Error 0x000002CD is the Win32 status ERROR_WAS_LOCKED (decimal 717). Windows uses it when a low-level request tries to lock a virtual-memory page that is already locked. The message is usually shown as “{Page Locked} One of the pages to lock was already locked.”
This is not a Windows Update or activation diagnosis, and the code does not identify one universal faulty program. The application, driver, installer, or task that displayed it is the most useful clue. Start by recording that context, then restart once, update or reinstall the implicated software, check drivers, isolate third-party services, and use Windows repair commands if the problem persists.

Microsoft maps hexadecimal 0x000002CD to decimal 717 and the symbolic name ERROR_WAS_LOCKED. Its documented text is “{Page Locked} One of the pages to lock was already locked.” The wording describes a status returned by Windows system code, not a diagnosis of a particular consumer application.
The terminology comes from virtual-memory management. Microsoft’s VirtualLock API locks committed pages in a process’s virtual address space into physical memory so that access does not incur a page fault. VirtualUnlock has the opposite requirement: the target range must already be locked. If any page in the range is not locked, the call fails with ERROR_NOT_LOCKED. These API rules explain why 0x000002CD points toward application or driver memory-management logic, but they do not prove that every occurrence comes from one specific API call or program.
Is 0x000002CD a Windows Update or activation error?
No. The code is a Win32/API-level status and should not be treated as proof that Windows Update, activation, licensing, or a Windows installation USB is broken. A game launcher, installer, hardware utility, service, or driver can surface the same status while performing its own memory operation.

Why does Windows say that one of the pages to lock was already locked?

- More than one program: If unrelated applications show the message, broaden the investigation to Windows servicing, drivers, storage, firmware, available disk space, and hardware diagnostics.
What should I record before trying a fix?
Capture the evidence while the failure is reproducible. This prevents a generic repair step from hiding the component that actually needs an update.
- Copy the complete message, including any program name, file path, installer name, or additional error text.
- Write down the exact action immediately before the message: launching a game, installing a patch, connecting a device, waking from sleep, or starting Windows.

How do I fix error 0x000002CD on Windows 11 and 10?
Use the following sequence from least disruptive to more involved. Stop when the error is gone, but keep the context you captured so you can reverse a change or explain the result to the software or hardware vendor.
1. Restart Windows and retry once
Save your work, choose Start > Power > Restart, and repeat the exact action that produced the message. A restart ends processes that may have left an overlapping memory state and reloads drivers and services. Treat this as a diagnostic retry, not as evidence that the underlying component is permanently repaired.
2. Update or reinstall the implicated application
If one program consistently triggers the error, use that publisher’s current Windows 10 or Windows 11 build and its documented support instructions. Uninstalling and reinstalling can repair damaged program files, but back up saves, profiles, plug-ins, or custom settings first if the application stores them locally.
Do not download a replacement executable or dynamic-link library from an unofficial file site. Use the publisher’s installer or a trusted distribution channel, and check whether the publisher lists a compatibility, patch, or known-issue note for your Windows edition.

Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting it, or by searching for the name from the Start menu. Expand the device category associated with the failure and look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the suspected device and choose Update driver.
- Install the current driver supplied by the device or computer manufacturer when Windows does not find a suitable update.
- If the problem began immediately after a driver change, open Properties > Driver and use Roll Back Driver when that option is available and appropriate.
- Restart and test the original action again.
For a graphics, audio, network, storage, Bluetooth, USB, or printer failure, identify the exact device rather than updating unrelated hardware at random. A warning-free Device Manager does not prove that every driver is current, so check the manufacturer’s support page when the symptom remains.

4. Temporarily remove variables and use a clean boot
Disconnect nonessential external hardware and retry. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time to identify the trigger. Consider whether recently installed third-party security software or another low-level utility is involved; do not leave protection disabled permanently.
To isolate startup software, press Windows key + R, enter msconfig, and open System Configuration. On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then disable the remaining services temporarily. On the Startup tab, open Task Manager and disable nonessential startup items. Restart and test.
A clean boot is an isolation test, not a final configuration. If the error disappears, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups, until the responsible software is identified. Restore normal startup afterward and update or remove the component that reproduces the problem.
5. Repair the Windows image with DISM
If several programs are affected or system servicing appears damaged, open Command Prompt (Admin) or Windows Terminal (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt, then run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for the operation to finish; interrupting it can leave servicing incomplete. Restart Windows when it reports completion and test again. DISM repairs the component store used by Windows servicing; it does not identify which third-party application originally requested the page lock.
6. Check the system drive for file-system errors
From the same elevated command window, run:
chkdsk /f C:Administrator permission is required. If the system drive is in use, Windows may ask to schedule the check for the next restart; type Y and restart when convenient. Allow the scan to finish, especially on a large or heavily used drive. Back up important data before disk repair if you suspect storage trouble.

7. Bring the platform up to date
Install current Windows cumulative updates, hardware drivers, BIOS or UEFI firmware, and device firmware that your computer manufacturer supports. On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the computer still runs Windows 10 in 2026, check whether it meets Windows 11 requirements and plan a supported migration where practical. 8. Run focused hardware and storage diagnostics
If the error continues across unrelated applications, run the computer maker’s hardware diagnostics and an appropriate memory test. Verify that the system drive has adequate free space and review storage-health information supplied by the drive manufacturer. These checks can reveal a broader platform problem, but 0x000002CD alone is not proof of bad RAM, a failing SSD, or malware.
9. Escalate with the evidence you collected
Contact the publisher of the application or the manufacturer of the implicated hardware when the issue is reproducible after updates and isolation. Choose the narrowest route supported by your evidence. A problem confined to one application should not lead immediately to disk repair, while a failure affecting many unrelated programs warrants broader system checks.

What should I not infer from this error?
- It is not proof that Windows Update or activation is broken.
- It is not a guarantee that
VirtualLockis the direct culprit; the connection is a technical interpretation of the page-lock wording and Microsoft’s memory API documentation. - It is not a code-specific reason to replace RAM, an SSD, or the registry, and a registry cleaner is not an established remedy.
- It is not evidence that the computer is infected. Use your normal security software and follow its alerts separately from this status code.
