Stop code 0x000000A3 means ACPI_DRIVER_INTERNAL. Windows’ ACPI driver detected an internal inconsistency, and Microsoft identifies a BIOS error as one possible source. The crash can also involve a recently changed device, an incompatible driver, faulty hardware, or damaged Windows files. Start by recording the exact code and any named module, undoing recent hardware changes, and trying Safe Mode. Then check drivers, Windows updates, free disk space, BIOS/UEFI firmware, and manufacturer diagnostics in that order. Do not confuse 0xA3 with 0x000000A5 (ACPI_BIOS_ERROR) or 0x000000E0 (ACPI_BIOS_FATAL_ERROR); the digits determine which troubleshooting path applies.
What does Windows stop code 0x000000A3 mean?
0x000000A3 is the bug check named ACPI_DRIVER_INTERNAL. ACPI is the interface through which Windows and your computer’s firmware coordinate power management, device configuration, sleep states and related hardware functions. The code tells you that the ACPI driver found an inconsistency; it does not identify a single failed part or prove that Windows itself is corrupted.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMicrosoft’s documentation lists a BIOS error as one possible source. In practice, the trigger may be firmware, a device driver, a newly attached component, a physical fault, or damaged system or file-system data. There is no published, dated success-rate or prevalence statistic for this specific stop code, so treat each occurrence as a diagnostic case rather than expecting a universal fix.
Is 0x000000A3 the same as other ACPI blue-screen codes?
No. Read every digit on the blue screen or black-screen stop message before changing anything. These neighboring codes point to different documented conditions:

| Code | Official name | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| 0x000000A3 | ACPI_DRIVER_INTERNAL | The ACPI driver detected an internal inconsistency. |
| 0x000000A5 | ACPI_BIOS_ERROR | An ACPI BIOS error was reported. |
| 0x000000E0 | ACPI_BIOS_FATAL_ERROR | A fatal ACPI BIOS error was reported. |
A fix aimed at 0xA5 or 0xE0 may not address 0xA3. If the screen shows a different value, stop and use the instructions for that code instead.
What should I record before trying a fix?
Capture evidence while the message is visible. It can prevent a restart from erasing the clue you need later.
- Write down the full stop code, including leading zeroes, and any text such as a named
.sysmodule. - Note what changed immediately before the first crash: a BIOS update, Windows update, driver installation, new RAM, storage, dock, USB device, graphics card or other peripheral.
- Record whether the crash occurs during startup, sleep or wake, gaming, shutdown, or only when a particular device is connected.
- Photograph the screen if the machine restarts too quickly to copy the details.
A named module is a lead, not proof of the original cause. Windows may identify the component that noticed the inconsistency rather than the hardware or firmware that created it.
How do I undo a recent hardware change?
Remove the newest variable first. Microsoft lists undoing recent hardware changes as a basic first response to recurring stop errors.
- Shut down completely. If Windows will not shut down normally, hold the power button only long enough to turn the computer off.
- Disconnect newly installed or recently used peripherals: USB hubs, docks, external drives, printers, Bluetooth adapters, expansion cards and other accessories. For an internal component, power off, unplug the computer and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions.
- Leave essential keyboard, mouse, display and power connections attached, then start Windows again.
- If the crash stops, reconnect one device at a time and restart between additions. The device present when the error returns is a strong suspect; test its driver and the manufacturer’s diagnostics before replacing it.
Do not repeatedly unplug components while the system is running, and do not open a laptop or desktop that is still under a service agreement unless the maker permits user replacement.
How do I start Windows 11 or 10 in Safe Mode?
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers, making it useful when normal startup crashes. From the Windows recovery environment, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode. If Windows cannot reach that menu, interrupt startup two or three times with the power button; Windows should enter Automatic Repair, where Advanced options is available.

