Error 0x00000058 is the Windows bug check FTDISK_INTERNAL_ERROR. Microsoft defines it as a boot failure caused by starting Windows from the wrong copy of a mirrored partition. The documented fix is to reboot from the valid shadow partition, not to run a registry cleaner or blindly replace drivers. If you cannot identify which mirrored copy is valid, stop before changing partitions and protect your data; an incorrect write can make recovery harder.

This guide explains what the stop code means, how to choose the correct mirrored copy, what to do when Windows will not start, and how to investigate a recurrence on Windows 11 or Windows 10.

What does error 0x00000058 mean?

Microsoft’s Windows driver documentation names 0x00000058 FTDISK_INTERNAL_ERROR. The bug check is issued when the system boots from the wrong copy of a mirrored partition. In a mirror, two storage copies are intended to contain the same system data. Windows gives one copy a primary role and keeps another as a shadow or secondary copy that can be used when the primary is unavailable.

The stop code appears when Windows’ registry hives say that the mirror is valid even though the copy being used is not the correct one. Microsoft says this condition is almost always caused by the primary partition being revived after the shadow copy had become the valid copy. In other words, the machine can be looking at an older or inconsistent system image while its boot metadata says that image is healthy.

Term Meaning in this error
0x00000058 The numerical bug-check value displayed on the blue screen or in a crash record.
FTDISK_INTERNAL_ERROR Microsoft’s symbolic name for the bug check.
Mirrored partition A system partition represented by two storage copies intended to stay synchronized.
Primary partition The copy Windows normally treats as the main member of the mirror.
Shadow partition The alternate mirror member that may contain the valid bootable state.
Registry hives Core Windows registry files whose mirror-status information can point to the wrong member.

This is not the same thing as a System Restore point or a Volume Shadow Copy snapshot. “Shadow partition” here describes the alternate member of a mirrored disk arrangement. Treating it as an ordinary restore point can lead you to the wrong recovery tool.

Why does Windows show FTDISK_INTERNAL_ERROR?

The direct cause is a mirror-selection mismatch: the booted copy and the copy identified as valid by the registry hives do not agree. The usual history is that the primary partition was brought back online after the shadow copy had become the trustworthy member. Windows then starts from the wrong side of the mirror and stops with 0x00000058.

What you observe What it can indicate Appropriate response
The first crash follows a disk replacement, mirror repair or storage outage. The mirror may have changed roles or been resynchronized incorrectly. Record which member was replaced or revived and have the storage administrator verify the layout before rebooting repeatedly.
The stop code returns after a successful boot. The underlying mirror state may still be inconsistent, or a hardware, driver or software fault may be causing another restart. Use the staged Windows checks in this guide and capture a dump if the failure is reproducible.
A new device or driver was installed immediately before repeated crashes. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts can be caused by hardware, its driver or software. Disconnect the recent hardware, then inspect and roll back the associated device or driver in Safe Mode if necessary.
The machine cannot identify the valid mirror member. The storage configuration is not sufficiently understood for safe trial-and-error. Do not randomly change boot order, initialize disks or delete partitions; escalate with the mirror documentation and a backup.

A general hardware or software problem can explain why the computer keeps restarting, but it does not replace the specific 0x58 explanation. The first decision is always whether the machine is booting from the wrong mirrored copy.

Is error 0x00000058 a virus, bad RAM or a dead disk?

Not by itself. Microsoft’s definition identifies a mirrored-partition boot problem, not a malware infection, a guaranteed memory failure or a particular failed disk model. Hardware, drivers and software can cause unexpected restarts around the same time, so they should be checked when the stop code recurs, but the code alone cannot prove any of those faults.

  • Do not assume malware. Run a reputable security scan if there are other signs of tampering, especially when the boot record may have been altered, but do not describe 0x58 itself as an infection.
  • Do not assume RAM is defective. Use Windows Memory Diagnostic and review its result before replacing memory.
  • Do not assume one disk is bad. A mirror-role or synchronization error can produce the stop code even when both devices are physically readable.
  • Do not use a registry cleaner as the first fix. The documented remedy is selecting the valid mirrored copy, not deleting or rewriting registry entries at random.

