DXGI device errors are a family of Windows graphics failures, not one diagnosis. The first step is to record the complete code and the game or application that produced it. DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED (0x887A0005) can mean a graphics card was physically removed or that a driver upgrade occurred; DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG and DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET describe different device failures. The code does not, by itself, prove that your GPU is defective.
Work from the least destructive checks to the most serious: verify the application’s requirements, follow its support instructions, investigate driver timing and known regressions, return overclocked hardware to stable settings, and only then consider broader hardware diagnosis. If you develop the affected Direct3D application, device and resource recreation is part of the required recovery path.

What does a DXGI device error mean?
DXGI is the DirectX Graphics Infrastructure layer that connects a Windows application to the graphics driver and GPU. A device message means that this graphics path reported a removal, hang, reset, invalid call, or internal driver failure. It identifies what the graphics stack reported at that moment; it does not identify a single guaranteed root cause.
Keep the exact error text, hexadecimal value, affected title, graphics adapter, Windows version, and the event that preceded the failure. A crash that began immediately after a driver update needs a different investigation from one that occurs only in a single game after a particular scene or setting.

“Removed” is especially easy to misread. Microsoft’s definition includes a video card that was physically removed, but it also includes a graphics-driver upgrade. In ordinary troubleshooting, the message can therefore reflect a software transition rather than a card that has fallen out of its slot. “Hung” and “reset” likewise describe reported device behavior, not a component test with a pass-or-fail result.
What is the difference between DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, HUNG, and RESET?
The code matters because Microsoft assigns different meanings and recovery expectations to each result. Use the table as a starting point, not as proof that one component has failed.

DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED |
0x887A0005 |
The video card may have been physically removed, or a driver upgrade may have occurred. | Check driver timing, application behavior, system stability, and possible physical hardware problems. A Direct3D application must recreate the device and its dependent resources after this condition. |
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG |
0x887A0006 |
A device failure associated with badly formed commands from the application. | For software developers, investigate command construction and rendering logic as a design-time issue. Players should also apply the game’s own support guidance. |
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET |
0x887A0007 |
A device failure involving a badly formed command; a reset requires application recovery. | Developers should recreate the Direct3D device and device-dependent resources. Players should check the game, driver, and system-stability branches below. |
Microsoft also lists DXGI_ERROR_DRIVER_INTERNAL_ERROR and DXGI_ERROR_INVALID_CALL among possible removal reasons. DXGI_ERROR_INVALID_CALL indicates invalid parameter data. These labels are evidence from the graphics stack, not a diagnosis that the graphics card must be replaced.
The same title can expose a different code after a driver change, a patch, or a different rendering path. Treat the hexadecimal value as part of the symptom record. Copy it from the crash dialog, log, or support report instead of relying on a shortened phrase such as “DXGI crash.”
What information should I capture before trying a fix?
Capture the context first so that each later change can be evaluated. Changing several variables at once can hide the cause.
- Copy the complete error string and hexadecimal code, including whether it says
REMOVED,HUNG, orRESET. - Record the exact game or application, its edition or build if shown, and whether other titles fail.
- Note the graphics adapter model, Windows version, and current graphics-driver version.
- Write down whether the problem began after a game update, Windows update, graphics-driver update, hardware change, overclock, or change in graphics settings.
- Describe the trigger: launch, loading a level, changing resolution, entering a cutscene, or playing for a period of time.
- Record whether the computer remains stable outside the affected application. System-wide freezes, restarts, or unrelated application failures change the priority of the investigation.
This record lets you compare the failure with the documented code meanings and with the affected application’s support instructions. It also gives a manufacturer or technician something reproducible to review instead of a general report that “DirectX stopped working.”
How do I fix a DXGI error as a player?
Use a staged process. Start with requirements and application-specific guidance, then investigate drivers and stability. None of these checks is a guaranteed cure for every DXGI message.
1. Check the game’s requirements and support page
Confirm that the PC meets the title’s minimum graphics, processor, memory, operating-system, and storage requirements. Compare the actual graphics adapter model and system memory with the publisher’s listed minimums, not just the fact that another game runs. If the requirements are met, read the game publisher’s own DXGI troubleshooting instructions before applying advice written for another engine.
For example, SEGA’s Football Manager support guidance asks players to check minimum requirements and, when those requirements are met, reinstall the graphics driver. That advice is specific to Football Manager; it should not be treated as a universal sequence for every game. Preserve the game name when searching for support because two titles can display similar DXGI text while using different rendering paths.