In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and inspect devices changed shortly before the first 0xA3. For the suspect device, you can:
- Roll back driver: open the device’s Properties, choose the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver when available.
- Update driver: install a package from the computer or device manufacturer for the exact model and Windows edition.
- Disable device: temporarily prevent it from loading to test whether the crash stops.
- Uninstall device: remove the recent driver package, then restart and install a known-good package.
Prefer official packages supplied for your exact computer model. If disabling a device makes Windows stable, leave it disabled only long enough to obtain a supported driver or arrange service.
Have I installed all Windows updates and kept enough free space?
Install current updates after the machine is stable enough to remain powered on. Open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11 or Windows 10, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart as requested. Microsoft’s general stop-error guidance also recommends keeping roughly 10–15% of the system drive free so Windows can create temporary files and crash dumps.
Use Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10) to review space. Remove or move files you recognize, empty temporary data through Storage settings, and avoid deleting unfamiliar folders from the Windows directory. Free space is a prerequisite for reliable recovery and dump creation; it is not evidence that deleting junk alone caused or will cure an ACPI fault.

Because Microsoft identifies a BIOS error as one possible source of 0xA3, firmware belongs early in the investigation. Use the support page for the exact computer model and hardware revision, not a package intended for a similar model.
- In Windows, press
Win+R, entermsinfo32, and note System Model, BIOS Version/Date and the Windows edition. If Windows will not stay running, record the model from the chassis label or firmware setup screen. - On the manufacturer’s support site, locate BIOS/UEFI releases for that model. Read the release notes for ACPI, stability, power-management or compatibility changes and follow the maker’s required order.
- Back up important files. Connect AC power, ensure the battery is charged, disconnect unnecessary peripherals and prevent sleep or shutdown during the process.
- Run the manufacturer’s update utility or copy the approved firmware to the required USB drive exactly as the instructions specify. Do not use a BIOS file for another model or interrupt the update.
- After the restart, enter firmware setup if instructed, load the manufacturer’s recommended defaults, save and boot Windows. Recheck the BIOS version in
msinfo32.
A firmware flash is less reversible than a driver rollback and can make a computer unbootable if interrupted or mismatched. If the machine is unstable, ask the manufacturer about an approved recovery method rather than experimenting with unofficial firmware.

How do I run hardware and memory diagnostics?
Use the diagnostic environment supplied by the computer manufacturer whenever possible. It can test memory, storage, the system board, processor and other platform components before Windows loads.
- Find the maker’s documented hardware-diagnostic key or recovery option for your model and run the full available test, not only a quick check.
- Run an extended memory test if one is offered. Intermittent RAM errors may require several passes or testing modules individually according to the maker’s procedure.
- Record every failure identifier, component name and diagnostic code, including the date and BIOS version.
- If a test reports a failed part, stop swapping random components. Give the code to the manufacturer or authorized service provider and ask which replacement is supported.
A clean diagnostic does not prove that firmware or drivers are healthy, but a reproducible hardware code is stronger evidence than a guess based only on the blue-screen module name.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can System File Checker or disk checking repair 0xA3?
They can repair Windows-file or file-system problems that contribute to stop errors, but they do not replace BIOS, driver and hardware investigation for an ACPI-specific crash. Run them only after backing up important data and while signed in with an administrator account.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Note whether it repaired files, found corruption it could not repair, or found no integrity violations. - For a file-system check that can run while Windows is online, run
chkdsk C: /scan. ReplaceC:if Windows is installed on another volume. - Restart and test the workload that previously caused 0xA3. If SFC reports unrepaired files or the disk check reports errors, preserve the messages for support and follow Microsoft’s repair guidance rather than deleting system files manually.
Do not treat a successful SFC result as proof that the BIOS or a device driver is good; the checks answer different questions.
How do I capture and read a crash dump?
A dump can reveal the failing module and call stack when the crash repeats. It is an advanced diagnostic path and a named Windows module still does not prove that module was the original hardware cause.
- Press
Win+R, entersysdm.cpl, open the Advanced tab, and under Startup and Recovery select Settings. - Under Write debugging information, choose Automatic memory dump or Kernel memory dump. Keep the default system drive and ensure it has enough free space.
- Clear Automatically restart temporarily if you need time to read the stop screen, then select OK and restart.
- After the next crash, look for small dumps in
%SystemRoot%Minidump. Kernel and automatic dumps are stored in%SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP. - Open the dump in Microsoft WinDbg, load symbols as prompted, and run
!analyze -v. Save the output, the stack, the stop parameters and the timestamp for the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
Dump analysis is most useful when several crashes point to the same third-party driver or pattern. It cannot by itself confirm a defective motherboard, firmware image or peripheral.

