Error 0x00003635 is the Windows code ERROR_IPSEC_IKE_RPC_DELETE, which Microsoft defines as “Deleted by using an RPC call.” That identifies an IPsec/IKE-related event, not a universal Windows failure. The code alone does not prove that Windows Update, a damaged installation, malware or a hardware part caused the problem.

The correct fix depends on where you saw it: an update screen, an application, or a VPN/IPsec event log. Preserve the surrounding message and the action that came immediately before it, then follow the matching troubleshooting path below.

What does error 0x00003635 mean?

Microsoft’s Win32 error reference assigns 0x00003635 the symbolic name ERROR_IPSEC_IKE_RPC_DELETE and the description “Deleted by using an RPC call.” In practical terms, the code points toward an IPsec/IKE operation in which something was deleted through a remote-procedure call.

The definition does not identify the application, VPN profile, policy, certificate, network adapter or Windows component that generated the message on your computer. Microsoft’s entry also does not provide a code-specific repair procedure. Treat the code as a clue about context, not as a diagnosis.

IPsec is used for authenticated and encrypted network connections, and IKE is the key-exchange component commonly involved in establishing or managing those connections. That terminology explains why the code may appear near a VPN or managed tunnel, but it does not identify a particular vendor or prove that the tunnel itself is defective. A Windows service, a VPN client, a gateway, or another program can be the component that records the event.

The word “deleted” should not automatically be read as “your files were deleted.” The official sentence describes an operation carried out through an RPC call. Without the surrounding provider, event ID, connection name and timestamp, you cannot tell what object was removed or whether the action was expected cleanup.

How do I find where 0x00003635 came from?

Before changing Windows settings, establish whether the code came from an update workflow, a program, or a managed network connection. The source determines who can actually correct the underlying problem.

  1. Capture the exact wording. Copy the complete dialog, event details or connection message, including any event ID, provider name and additional hexadecimal codes.
  2. Record what was happening. Note the application or VPN name, the connection being used, the time, and the action immediately before the message appeared.
  3. Check whether it repeats. A one-time event during disconnect or restart has different significance from a code that returns whenever you sign in, install updates or establish a tunnel.
  4. Distinguish a dialog from a log entry. An Event Viewer entry may describe an internal operation that did not block Windows, while an application dialog or failed connection usually requires support from that application or connection owner.

For a logged event, open Event Viewer, browse to the channel named in the event, and use the event’s Copy command to save the details as text. Keep the original timestamp and provider information when asking for help.

What details are most useful to support?

Prepare a short timeline rather than sending only the hexadecimal value. Include the Windows version, whether the device is managed by an organization, the network type (home, office, hotspot or another connection), the VPN or application name and version, and whether the issue began after sleep, a restart, an update or a network change. Add the exact local time and time zone if a remote administrator must match your report with a gateway log.

Do not edit the copied event text to remove the provider or event ID. Those fields can identify which component logged the message. You can redact usernames, public addresses or other sensitive information according to your organization’s policy, but tell the administrator that redaction was made.

How do I troubleshoot 0x00003635 if it appeared during Windows Update?

Use Microsoft’s normal Windows Update troubleshooting path, but do not describe it as a guaranteed fix for this code. The official definition does not establish that 0x00003635 is an update-specific error.

Windows 11

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Troubleshoot, and choose Other troubleshooters.
  3. Find Windows Update and select Run.
  4. Apply any recommendation the troubleshooter reports, restart the PC, and return to Settings > Windows Update to check again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
  3. Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter.
  4. Restart when prompted, then use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to check for updates again.

Labels can vary slightly by Windows build. If the troubleshooter reports a separate error number, missing service or policy restriction, record that information; it is more actionable than 0x00003635 by itself. If updating succeeds and the code appears only once in a log, avoid treating the log entry alone as evidence that Windows is damaged.