Check whether the publisher identifies a particular build, patch, graphics API, or known issue. If the failure started after a game update, include that update in the support request. A title-specific workaround can be useful while a generic Windows change can obscure the comparison.
2. Use the correct graphics-driver source
Use the graphics-card maker’s documented driver path for a desktop card. On a laptop, the computer manufacturer may provide the driver that is validated for that model, so check the maker’s support page as well as the GPU vendor’s instructions. Laptop firmware, power profiles, and switchable-graphics arrangements can make a manufacturer package more appropriate than an unverified generic package.
Windows provides driver actions through Device Manager: open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the affected adapter, and review the available update, rollback, or uninstall/reinstall options. Microsoft’s code-43 guidance documents those general driver-handling operations; code 43 is a separate condition and is not interchangeable with a DXGI device error.
Record the current version before changing it. Follow the vendor’s installation instructions and avoid changing multiple graphics packages at the same time. After the change, reproduce the same action that previously failed rather than relying on a single successful launch. If the error occurs only after extended play, test for a comparable period before concluding that the change helped.
3. Roll back when the timing points to a regression
If the DXGI message started immediately after a graphics-driver update, compare that date with the failure and read the vendor’s release notes. AMD recommends reviewing release notes and returning to the last version that worked when a documented problem or workaround applies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A rollback is a diagnostic branch, not proof that every new driver is defective. Write down the version you tested, the date, and the result. If the previous version does not resolve the issue, restore the vendor-supported version and continue with the application and stability checks instead of repeatedly changing drivers without recording results. A driver that fixes one title can still expose a separate problem in another, so test the affected workload.
4. Remove overclocking while diagnosing
Return the graphics processor, central processor, and memory to stable factory settings before drawing conclusions. Intel lists unstable graphics, processor, or memory overclocking among possible avenues to investigate, and AMD’s stability guidance discusses restoring factory settings when overclocking or overheating is involved.
Disable both manual settings and automatic performance profiles while testing. Test at stock settings long enough to repeat the original workload. If the error disappears only after an overclock is removed, the overclock is part of the failure conditions; that does not establish that the underlying GPU is permanently damaged. Conversely, one successful short session at stock settings is not enough evidence if the original failure required a long play session.
5. Check whether the failure is application-specific
Run another known-stable graphics application only as a comparison, not as a benchmark. A failure confined to one title increases the importance of that title’s requirements, patches, configuration, and support instructions. A failure that follows you across several applications points toward a broader driver, stability, memory, power, or hardware investigation.

Use the same adapter and normal display setup for the comparison. Note whether the second application fails at launch, under a similar workload, or not at all. Do not generalize a fix from one game to another. The same Windows error family can be emitted by different engines for different reasons.
6. Investigate memory and wider hardware only when symptoms persist
If the problem continues across applications after driver and configuration checks, collect system-specific evidence and involve the device maker or a qualified technician. Intel lists possible memory failure among the avenues to investigate after its other suggestions.
This is a diagnostic possibility, not a finding about your RAM or GPU. Look for corroborating symptoms such as broader system instability, rather than treating one DXGI message as a component test. Keep notes on crashes outside games, unexpected restarts, display corruption, and whether returning to factory settings changed the behavior. Those observations help separate a graphics API event from a wider system problem.
7. Decide whether a graphics-card replacement is justified
Do not begin by buying a new GPU. Microsoft’s definition of DEVICE_REMOVED includes a driver upgrade as well as physical removal, and its device-loss guidance discusses driver bugs and hardware failure as separate possibilities.

A replacement becomes reasonable only after evidence supports a physical graphics-card fault and the proposed card is compatible with the PC’s power supply, slot, case, firmware, and other components. Check these compatibility requirements before spending money: a physically larger card may not fit, a power supply may lack the required capacity or connectors, and a system firmware or slot limitation can prevent an otherwise suitable card from solving the problem. Until diagnosis supports replacement, keep the existing card and continue the diagnostic record.
What should developers do after device removal or reset?
For a Direct3D application, a device-loss code is an application-recovery event. Microsoft’s documented sequence is to obtain the removal reason, release invalid device-dependent objects, and recreate the device and every resource that depends on it.
- Detect
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVEDorDXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESETat the relevant rendering or presentation point. - Call
GetDeviceRemovedReasonbefore releasing the old device so the application records the more specific reason. - Release references to invalid device-dependent resources and the old swap chain. Ensure that hidden references held by managers, views, or command objects are also released by the application’s normal ownership system.
- Recreate the Direct3D device and swap chain using the application’s normal initialization path, including the adapter and feature-level choices appropriate to the program.
- Recreate textures, buffers, views, shaders, render targets, depth resources, pipeline state, and other resources that depended on the old device.
- Rebuild any application-side state that assumed the old device was valid, then resume rendering or present a controlled recovery message.
Microsoft states: “Any time your app receives the DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED error, it must reinitialize the Direct3D device and recreate any device-dependent resources.” This is developer guidance, not a registry edit or a command that repairs a player’s PC.
Call the removal-reason method while the old device is still available, because releasing objects first can discard the context needed to identify the event. The recovery path should also avoid presenting with the old swap chain after the reset. A successful recreation must include every dependent resource, not merely a new device pointer.
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG deserves a different development investigation because Microsoft associates it with badly formed commands from the application and identifies it as a design-time issue. Review command construction, resource state assumptions, and the rendering operation that preceded the failure. A reset can also follow a badly formed command. AMD GPUOpen describes timeout-detection-and-recovery (TDR) situations in which a GPU crash can result in DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_RESET, DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED, or DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG; the application still has to handle the reported condition correctly.