When should I use Driver Verifier?
Use Driver Verifier only as a targeted diagnostic after ordinary driver isolation has produced a credible suspect. Microsoft warns that verifying every driver can degrade performance and leave the system unusable.
- Back up important files and create a recovery path before enabling it.
- Press
Win+R, enterverifier, choose to create standard settings, and select only suspicious, recently updated, third-party or unsigned drivers. Do not select all drivers as a shortcut. - Restart and reproduce the crash. Verifier may deliberately trigger a more specific stop code that identifies the tested driver.
- If Windows cannot boot, enter Safe Mode, open an elevated Command Prompt and run
verifier /reset. Restart normally, then remove or roll back the suspect driver.
Leave Verifier off after the diagnostic session. It is not a routine performance tool and should not be enabled indefinitely on a production or gaming system.

Choose the next action by the evidence it produces, how reversible it is and the risk to booting. This order avoids random registry edits and unnecessary part replacement.
| Path | Best evidence | Reversibility | Boot risk | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remove recent hardware | Crash disappears with one device disconnected | High | Low | The problem began after adding or reconnecting equipment. |
| Safe Mode and driver rollback | Stability returns with a driver disabled or reverted | High | Low | Normal startup is unstable or a driver changed recently. |
| Windows Update and free-space check | System reaches a current, writable state | High | Low | Updates are pending or the system drive is nearly full. |
| BIOS/UEFI update | Firmware version and release notes match the model | Low | Higher | Firmware is old, the maker lists a relevant fix, or other steps fail. |
| OEM diagnostics | Component result or diagnostic code | Not applicable | Low | The crash persists or occurs before Windows loads. |
| Dump analysis | Repeatable module and stack pattern | High | Low | The stop error repeats and you can keep the machine running long enough to collect dumps. |
| Driver Verifier | Targeted driver-specific crash evidence | High if reset | Higher | A suspicious third-party driver remains after normal isolation. |
What if 0xA3 appears after a BIOS update?
Do not immediately flash the same BIOS again. Confirm the installed version, load the maker’s recommended defaults, disconnect newly added peripherals and test Safe Mode. Check the release notes and the manufacturer’s recovery or rollback policy for your exact model; some systems permit a supported rollback while others do not.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the update was interrupted, used the wrong image or left the computer unable to boot, stop repeated attempts and contact the manufacturer with the model, serial information, firmware version and any recovery-screen message. Firmware recovery is model-specific, so a generic USB procedure can increase the damage.
When should I contact the PC manufacturer?
Escalate when the firmware is current but the crash persists, diagnostics report a platform component, the computer cannot remain booted, or the dump and driver tests do not isolate a cause. Microsoft’s guidance makes BIOS and vendor analysis the appropriate next step for unresolved platform faults.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can 0x000000A3 damage my files or SSD?
The stop code itself is a protective shutdown, not a diagnosis that storage has failed. Unsaved work can be lost, and repeated forced shutdowns can worsen an existing file-system problem, so back up important data and review disk diagnostics rather than assuming the drive is safe or dead.
Why does my computer crash only when it wakes from sleep?
Sleep and wake exercise ACPI power-state transitions, so a firmware, chipset, graphics, USB or dock driver can be exposed only at that moment. Disconnect the dock or peripheral, test with the latest model-specific drivers and firmware, and record whether disabling sleep changes the pattern.
Can I fix ACPI_DRIVER_INTERNAL by editing the registry?
There is no general registry edit supported by the documented 0xA3 guidance. Random edits can create new boot and power-management problems; use reversible driver isolation, firmware checks and OEM diagnostics first.
What information should I send with a Windows crash dump?
Send the dump file together with the exact stop parameters, timestamp, Windows build, BIOS version, computer model and any recent hardware or driver change. Include the output of !analyze -v, while noting that its named module is a lead rather than conclusive proof of the failed component.