Keep the update history entry even if the retry succeeds. A successful second attempt and a recurring failure mean different things, and the history provides the date and package information that Microsoft support may request. If an organization controls update policies, contact its administrator before changing those policies locally.

What should I avoid during an update investigation?

Do not clear update databases, disable security software, remove VPN certificates or reset networking solely to make the code disappear. Those actions can erase useful evidence or create a second problem. First determine whether the update actually failed and whether another, more specific error was recorded. The Windows Update troubleshooter is a general diagnostic route, not proof that the IPsec/IKE code caused the update failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the code appeared during a VPN or IPsec connection?

This is the context most directly suggested by the symbolic name. A managed VPN or IPsec deployment may be controlled by an employer, school, hosting provider or VPN vendor, so the administrator or provider—not a generic Windows repair step—may need to inspect the policy and server-side logs.

  1. Write down the exact VPN or connection profile name and the time of the failure.
  2. Provide the complete event or dialog text, including the provider, event ID and any neighboring entries.
  3. Describe whether the failure happened while connecting, renewing credentials, waking from sleep, switching networks or disconnecting.
  4. Send those details to the network administrator or VPN provider and ask them to correlate the timestamp with gateway and authentication logs.

Ask whether the connection is centrally managed and whether a recent policy, certificate or gateway change occurred. You are not trying to guess which setting is wrong; you are giving the owner enough information to compare the client event with the server-side record. If the provider supplies a prescribed client update or profile, follow that documented procedure rather than downloading an unrelated “VPN repair” utility.

Do not change encryption policies, delete certificates, disable the firewall or lower security settings solely because this code appeared. The code does not identify a bad certificate, an incorrect policy or a failing adapter, and changing those controls can create a security or connectivity problem without addressing the source.

What if the VPN works despite the event?

Record whether the tunnel remained usable. A single cleanup event during disconnect, sleep or restart may have no visible impact. If the event repeats during every connection, interrupts traffic, or appears with authentication and negotiation failures, escalate it with the complete timeline. The recurrence and effect on the connection are more informative than the hexadecimal value alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if an application displayed 0x00003635?

When a program shows the code in its own dialog, that program is the first support boundary. Windows’ symbolic name does not reveal which API call the application made or why it attempted the deletion.

  1. Close and reopen the application once, then note whether the same action reproduces the message.
  2. Check the application’s own log folder or support panel for a fuller error, session ID or server name.
  3. Check View reliability history from the Windows search box for a failure at the same time; record the application name and fault details rather than relying on the hexadecimal code alone.
  4. Give the application publisher the captured text, version, Windows edition, connection type and reproduction steps.

If the program is a VPN client, follow the VPN/IPsec procedure instead of repeatedly reinstalling the application. If it is unrelated to networking, the publisher may be able to explain why it surfaced an IPsec/IKE error from a shared Windows component.

Check whether the program was performing a sign-in, synchronization, tunnel change or shutdown when the message appeared. That action can help the publisher reproduce the condition. Do not assume that running the program as administrator, changing compatibility settings or deleting its data will repair the issue; those changes are not established remedies for this code.

Should I run system repairs, replace hardware or reinstall Windows?

Not as an automatic response to 0x00003635. Microsoft’s broader Windows installation guidance contains general measures such as disconnecting nonessential hardware, checking Device Manager and repairing system files, but those measures are not evidence of a code-specific solution here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • System-file commands: Reserve them for a separate, reproducible symptom or guidance that identifies corrupted system files. Running repair commands at random can produce new errors and make the original context harder to diagnose.
  • Device Manager changes: Do not uninstall or replace a network adapter merely because the code contains “IPSEC” or “IKE.” There is no evidence from this code alone that the physical adapter or its driver is defective.
  • Windows reinstallation: Consider it only after the responsible component has been identified, other recovery options have been evaluated and your data is backed up. The code does not establish that the Windows installation is damaged.
  • Security software changes: Do not disable protections or delete security policies to make the message disappear. A disappearing message is not proof that the underlying connection is safe or correctly configured.