Which troubleshooting branch fits my symptoms?
Choose the branch that matches your evidence instead of ranking causes without the code, game, and system context.
The error began after a driver update
Record the version and date, read the vendor’s release notes, and consider a rollback to the last known-good version when the vendor documents that path. If the rollback changes nothing, return to the supported driver and examine the game’s requirements and configuration.
Only one game fails
Start with that game’s requirements, patches, and support page. A game-specific workaround may be appropriate for its engine but unsafe to generalize to other titles. Include the exact title and build when contacting support.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Prioritize stock hardware settings, driver consistency, and broader system diagnosis. Persistent failures across applications justify collecting logs and contacting the PC or graphics-card maker; they do not, by themselves, prove that the GPU must be replaced.
The machine is unstable as well as the game
Remove overclocks and investigate memory or other hardware with qualified assistance if instability continues. Keep the DXGI code as one piece of evidence rather than the whole diagnosis.
The message appears only after a long session
Record how long the application runs before failing and whether the same timing occurs at factory settings. This pattern makes stability and hardware evidence worth collecting, but it does not identify overheating, memory failure, or a defective GPU by itself. Use the vendor’s stability guidance and seek device-specific help if the behavior continues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I avoid when a DXGI message appears?
- Do not treat
DEVICE_REMOVEDas automatic proof of a dead graphics card. - Do not apply a support recipe written for a different game without checking that game’s requirements and instructions.
- Do not equate Windows code 43 with a DXGI device code; Microsoft’s code-43 page is useful for general driver-handling context only.
- Do not leave CPU, GPU, or memory overclocks enabled while trying to determine whether the system is stable.
- Do not use a registry modification as a substitute for the application’s required device-recreation path.
- Do not change drivers, game settings, and hardware simultaneously; record each change and its result.
- Do not infer a physical fault from one crash without checking whether the event follows a driver upgrade or remains confined to one application.
- Do not buy replacement hardware before checking compatibility and gathering evidence that the existing card is physically faulty.
How can I tell whether a driver change actually helped?
Use a repeatable comparison. Record the driver version, stock or overclocked settings, title and build, graphics settings, and the exact action that triggers the error. Reproduce that action after each single change. A launch that succeeds once does not establish a fix if the original failure occurred during a longer session or a particular scene.
If the result changes, keep the earlier version and notes available. This makes it possible to return to a known-good configuration and gives the game publisher, GPU vendor, or computer maker precise information about the regression. If no branch changes the behavior, stop cycling through unrecorded driver installations and escalate with the complete record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are DXGI device errors the same as Windows error code 43?
No. Code 43 is a separate Windows device condition. Microsoft’s code-43 documentation can explain general update, rollback, and reinstall actions, but it does not make code 43 and DXGI device messages equivalent.

Why does a DXGI error appear in only one game?
Different games submit different rendering commands and have different requirements, patches, and recovery behavior. An application-only failure makes that title’s support guidance and configuration more relevant than a system-wide hardware conclusion.
Which graphics driver should I use on a gaming laptop?
Check the laptop manufacturer’s support page first because its driver may be validated for the model’s firmware and power design. The GPU vendor’s instructions can provide additional context, but a generic package is not automatically the best diagnostic choice for every laptop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I change the Windows TDR registry settings to stop DXGI crashes?
Registry changes are not the documented first-line repair for these messages. For players, follow the game, driver, and stability checks; for developers, implement the documented removal-reason and device-recreation sequence instead.
Does DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED mean my graphics card is dead?
No. Microsoft documents both physical removal and a driver upgrade as meanings of that code. Check driver timing, the affected application, stock hardware settings, and broader symptoms before considering a hardware fault.
What does DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG mean for a player?
Microsoft associates HUNG with a device failure involving badly formed commands from the application and treats it as a design-time issue. Follow the game publisher’s support guidance, especially if only one title fails, rather than assuming the GPU needs replacement.
When should I reinstall a graphics driver?
Use the game publisher’s and hardware vendor’s documented procedure. SEGA’s Football Manager guidance, for example, recommends reinstalling when minimum requirements are met; that instruction is specific to Football Manager. Record the version and test result so the change remains reversible.

Should I replace my GPU after repeated DXGI errors?
Only after evidence supports a physical graphics-card fault. Confirm compatibility with the power supply, slot, case, firmware, and other components; a DXGI code alone is not enough to justify the purchase.
What should a Direct3D developer do after DEVICE_REMOVED?
Call GetDeviceRemovedReason before releasing the old device, release invalid device-dependent resources and the old swap chain, recreate the Direct3D device, and recreate every dependent resource. This is application recovery, not a Windows repair command.
The Bottom Line
Start with the exact DXGI code and the affected application. Check that title’s requirements and support page, use the correct vendor driver path, consider a documented rollback after a regression, and test with CPU, GPU, and memory overclocks removed. Persistent failures across applications warrant broader diagnosis, but DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED alone does not prove a dead GPU. Replace hardware only when a physical fault is supported by evidence and the replacement is compatible. Developers must obtain the removal reason and recreate the Direct3D device and all dependent resources after removal or reset.
