How do I fix 0x00000958 when it appears in Windows Update?
Use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting flow, then perform a fresh update check. The menus differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Troubleshoot, then Other troubleshooters.

Shut down and unplug printers, scanners, USB storage, docks, external drives, and other peripherals that are not required for the upgrade. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and hardware needed to operate the computer. Reconnect devices after setup succeeds, one at a time, so a returning failure can be associated with a specific device.
2. Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the device categories and look for a yellow warning icon or an “unknown device.”
- Open the device’s Properties and read the status message on the General tab. Record the device name and status code.

5. Repair the Windows image with DISM
- Open an elevated Command Prompt or Windows Terminal.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for the operation to reach completion. A successful result means DISM completed its repair operation; it does not prove that an unrelated installer, driver, or hardware fault is fixed. Restart Windows and retry the upgrade.
6. Investigate setup logs if setup still fails
