Error 0x0000015F is Windows’ CONNECTED_STANDBY_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT_LIVEDUMP identifier. Microsoft says it “can never be used for a real bug check”; it identifies a live diagnostic dump rather than a conventional blue-screen stop code. The associated problem is usually Modern Standby failing to reach or maintain deep idle, which can cause battery drain, wake-ups, or activity while the screen is off.
Do not replace hardware based on 0x15F alone. First establish whether Windows created only a live dump or actually restarted, then use powercfg, SleepStudy, Event Viewer, Device Manager and, if necessary, WinDbg to identify the driver, device, firmware or service preventing low-power idle.

The hexadecimal value maps to CONNECTED_STANDBY_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT_LIVEDUMP. A connected-standby watchdog records a session in which the computer did not enter or remain in the low-power state expected when the display is off. Microsoft’s bug-check reference explicitly states that this code cannot be used for a real bug check; it is used to identify live dumps.
On systems that support Modern Standby, the relevant sleep state is usually Standby (S0 Low Power Idle). A processor, driver, peripheral or firmware component can keep working often enough to reduce screen-off battery life. The code therefore describes a power-state symptom, not a named failed component.

Is 0x0000015F a blue screen or a sleep error?
It is primarily a sleep and power-management diagnostic clue. A live dump can be logged without a visible blue screen, while a separate restart or stop screen may have another code and cause.
Confirm what Windows actually did
- Note whether the laptop merely woke with lower battery, restarted unexpectedly, displayed a stop screen, or became unstable after resume.
- Open Event Viewer by pressing
Win+R, enteringeventvwr.msc, and checking Windows Logs → System around the time of the sleep or restart. Look for sleep, resume, Kernel-Power, driver and hardware events. - Check

Use the built-in power-state report before changing drivers or firmware. It tells you which sleep states the exact Windows installation supports and explains why an unavailable state cannot be used.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
powercfg /a - Read the output. A Modern Standby computer normally lists Standby (S0 Low Power Idle), with network connected or disconnected. Systems without S0 may expose traditional S3 sleep instead, so a connected-standby diagnosis is less likely to apply in the same way.
Save the output in your notes, including the Windows edition and build. Sleep behavior, available reports and vendor packages can differ between models even when both computers run Windows 10 or Windows 11.
How do I generate SleepStudy and power reports?
SleepStudy and powercfg are the most useful first-line tools because they show whether the machine reached DRIPS, how much energy a session consumed, why it exited standby and which software or device remained active.
Create a Modern Standby report
- In the elevated Command Prompt, run:
powercfg /sleepstudy - For a longer sample, run:
powercfg /sleepstudy /duration 7 - Open the HTML file created by Windows. The default report covers three days; the duration option requests a seven-day window.
Create the system power-transition report
- Still in an elevated prompt, run:
powercfg /systempowerreport - Open the resulting HTML report and correlate sleep, resume and connected-standby transitions with the time of the 0x15F event.
What to inspect in the reports
- DRIPS or low-power-state percentage: a low percentage means the system spent too little of the session in its deepest idle state.
- Drain rate: compare unusually high drain with a normal sleep session on the same computer.
- Exit reasons: identify whether a timer, network activity, device event or another transition ended standby.
- Top Offenders and device sections: look for a process, driver or peripheral that remains active or repeatedly wakes the system.
- Session color and duration: a long, persistently active or red-marked session deserves attention before you change unrelated settings.
Generate a second report after each meaningful change. Improvement means higher DRIPS time, lower standby drain and fewer unexplained exits; the absence of improvement is evidence to reverse that change and investigate another component.