The safest initial posture is observational: write down the exact stop code, photograph any recovery message, note recent storage changes, and avoid actions that write to either mirror member until their identities are clear.

How do I reboot from the shadow partition?

Microsoft’s direct resolution is to reboot the system from the shadow partition. That instruction assumes you know which physical or virtual storage member is the valid shadow copy and which management interface controls your mirror. Microsoft’s public reference does not provide a universal consumer click path for identifying that member, because mirror implementations differ.

  1. Stop repeated trial boots. If every attempt writes logs or recovery changes to the wrong member, the two copies can diverge further. Power down normally when possible rather than cycling the machine over and over.
  2. Document the layout. Record the machine’s storage controller or software-mirror arrangement, disk serial numbers, partition names, and any status shown by the server, workstation or recovery console. If the computer belongs to an organisation, obtain the mirror runbook from its administrator.
  3. Protect user data. Confirm that a current backup exists. If no backup is available and the data is important, make a sector-level or administrator-approved backup before changing mirror roles; do not initialize, format or convert a member.
  4. Identify the valid shadow member using the tool that created the mirror. Depending on the installation, that may be a storage-controller utility, a software-mirror management console or an enterprise recovery environment. Use the labels and health information supplied by that system rather than guessing from drive letters.
  5. Select the shadow member as the boot source. Change the mirror’s boot or active-member selection according to the storage documentation, then restart once. The goal is to boot the known-valid copy, not merely to move a generic BIOS boot entry up or down.
  6. Verify the result. After Windows starts, check that the expected profile, applications and recent files are present. Record which member was used and leave the other copy untouched until its synchronization state has been checked.

If you cannot distinguish primary from shadow, do not improvise with Disk Management, diskpart, firmware “reset to defaults” options or partition deletion. The correct next step is an administrator or storage specialist who can inspect the mirror without overwriting either copy. A professional recovery service may be appropriate when the layout is unknown and the data is at risk.

What should I do if Windows will not boot normally?

Use Windows Recovery or Safe Mode for non-destructive checks, but keep the mirror-selection issue in view. Safe Mode can help you remove a recently changed device or driver; it cannot by itself decide which mirrored partition is valid.

Enter the recovery options

On a system that still reaches the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Restart. You can also use the recovery entry in Settings: on Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now; on Windows 10, the corresponding path is generally Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup. Labels can vary after servicing updates.

If Windows never reaches those screens, interrupt startup only as a last resort to make Windows Recovery Environment appear, or boot from organisation-approved Windows installation or recovery media. Avoid selecting options that reset or reinstall Windows until the mirrored data has been assessed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start Safe Mode

  1. In Windows Recovery Environment, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  2. After restart, choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking only if network access is required for a specific diagnostic.
  3. When Safe Mode loads, first record the stop-code history and recent changes. Then inspect Device Manager and Event Viewer before uninstalling anything.

If the machine boots only in Safe Mode, that pattern makes a recently loaded driver or service more plausible, but it does not disprove a mirror problem. Keep the storage configuration unchanged while you investigate.

How do I diagnose a recurring 0x00000058 crash?

Microsoft’s broader stop-code guidance supports a staged process. Work from the least destructive checks to the more advanced ones, and restart only when a step requires it.

1. Disconnect hardware added before the first crash

Power off and disconnect a new USB device, storage enclosure, expansion card or other hardware added immediately before the problem began. Leave essential input and display hardware connected. Start Windows again and see whether the recurrence changes. If removing the device helps, keep it disconnected while you obtain a current driver or firmware package from its manufacturer.

