How do I fix Epic Games error SU-PQR1603 or SU-PQE1223?
Use the following sequence. Start with the least invasive checks, and only change security settings temporarily for diagnosis.

Run the Epic Games Launcher as administrator

On a typical 64-bit Windows PC, installing the x64 package does not automatically replace an x86 dependency. If the installer or launcher requires a 32-bit runtime, x86 is the relevant package. Follow Microsoft’s operating-system and package guidance, restart Windows if requested, and then retry the Epic launcher.

Verify read and write permissions for the install folder
Locate the folder containing the Epic Games Launcher. Right-click it, choose Properties, open the Security tab, select your Windows user account, and inspect the permissions list.

-SkipBuildPatchPrereqswitch tells the launcher shortcut to skip the build-patch prerequisite check. Temporarily test antivirus or firewall interference
Security software can block an updater from downloading, unpacking, or writing prerequisite files. Temporarily disable the antivirus or firewall component you suspect, launch Epic Games once as a diagnostic test, and immediately restore protection afterward.
Epic notes that these applications protect your device, so do not leave them disabled while you continue using Windows. If the launcher works only during the test, re-enable protection and contact the developer of that antivirus or firewall for an exception or compatibility fix instead of repeatedly running the PC unprotected.

How should I choose the Visual C++ package architecture?
Match the redistributable architecture to the application component that needs it, not simply to the label on your Windows edition. Microsoft’s supported documentation lists separate x86, x64, and ARM64 packages, and Epic identifies the Visual C++ redistributable as an official prerequisite path.
x86
Use x86 when the launcher component or prerequisite is a 32-bit application. A 64-bit Windows installation can still run 32-bit software, so “64-bit Windows” alone does not rule out x86.
x64

ARM64

How do I verify Epic Games Launcher folder permissions?
The launcher must be able to read its existing files and write updated files in its installation directory. A successful administrator launch does not prove that your normal account has the required permissions, so inspect the folder directly.
- Exit Epic Games Launcher and confirm it is not still running in the notification area or Task Manager.
- Find the launcher installation folder, right-click it, and choose Properties.

- Confirm Allow is present for both Read and Write.

How do I use -SkipBuildPatchPrereq safely?
Use the switch only after the ordinary administrator, Windows-update, launcher-installer, runtime, and permission checks have failed. It changes the shortcut command so the launcher skips its build-patch prerequisite check during startup.
Append the switch exactly as -SkipBuildPatchPrereq, including the leading space before the hyphen. Do not replace the existing executable path or remove quotation marks around a path that contains spaces. After applying the change, run that shortcut as administrator and observe whether the launcher completes its update.
The switch is attached to the shortcut, so another shortcut or a direct executable launch may not use it. Once the launcher has been repaired, remove the appended switch from the Target field and return to the normal shortcut.
What if antivirus or a firewall appears to cause the failure?
A security application is a possible blocker when the launcher works only while that protection is paused. Treat this as an isolation test, not a permanent solution.
- Close the launcher before changing protection settings.
- Disable only the relevant antivirus or firewall feature for the shortest practical test.
- Run the launcher once, preferably as administrator, and note whether the prerequisite step now completes.
- Re-enable the protection immediately, whether the test succeeds or fails.
- If the test identifies the blocker, contact that security product’s developer for a compatible allow-list or configuration.
