DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is Windows bug check 0x000000D1. It means a kernel-mode driver tried to access invalid or pageable memory while operating at an interrupt request level (IRQL) too high for that access. The practical fix is to identify the driver or hardware change involved, then update, roll back, disable, or remove it; test memory and firmware; and use a crash dump when the cause remains unclear. If Windows will not start normally, use Windows Recovery Environment and Safe Mode before changing drivers. Do not delete a Microsoft .sys file simply because it appears on the blue screen or in a dump.

What does DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL mean?

Windows stops with this message when a kernel driver uses an improper memory address at an IRQL where that memory cannot safely be accessed. Microsoft describes the usual cause as drivers that have used improper memory addresses. The code is 0x000000D1; the failure is in kernel-mode code, so an ordinary desktop application is usually only the trigger or the program that happened to be active when the driver failed.

A blue screen may show a filename ending in .sys. Treat that filename as a lead, not a verdict. A Microsoft component such as ntoskrnl.exe or ndis.sys can be where corrupted data becomes visible even when a third-party network, graphics, storage, USB, VPN, antivirus, or virtualization driver caused the corruption. The call stack, crash-dump context, and changes made immediately before the crashes are more reliable than the displayed name alone.

What should I record before changing anything?

Capture evidence while the error is still reproducible. Photograph the complete stop screen, including the hexadecimal code and any named .sys file. Write down whether the crash followed a Windows update, a graphics or network-driver update, a new USB device, VPN or antivirus installation, virtual-machine software, a RAM change, or a BIOS update. Also note what the PC was doing: gaming, waking from sleep, connecting to Wi-Fi, copying files, or starting a particular program.

Which fix should I try first?

Start with reversible actions and move toward more invasive recovery only if the crash persists. The table shows how the common remedies differ.

Action Best use Will Windows need to boot normally? Reversible? Diagnostic value
Install Windows and manufacturer drivers A recent update, missing fix, or known device issue Usually yes Sometimes Moderate
Roll back a driver The crashes began immediately after an update Usually yes; Safe Mode if necessary Yes, through Device Manager High for a recent change
Disable or disconnect a device Isolating a suspected adapter or peripheral Yes, or Safe Mode Yes High
Windows Memory Diagnostic Possible RAM or memory-subsystem fault Restart required Yes Moderate; intermittent faults can escape
Crash-dump analysis in WinDbg Repeated crashes with no clear recent change Normal boot is not required to inspect an existing dump Yes High when a useful stack is present
Targeted Driver Verifier Testing a small group of suspicious third-party drivers Normal boot is preferred; Safe Mode can undo it Yes, with reset High, but it can create additional crashes
Recovery or clean installation Persistent corruption after diagnostics and backups No; installation media may be needed Not without a backup Low for identifying the original cause

How do I update Windows and the correct device driver?

  1. Open Settings → Windows Update and install available updates. Check Advanced options → Optional updates for driver updates, then restart.
  2. Open Device Manager and locate the device suggested by your evidence. High-value suspects are network and Wi-Fi adapters, graphics cards, storage controllers, chipsets, USB controllers and recently changed devices.
  3. Right-click the device, choose Properties → Driver, and note the provider, date and version. Compare it with the support page for your exact PC model or component.
  4. Prefer the computer or component manufacturer’s package when Windows Update does not resolve the issue. Download the package for the correct Windows edition and architecture, install it, and restart.

Do not install a random package that merely has a similar filename. A driver that is newer but intended for a different model can be as unstable as an old one. If the system becomes stable after one update, keep the rest of the configuration unchanged long enough to confirm the result.

How do I roll back or isolate a driver?

Roll back a recent update

In Device Manager, open the suspected device’s Properties → Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when Windows makes that option available. Choose a reason, confirm, restart, and test the activity that previously triggered the blue screen. The button may be unavailable when no previous package is stored.

Temporarily disable a device

Use Device Manager → right-click the device → Disable device. This is a test, not a permanent repair: Wi-Fi, sound, graphics acceleration, or a storage path may stop working while the device is disabled. If the crashes stop, obtain a corrected package from the device maker or remove the related utility, then re-enable the device and retest.

Disconnect new hardware

Shut down, unplug a newly installed USB device or adapter, and boot again. Test with only essential peripherals attached. A stable system after removal points toward the device, its driver, its firmware, or a USB controller interaction; it does not prove which layer is at fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Windows will not boot after the error?

Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) rather than repeatedly forcing normal startup.

  1. From the recovery screen choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
  2. At the numbered list, choose Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with Networking only when you genuinely need network access).
  3. In Safe Mode, roll back or uninstall the recently changed driver in Device Manager. Remove the associated third-party utility if the stop screen identifies one.
  4. Restart normally and test. If the loop began after enabling Driver Verifier, open an elevated Command Prompt in Safe Mode and run verifier /reset, then restart.

Safe Mode loads a limited driver set, so a crash that disappears there strongly suggests a driver or service that is not loaded in that mode. It does not, by itself, identify the exact file.

Can Windows Memory Diagnostic tell me whether RAM is bad?

It can find some memory errors, but a clean pass does not rule out every intermittent hardware fault. Press Win, type mdsched, open Windows Memory Diagnostic, choose Restart now and check for problems, and let the test complete.

After Windows starts, review the result in Event Viewer → Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → MemoryDiagnostics-Results → Debug. If errors are reported, shut down and test the modules and slots according to the PC or motherboard maker’s procedure; do not continue relying on a system that is corrupting memory. If no errors are reported but crashes continue, proceed with driver isolation and dump analysis rather than treating the test as proof that hardware is healthy.

Should I update BIOS or other firmware?