Which manual fixes should I try first?
Apply changes in an evidence-led order. Start with reversible software updates, then isolate hardware and only afterward consider deeper diagnostics.
1. Install Windows updates
Open Settings → Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available quality, cumulative and optional driver updates that are appropriate for your model, and restart. Record the update date so you can correlate a change in SleepStudy with the installation.
2. Update the platform firmware and drivers from the right vendor
Use the support page for the exact computer model, or for the exact component in a custom PC. Prioritize the item named by SleepStudy, Event Viewer, Device Manager or dump analysis, then update the BIOS or UEFI, chipset, storage, network, graphics, audio, Bluetooth and other relevant drivers. Microsoft directs users to the responsible hardware or software vendor for driver, BIOS, firmware, diagnostic and compatibility support.
Do not mix packages from a different model or use a generic BIOS image. Read the vendor’s Windows 10 or Windows 11 compatibility notes, keep the computer on AC power during firmware installation and do not interrupt a firmware update.
3. Roll back or remove a recent change
If the problem began immediately after a driver, BIOS update, peripheral installation or major application change, reverse that change where the vendor supports rollback. In Device Manager, right-click the suspected device, choose Properties → Driver, and use Roll Back Driver when available. If rollback is unavailable, uninstall the device or driver only when you have a known-good replacement and a recovery path.
4. Disconnect newly added hardware
Shut down, remove USB hubs, docks, storage devices, wireless adapters, capture hardware or other peripherals added before the symptom, then test several sleep sessions. Reconnect one item at a time. A device that changes the SleepStudy offender list is a stronger suspect than a component selected only because it is convenient to replace.

5. Check Device Manager for warnings
Press Win+X and choose Device Manager. Expand the categories related to the report, look for yellow warning icons, and inspect Properties → Events and Driver. Update, disable or uninstall the implicated device only after documenting its current driver version and confirming that you can restore it.
6. Keep adequate free storage
Check Settings → System → Storage or This PC in File Explorer. Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends keeping roughly 10–15% of the system drive free, because Windows and applications need working space for swap and other operations. Freeing space is a prerequisite check, not proof that storage shortage caused 0x15F.
7. Run targeted hardware and file checks
Use the computer maker’s hardware diagnostics when SleepStudy or Event Viewer points to a component. For built-in checks, run mdsched.exe for Windows Memory Diagnostic, use the manufacturer’s storage test or an appropriate disk check, and run System File Checker from an elevated prompt:
sfc /scannowThese tests can identify memory, storage or system-file problems, but a clean result does not clear a third-party driver that keeps Modern Standby active.
What should I do if normal Windows is unstable?
Safe Mode loads only essential drivers and services, making it useful for removing a recent driver or service when normal startup repeatedly crashes.
- Open Settings → System → Recovery and select Restart now beside Advanced startup. If Windows will not stay open, interrupt startup twice to reach Windows Recovery.
- Choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- Select Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking only when network access is necessary.
- In Safe Mode, roll back or uninstall the recently changed driver or service, then restart normally and generate a fresh power report.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic environment, not a permanent operating mode. If the symptom disappears there, the difference in loaded drivers and services narrows the search.

How can I analyze a dump with WinDbg?
Use dump analysis when the issue repeats, the machine restarts, or SleepStudy identifies a session but not the responsible module. A dump can connect the failure to a driver or service that ordinary event text does not name.
- Open System Properties → Advanced → Startup and Recovery → Settings and configure Windows to write an automatic memory dump appropriate to your support workflow.
- Install the Windows debugging tools and open the resulting dump in WinDbg.
- Set Microsoft’s public symbol path to https://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols.
- Run:
!analyze -v - Review
IMAGE_NAME,MODULE_NAMEandSTACK_TEXT. Treat a named module as a lead to verify against its vendor and version, not as automatic proof that the file itself is defective.
Keep the dump, WinDbg output, Windows build, BIOS version and exact hardware model together. A vendor can interpret a complete evidence set more effectively than a screenshot containing only 0x15F.
When is Driver Verifier appropriate?
Driver Verifier is a focused stress test for suspicious, recently changed, third-party or unsigned drivers. It is not a first step for every 0x15F event.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt and configure verification only for the small group of drivers supported by your evidence.
- Restart and reproduce the problem while monitoring for a more specific crash dump.
- Do not select every driver at once. Broad verification can significantly slow Windows and trigger additional crashes.

Use the resulting dump to identify a driver version and obtain a corrected package from the computer or component manufacturer. Disable verification after the focused test rather than leaving it enabled indefinitely.
