Error 0x00001A9B means Windows could not open a Transactional NTFS “miniversion” with permission to modify it. Microsoft names this condition ERROR_CANT_OPEN_MINIVERSION_WITH_MODIFY_INTENT. It usually points to the program or component requesting the transactional file operation, not proof that your hard drive, Windows installation, or personal files are damaged. Start by identifying the application that triggers the message, then repair or reinstall that application. Use SFC and DISM when Windows system-file damage is plausible, and reserve CHKDSK for clear file-system or disk symptoms. The recovery options at the end become progressively more disruptive, so back up important files before using System Restore, Reset this PC, or installation media.

TxF can make file operations part of a transaction, but Microsoft strongly recommends that developers use alternative methods and warns that TxF may not be available in future Windows versions. What should I try first?
Repair the component that produces the message before changing Windows system files. This sequence is the least disruptive and best matches an API-level modify-intent failure.
- Reproduce the error once. Note whether it occurs at launch, during an update, while opening a particular file, or during backup or restore.
- Check for an application update. Use the vendor’s official updater or download page. Avoid unofficial repackaged installers.
- Use the application’s repair option. In Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10), select the program, choose Advanced options when available, and select Repair. Some desktop installers instead provide Repair in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Reinstall if repair does not help. Back up the program’s saves, profiles, or license information first. Uninstall it, restart Windows, obtain the current installer from the vendor, and install again.
- Test without optional extensions. If the program supports plug-ins, shell extensions, or third-party add-ons, disable them temporarily. A single extension can be the process making the invalid request.
If the error disappears after this process, no system-wide repair is justified. If it persists across applications or remains after a clean reinstall, continue with Windows integrity checks.
How do I run System File Checker (SFC)?
SFC scans protected Windows system files and replaces incorrect versions when it can. It is appropriate when the error is accompanied by Windows component failures, damaged built-in tools, or problems in more than one application.
- Save open work.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. The account must be a member of the local Administrators group. - Run:
sfc /scannow- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
- Read the final message. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, found corrupt files it could not repair, or could not perform the requested operation.
A successful repair is meaningful only if the triggering action works afterward. If SFC says it could not repair some files, do not repeatedly run the same command; repair the Windows image with DISM and then run SFC again.

What should I do when SFC cannot repair files?
DISM checks and repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source. Run the commands in an elevated Command Prompt, in the order shown.

Restart after DISM completes, then run sfc /scannow again. If DISM cannot obtain or repair the required components, record the exact error text rather than substituting random files from another computer. The Windows edition and build must match any repair source used by an administrator.
Will CHKDSK fix 0x00001A9B?
CHKDSK is not a general fix for this code. Use it when you also have file-system or disk symptoms, such as unreadable folders, repeated file-copy errors, unexplained volume warnings, or evidence that files are becoming inaccessible.

What if the error continues after SFC, DISM and CHKDSK?
Move through Windows recovery from least to most disruptive. The labels and available choices can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases, so follow the options displayed on the affected device.
Try built-in troubleshooters and remove a recent update
Open the recovery or troubleshooting area in Settings and run any troubleshooter that matches the symptom. If the code began immediately after a Windows update, use the option to uninstall the latest quality or feature update when it is offered. This changes system components and requires a restart.
Use System Restore
System Restore can return system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs to an earlier restore point. It does not provide a universal repair and it may not be available if no restore point exists. Review the affected-program list before confirming.
Start Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows cannot start normally, hold Shift while selecting Restart, or use the recovery entry shown by the device. Reset this PC
Reset offers choices that may keep personal files or remove everything, while installed applications and settings are generally removed. Read the exact summary page, export browser data and application saves, and verify that you have recovery keys and passwords before proceeding.
Reinstall from installation media
If reset is unavailable or fails, create Windows installation media on another working computer and perform the appropriate repair or reinstall. Microsoft specifies a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB for installation media. A USB drive is not required for SFC, DISM, or CHKDSK. If the computer depends on manufacturer-specific drivers or factory applications, the manufacturer’s recovery media may be preferable.

Confirm that you can sign in to your Microsoft account or retrieve application licenses, and record any drive-encryption recovery key. Recovery operations can remove apps, settings, or files depending on the choice.

Use a simple evidence threshold instead of treating every 0x00001A9B message as a failing drive.
- Application evidence: the same program fails while other programs and Windows tools work normally. Prioritize its update, repair, clean reinstall, and vendor support.
- Windows-file evidence: several unrelated applications fail, built-in tools report missing components, or SFC identifies protected-file corruption. Use DISM followed by SFC.
- Disk evidence: file-copy failures, unreadable directories, volume warnings, or slow and unstable storage accompany the code. Back up data and then use CHKDSK appropriate to the symptom.
- Change-related evidence: the issue starts directly after an update or installation and is not tied to one app. Consider update removal or System Restore before resetting Windows.
There is no published incident-rate or repair-success percentage for this error, so a precise probability cannot be assigned from the code alone.
Is error 0x00001A9B a virus or proof that my files are damaged?
No. The definition describes an unsuccessful transactional modify-open request; it does not identify malware or establish that user files are corrupt. Scan with your existing security software if you have independent reasons for concern, but do not treat this hexadecimal value as a diagnosis of infection. Likewise, do not delete transactional or system files manually in an attempt to clear the message.