There is also no source-backed reason to buy a replacement router, network adapter, VPN appliance or cleanup product for this code alone. A purchase becomes a separate decision only after an administrator or manufacturer identifies a failed component and specifies a compatible replacement. Until then, spending money cannot substitute for locating the originating application or event provider.

Which troubleshooting path fits my situation?

Use the location, recurrence and ownership of the event to choose the next action.

Where the code appeared What to collect Most appropriate next step
Windows Update screen or update history Update history entry, surrounding text and time Run the Windows Update troubleshooter for your Windows version, restart and check again
VPN or managed IPsec connection Profile name, complete event text, provider, event ID and timestamp Send the details to the network administrator or VPN provider for correlation with connection logs
Application dialog or application log Program name and version, reproduction steps and related log entries Use the application’s support channel and include the captured Windows event details
Single background event with no symptom Timestamp and neighboring events Monitor for recurrence rather than making disruptive system changes

When comparing these paths, ask three questions: where did the code appear, does it recur, and who controls the affected component? A one-time Event Viewer entry with no symptom calls for observation. A failed update calls for the Windows Update route. A managed tunnel calls for the network owner. A program dialog calls for that publisher. These categories guide support ownership; they do not prove a root cause.

When should I escalate the problem?

Escalate when the code recurs, prevents a required update or connection, or appears alongside authentication failures, repeated application crashes or other documented errors. Include the exact hexadecimal code but lead with the component that failed and the timeline; support teams can usually act on those details more effectively than on the code alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an organization manages the VPN, endpoint policy or certificates, only its administrator may have access to the relevant configuration and server logs. For a consumer application, contact that application’s publisher. If Windows Update is the only affected component, keep the troubleshooter results and update history entry for Microsoft support.

Before opening a ticket, assemble the copied event, screenshots if permitted, the Windows edition, application or VPN version, connection name, recurrence pattern and steps that trigger the message. State whether a restart, reconnect or update retry changed the symptom. Do not claim that a particular fix worked unless you observed that result on your device; support needs a factual timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0x00003635 a virus warning?

No. The official description identifies an RPC deletion in an IPsec/IKE context and does not classify the event as malware. Investigate unrelated security symptoms separately instead of inferring an infection from this hexadecimal value.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can I decode the code into the name of the failing VPN?

No. The symbolic name identifies the protocol family, not the particular VPN product, gateway or profile. The provider, event channel and connection name in the surrounding details are needed to identify the component.

Why can the code appear once without breaking anything?

A background session or tunnel can be removed through an RPC call while Windows is disconnecting, restarting or cleaning up. A solitary log entry with no user-visible failure may therefore require observation rather than immediate repair; recurrence and impact determine whether escalation is warranted.

Will changing the network adapter or VPN certificate fix it?

There is no basis in the code definition for choosing either change. Altering hardware or credentials before the administrator correlates the event can remove useful evidence and may create a separate connection problem.

Does the code mean Windows Update is broken?

No. The official name points to an IPsec/IKE context, and Microsoft’s entry does not classify it as an update error. If it appeared during an update, use the Windows Update troubleshooter and record any separate update error rather than assuming this code caused the failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I ignore the event if my VPN still connects?

Do not ignore a recurring or disruptive event, but a single entry with no connection symptom can be monitored. Preserve the timestamp and neighboring entries so an administrator can investigate if the code returns.

Can reinstalling the VPN client solve the problem?

Reinstallation is not established as a code-specific remedy. First capture the client logs and determine whether the provider or an organization controls the profile. Follow a documented reinstall instruction only when the application owner recommends it.

Is there a cost-free fix I should try first?

The appropriate first step is identification, not a purchase: capture the context, then use the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter if the event occurred during an update, or contact the application or VPN owner for the other contexts. No product or paid repair service is recommended by the official error definition.
