Error 0x0000255A is not a generic Windows crash. It is the Win32 DNS error DNS_ERROR_NOT_ALLOWED_ON_ROOT_SERVER, which means Windows rejected an operation because it was sent to a DNS root-server or root-hints context. Microsoft defines it as: “The operation requested is not permitted on a DNS root server.” The durable fix is to identify the operation, target server and zone, then perform the change in the correct authoritative or delegated DNS namespace. If the code appeared during Windows Update or an upgrade instead, use the separate servicing path described below.
What does error 0x0000255A mean?
The hexadecimal value 0x0000255A is decimal 9562. Its symbolic Win32 name is DNS_ERROR_NOT_ALLOWED_ON_ROOT_SERVER. The name describes a DNS administration rule, not a failed graphics driver, damaged game, or ordinary desktop hardware fault.

A DNS root-server context is the top of the DNS hierarchy. A Windows DNS server can also be configured with a root (often represented by a dot zone) or root hints used for recursion. Ordinary records and custom zones should be created on the authoritative server that hosts that namespace, or in the delegated child namespace. Sending a record, zone or delegation operation to the root-server context is what triggers this response.
The code alone does not identify which management layer made the request. DNS Manager, a PowerShell script, Active Directory-integrated DNS, an installer, or another Windows component can surface the same value. The operation and target therefore matter more than the number by itself.

Is 0x0000255A specific to Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. The code is a Win32 DNS status used by both Windows 10 and Windows 11 when the same server-side rule is encountered. It is not evidence of a particular build, game, or hardware model.
Support context still matters when the message appears during servicing. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 computer in 2026 has a different update and upgrade support baseline from a supported Windows 11 installation. That date does not change the meaning of the DNS error; it changes which servicing options are available for the operating system.

What should I record before changing DNS?
Capture the failed request before deleting a zone, changing root hints or retrying repeatedly. A concise record lets a DNS or Active Directory administrator reproduce the problem without guessing.
- Exact action: state whether you were creating a forward-lookup zone, adding a host record, changing delegation, editing root hints, running a DNS PowerShell command, or responding to an error from Windows Update or another component.
- Target server: record the DNS server name or address selected in DNS Manager, the script’s
-ComputerNamevalue, and whether the server is local or remote. - Zone and namespace: write the complete zone name, including whether it is an internal, public, delegated child or reverse-lookup namespace.
- Account and role: note whether the request used an administrator account and whether the server is standalone, Active Directory-integrated, authoritative for production, or intended to perform recursion.
- Time and evidence: save the exact text, timestamp, screenshots and any PowerShell or event-log output. Do not rely on the hexadecimal code alone.
How do I check whether the DNS operation is aimed at the wrong namespace?
Start by confirming that the selected server hosts the namespace you intend to change. The goal is not to remove configuration until the server’s role is understood.
Inspect the zones in DNS Manager
- Open Server Manager, choose Tools, and open DNS.
- Expand DNS, select the server shown in the error, and expand Forward Lookup Zones and Reverse Lookup Zones.
- Locate the authoritative zone that should contain the record or child namespace. A normal host record belongs inside that zone, not at the DNS root.
- Check whether a root (dot) zone or root-server configuration is present. Treat it as a role-setting, not as a place to store an ordinary organization’s records.
- If you are changing a delegated child, confirm that the parent zone contains the required delegation and that the child zone is hosted on the intended authoritative server.
Names and roles vary by environment. A public domain, an Active Directory namespace and a reverse-lookup zone are different namespaces even when the same server hosts them. Choose the zone that is authoritative for the name you are changing.
Use read-only PowerShell checks
Run these commands in an elevated PowerShell session on a DNS server, or against a remote server where your account has permission. They inspect configuration; they do not repair it.