Firmware can affect memory compatibility, power transitions, storage controllers, USB devices and graphics initialization. Check the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model, read its release notes, and follow its power and recovery requirements. Do not interrupt a firmware update.

Run the manufacturer’s built-in hardware diagnostics if available. In Event Viewer, look for errors at the same time as the blue screen. Disconnect newly installed peripherals and retest before changing several firmware settings; this keeps the cause easier to isolate.

How do I analyze a crash dump?

A dump is the best next step when updates, rollback and hardware checks do not identify the cause. Configure Windows to create a Small memory dump, Kernel memory dump, or Automatic memory dump in System Properties → Advanced → Startup and Recovery → Settings. Keep the dump generated by the next crash.

Inspect it in WinDbg

  1. Open the dump in WinDbg.
  2. Run !analyze -v.
  3. Review the bug-check parameters, the stack, the module or image name, and the driver identified by KiBugCheckDriver when that field is available.
  4. Compare the suspected module with your change timeline and the driver’s provider and version in Device Manager.

One stack can be misleading when memory was already corrupted. Look for the same third-party module across multiple dumps, a consistent call path, or a repeatable trigger. A Microsoft module on the stack is not a reason to replace that file; repair or update the underlying vendor driver instead.

How should I use Driver Verifier without making the PC worse?

Driver Verifier deliberately stresses drivers so an offending third-party or unsigned driver is more likely to be caught. It can severely slow or destabilize Windows when configured broadly, so verify only a small, evidence-based group.

  1. Open an elevated Command Prompt and start verifier.
  2. Choose the standard settings, select drivers by name, and select only the suspicious third-party or unsigned drivers. Do not select every driver.
  3. Restart and reproduce the normal activity that triggers the crash.
  4. When testing is complete, open an elevated Command Prompt and run verifier /reset, then restart.

If Windows enters a crash loop, return to WinRE, choose Safe Mode, run verifier /reset, and remove or roll back the driver implicated by the resulting dump. Verifier narrows the suspect list; it does not make every flagged module the original cause automatically.

When is reinstalling Windows appropriate?

Use recovery options only after backing up personal files and preserving any useful dumps. A reinstall can remove persistent software or driver corruption, but it is a poor first diagnostic because it destroys evidence and may not fix defective RAM, firmware, or hardware.

If you need installation media, Microsoft’s documented requirement is a blank USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. Creating the media erases the drive. Disconnect nonessential storage, confirm your backup, and follow the edition and activation guidance for the PC. After installation, apply Windows updates and the manufacturer’s chipset, network, graphics and storage drivers before reinstalling optional utilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I avoid when fixing 0xD1?

  • Do not delete or replace ntoskrnl.exe, ndis.sys, or another Microsoft module solely because it appears in a dump.
  • Do not enable Driver Verifier for every driver at once.
  • Do not install driver packages from unofficial download sites when the device maker provides one.
  • Do not change BIOS settings, drivers and memory modules simultaneously; you will lose the ability to identify the change that mattered.
  • Do not assume that a successful memory test proves every hardware component is sound.

As an optional shortcut after the Windows Update and manufacturer checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a 2-day free trial without a credit card before subscription; results vary, and manual diagnosis is still needed for hardware faults or crashes that a driver update does not address.

How do I know the problem is actually resolved?

Use the same workload that previously triggered the stop, such as launching a game, connecting to Wi-Fi, waking from sleep, or transferring files. Check that no new dump is created, review Event Viewer for coincident hardware errors, and keep the rollback or replacement driver documented. If the crash returns with a different filename, preserve the new dump rather than assuming it is unrelated; the first failure may have exposed broader memory or hardware corruption.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to delete the .sys file shown on the blue screen?

No. A driver file may be required for Windows to start, and the displayed module can be a victim of memory corruption. Identify its provider and role, then update, roll back, disable, or uninstall the associated device or software through supported Windows or vendor procedures.

Why does the filename change on every blue screen?

Different kernel drivers can touch the same corrupted memory, so the point of failure may vary between crashes. Compare dumps, recent changes and the triggering activity instead of treating each filename as a separate problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a graphics or network driver cause this while I am gaming?

Yes. Graphics, network, storage, chipset, USB, VPN, antivirus and virtualization software all add kernel-level components that can be involved. Update or roll back the component that matches the timing, then test with newly added peripherals and utilities removed.

What if the computer crashes before I can read the stop screen?

Use WinRE and Safe Mode to remove the latest driver change, then configure automatic or small dumps so the next failure is recorded. WinDbg’s stack and KiBugCheckDriver field can provide clues even when the screen disappears quickly.

Will reinstalling Windows guarantee a fix?

No. Reinstallation can clear software corruption, but it cannot repair defective RAM, incompatible firmware, a failing device, or a driver that is reinstalled immediately afterward. Back up first and use diagnostics to avoid erasing the evidence needed to find the underlying cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a BIOS update itself trigger DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL?

It can change hardware initialization or compatibility, so record the BIOS change in your timeline and use the manufacturer’s recovery or rollback guidance if crashes began immediately afterward. Do not interrupt or improvise a firmware recovery procedure.

Where should I keep crash dumps for later support?

Copy each dump to another drive before uninstalling drivers, resetting Windows or running cleanup utilities. Keep the stop-screen photograph and the driver version that was installed at the time with the dump so the sequence can be reconstructed.

Is Safe Mode proof that a driver is defective?

No. Safe Mode loads fewer drivers and services, which only shows that one of the omitted components may be involved. Reproduce the issue after a controlled rollback or update and confirm with repeated dumps or device isolation.

Should I test one RAM stick at a time?

If Windows Memory Diagnostic reports errors, follow the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s module and slot-testing instructions. The correct sequence differs by platform, and changing modules without documenting the slot can obscure an intermittent fault.