2. Inspect Device Manager

Open Device Manager and look for warning icons or devices whose status changed around the first failure. For a recently changed device, use its Properties page to review the driver date and provider. Depending on what changed, update the driver, disable the device temporarily or uninstall the recent driver, then restart. Perform removal from Safe Mode when normal startup is not stable, and keep a record of every change so you can reverse it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Review Event Viewer at the crash time

Open Event Viewer, select Windows Logs > System, and filter or scan for Critical and Error events in the minutes before the restart. Record the event source, event ID, named driver, controller and disk identifier. An event that names a storage controller or device does not automatically prove it is defective; use it to focus the mirror and hardware checks.

4. Install Windows, BIOS/UEFI and firmware updates

Install pending Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10. Separately check the computer or motherboard manufacturer for current BIOS/UEFI and storage-controller firmware. Read the manufacturer’s instructions first: firmware updates can change boot settings, and you should not apply one while the mirror’s valid member is unknown or while power is unreliable.

5. Verify free space

Microsoft’s advanced guidance recommends keeping roughly 10–15 percent of a system volume free, although the exact requirement varies by configuration. In File Explorer, check the free space on the Windows volume and on any volume used for crash dumps. If space is low, remove or move known personal files and use Windows’ built-in storage cleanup carefully; do not delete mirror metadata or recovery partitions.

6. Test memory

Search for Windows Memory Diagnostic, choose the option to restart and check for problems, and let the test complete. After Windows returns, open Event Viewer and navigate to Windows Logs > System; look for the MemoryDiagnostics-Results event. A clean result lowers the likelihood of a memory fault but does not prove the mirror is correct, and a reported error should be followed by testing modules and slots according to the computer manufacturer’s procedure.

7. Check the file system

Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run a built-in disk check against the Windows volume. For a normal online scan where the system volume is C:, the command is:

chkdsk C: /scan

Use the actual Windows volume letter shown by your installation or recovery environment; it may differ outside normal Windows. If Check Disk reports problems that require an offline repair, read its proposed action and make sure the mirror layout and backups are understood before scheduling writes.

8. Repair protected Windows files

From an elevated command prompt in normal Windows or Safe Mode, run:

SFC /scannow

Wait for verification to reach 100 percent and save the result. System File Checker can repair missing or corrupted protected Windows files, but it does not choose the correct mirrored partition. A successful scan therefore does not make it safe to ignore the FTDISK_INTERNAL_ERROR storage diagnosis.

9. Check for boot-record tampering when evidence supports it

If Event Viewer, security software or a recent incident suggests that the master boot record (MBR) may have been altered, run a security scanner that specifically checks the MBR. This is a targeted check, not a reason to label every 0x58 incident malware. Follow the scanner’s quarantine and recovery instructions, and avoid writing a new boot record until the mirrored copies and backups are accounted for.

10. Capture a memory dump if the failure remains reproducible

When the crash can be reproduced and the mirror is known or has been protected, configure Windows to create an Automatic memory dump. Open System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings, then choose the automatic dump type and confirm the dump path. Microsoft lists %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP for the main dump and %SystemRoot%Minidump for small dumps. After the next crash, open the dump in WinDbg and preserve the analysis output, stop-code parameters and any named storage or driver module for the administrator or support engineer.

Which recovery choice is safest for my situation?

The right action depends on three things: whether Windows can boot, whether the mirror layout is known, and how much a proposed action can write to the disks.

Situation Access Storage certainty Recommended first action Risk level
Windows starts and the mirror layout is documented Normal Windows Known Record the stop code, verify mirror status with the approved management tool, and select the valid shadow member if required. Lower when no partition is initialized or deleted.
Windows starts only intermittently Normal Windows or Safe Mode Known or partly known Back up important data, inspect logs and recent drivers, then capture a dump if the crash repeats. Moderate; avoid repeated role changes.
Windows loops during startup Recovery Environment or Safe Mode Known Use Safe Mode for device and driver checks, while preserving the documented mirror relationship. Moderate.
Windows will not boot and the mirror layout is unclear Recovery only Unknown Stop destructive repairs and obtain storage-specialist help with both members and a backup image. High if you initialize, format or resynchronize blindly.
Data is irreplaceable or no backup exists Any Any Minimize writes and use an approved recovery professional before changing the mirror. Highest.

