?
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. If the affected computer still runs Windows 10, check whether it meets current Windows 11 requirements and consider the supported upgrade path before treating every later download failure as a temporary cache problem.
This date does not change the meaning of a verified 0x80070422 message, and it does not make the longer 0x800070422 string official. Keep the exact code and Windows version with any support request so the responder can distinguish a disabled service from an unsupported operating-system situation.
As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, and can clean temporary and cache files. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a download error mention a service instead of the file?
Windows Update uses background services to discover, transfer, and install update data. If the required service is disabled, the visible failure can be reported at the download stage even though the underlying block occurred before or during service startup.

Will deleting the SoftwareDistribution contents delete my personal documents?
The procedure addresses the cache folder at C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, not your Documents, Pictures, or other user-library folders. It does remove cached update packages, so Windows must retrieve those packages again on the next attempt.
What if the same message appears in a non-Windows-Update application?
Record the application name and its complete error text before using Windows Update resets. Because the available Microsoft documentation does not establish which downloader produced the message, the application’s own support instructions may be more appropriate than changing Windows Update components.
Can I close the administrator Command Prompt while DISM or SFC is running?
No. Let the active command finish and return to the prompt before closing the window or restarting. Interrupting a repair leaves its result uncertain, so repeat the command from an elevated prompt if it was interrupted.