In the examples, dns01 and example.internal are illustrative names; use the actual server and zone you documented. If the command is unavailable, you may be on a computer without the DNS Server management tools, or you may not have the required role or permissions.
How do I correct a mis-targeted DNS record or zone operation?
Once you know the intended namespace, repeat the operation against its authoritative server and zone. Make a configuration backup or export according to your organization’s change procedure before altering production DNS.
Creating or changing a host record
- In DNS Manager, select the server authoritative for the forward-lookup zone.
- Open that zone, not the root-server or root-hints view.
- Choose the appropriate record type, such as a host (A or AAAA) record, and enter the name and address supplied by your network design.
- Review the time-to-live and any existing record with the same name before saving.
- After replication or the expected propagation interval, query the authoritative server directly to confirm the result.
If the name is in a delegated child namespace, create it in the child zone. Adding it to the parent or root context does not make the child authoritative.
Creating a new zone
- Determine whether the zone should be primary, secondary, stub or Active Directory-integrated, and identify its authoritative servers.
- In DNS Manager, right-click Forward Lookup Zones (or the appropriate reverse-zone container) on the intended authoritative server and start the new-zone wizard.
- Enter the actual zone name. Do not use the root-server context for an organization’s custom namespace.
- For an Active Directory-integrated zone, select the replication scope that matches your domain design and confirm that domain controllers can host it.
- Verify name-server records, delegation and transfers before allowing clients to depend on the new zone.
If the server is intentionally a root server, do not convert it casually. A root role can be part of a larger DNS architecture; changing it may affect recursion and every client that relies on that server.

Delegation belongs in the parent zone and points to authoritative servers for the child. Root hints are used to find DNS roots for recursive resolution; they are not a substitute for a zone’s authoritative data. If the failed task involved either setting, compare the requested change with your documented DNS design and have the DNS owner approve it before applying it.
Do not delete a root zone, root hints or an Active Directory-integrated zone merely to make the error disappear. Export the configuration, record the current settings and establish a rollback plan first. A successful save followed by broken name resolution is a worse outcome than the original error.

What if 0x0000255A appeared during Windows Update or an upgrade?
In an update or upgrade workflow, the code may be reported by a Windows component rather than by a person administering DNS. Treat that as a servicing problem first; changing authoritative DNS can be unrelated and risky.
- Run the built-in Windows Update Troubleshooter from Windows Settings and apply its recommended repairs.
- Restart the computer, then check for updates again.
- For an upgrade failure, disconnect nonessential hardware and install all updates and device drivers available for the current installation.
- Temporarily remove non-Microsoft antivirus software during the upgrade if Microsoft’s procedure calls for it, then reinstall or re-enable protection afterward according to the vendor’s instructions.
- Check available disk space and system-file health. Use Windows’ own storage and system-repair tools, and record any separate error they report.
- Retry in a clean-boot environment if background software is suspected of interfering with setup.
These measures address update and upgrade conditions. They do not redefine 0x0000255A; if the same code returns while you are editing DNS, return to the namespace and server-target checks instead.

How can I verify that the correction worked?
Verification should test both the administrative change and the client behavior that depends on it.
- Reopen the intended zone in DNS Manager and confirm that the record, delegation or zone exists on the authoritative server.
- Query the authoritative server directly with
nslookupor PowerShell’sResolve-DnsName, specifying that server rather than relying only on the client-configured resolver. - Test from a second DNS client or network segment when the namespace is used beyond one workstation.
- For Active Directory-integrated DNS, allow expected replication time and verify the change on another domain controller before declaring success.
- Repeat the original operation once, with the same target and namespace, and save the result and timestamp.
A client cache flush can remove stale answers, but it cannot authorize an operation on a root server. Use ipconfig /flushdns only when you have independently established a client-cache issue; it is not a repair for this server-side status.
Which remediation path fits the situation?
Use the least disruptive path that matches where the code appeared. The table separates DNS administration from Windows servicing so that a harmless client step is not mistaken for a server repair.

When should I stop and contact a DNS administrator?
Escalate before making changes when the server is authoritative for a production namespace, is Active Directory-integrated, hosts delegations, or has root-hints settings you do not fully understand. Also escalate when the target server is managed by another team or when the error appears on multiple domain controllers.

Include whether the request came from DNS Manager, a script, Active Directory DNS or Windows servicing. This information distinguishes a wrong target from a permissions issue, replication delay or an unrelated update failure without requiring destructive experiments.