How can advanced users analyze a dump?

A dump is useful when the stop code returns after the mirror has been correctly selected or when several possible hardware and driver causes remain. Configure dumping only after confirming that the dump volume has enough free space and that writing the dump will not alter an unverified mirror member.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open System Properties, choose Advanced, then open Startup and Recovery > Settings.
  2. Under Write debugging information, select Automatic memory dump and keep the displayed path. The standard locations are %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP and %SystemRoot%Minidump.
  3. Reproduce the failure only when necessary and only after saving work. If a dump is created, copy it without modifying the original.
  4. Open the copy in WinDbg. Start with the debugger’s automatic analysis, then record the bug-check code, parameters, suspected module and stack context. A storage-driver name is a lead to verify against Device Manager, firmware and Event Viewer, not proof that the file is the root cause.
  5. Give the dump, mirror diagram, disk identifiers, Event Viewer entries and exact timeline to the person responsible for the storage system.

Small dumps can omit context that a full or automatic dump contains. Conversely, a dump may be impossible to write when the system volume is full or the machine loses power abruptly, so the absence of a file does not rule out a storage problem.

What mistakes should I avoid while fixing 0x00000058?

  • Changing BIOS boot order repeatedly. Boot order selects a device or entry; it does not necessarily select the valid member inside a software or controller-managed mirror.
  • Initializing a disk that Windows reports as unknown. Initialization can overwrite partition information needed for recovery.
  • Formatting or deleting the “old” member. The member that looks old may contain the only valid system state.
  • Forcing a resynchronization before identifying the source. A resync from the wrong side can copy stale data over the good copy.
  • Installing random driver packages. Use the computer or device manufacturer’s release and keep a rollback plan.
  • Running registry-cleaning utilities. They do not implement Microsoft’s documented shadow-partition fix and can remove information needed for diagnosis.
  • Resetting or reinstalling Windows first. Those operations can overwrite evidence and both mirror members; reserve them for a documented recovery plan.
  • Assuming a single successful boot means the issue is solved. Verify the mirror state and monitor whether the stop code returns after a restart.

When should I stop troubleshooting and get specialist help?

Escalate before making storage changes when any of the following is true:

  • You cannot name the mirror technology or identify the primary and shadow members.
  • The computer contains the only copy of important files.
  • The storage controller reports degraded, foreign, missing or conflicting members.
  • Recovery tools offer to initialize, format, convert or resynchronize a disk.
  • The machine repeatedly crashes after the shadow member has been selected, or a dump points to a storage driver that has no safe rollback.
  • You suspect boot-record tampering and cannot preserve a clean backup.

Provide the specialist with the exact 0x00000058 value, the Windows edition, mirror diagram, disk serial numbers, recent changes, Event Viewer exports and any dump files. That evidence is more useful than a list of utilities already tried.

If you prefer an optional automated shortcut after trying the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, tune settings that contribute to CPU, RAM and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and keep an app-crash log. Frequently Asked Questions

Can changing the BIOS boot order fix 0x00000058?

Usually not. BIOS or UEFI boot order chooses a device or boot entry, while this stop code concerns which member of a mirrored partition Windows considers valid. Use the storage system’s mirror-management controls instead of guessing with firmware entries.

Will error 0x00000058 delete my personal files?

The stop code itself does not mean that files have been deleted. However, initializing, formatting or resynchronizing the wrong mirror member can overwrite recoverable data, so keep writes to a minimum until the valid copy is identified.

Does System Restore repair FTDISK_INTERNAL_ERROR?

System Restore is not Microsoft’s documented remedy for this bug check because the failure is tied to mirror selection. Consider it only within a recovery plan that has already protected the mirrored data and confirmed that the storage relationship is correct.

Which Windows editions can show this stop code?

The Microsoft troubleshooting guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. The exact mirror-management interface depends on the storage controller, software configuration and edition, so the steps for selecting a shadow member are not identical on every computer.
