Error 0x000036B6 means an application attempted to activate a disabled activation context, according to Microsoft’s Win32 error-code reference. The code does not identify the application or explain why the failure happened, so there is no confirmed universal fix for Windows 11 or Windows 10. Start by recording which app shows the message, what you did immediately before it appeared, and the complete error text; those details are needed to choose a targeted repair.
What does error 0x000036B6 mean?
Microsoft lists the code as ERROR_SXS_ACTIVATION_CONTEXT_DISABLED and defines it this way: “The application attempted to activate a disabled activation context.” This describes an application activation-context failure; it does not name the application, identify the action that triggered the error, or establish the cause on your PC. Microsoft’s [MS-ERREF] Win32 Error Codes reference documents the meaning, not a repair procedure for a particular app.

It also does not tell you whether the failure is limited to one app or affects other software. Those details must be established from what happened on the affected computer.
What should I check before trying a fix?

- Record the application name. Note the exact name shown in the app window or error message. If you launched it from a shortcut, record which shortcut or location you used.
- Write down the action that triggered the message. For example, note whether it appeared while starting the app, opening a particular feature, or performing another action. Describe what you actually did rather than guessing at the cause.
- Copy the full surrounding text. Preserve the complete message, including any application name, file path, additional code, or other text displayed with
0x000036B6. A screenshot can help retain the wording if you cannot copy it. - Note whether the failure is repeatable. If it happens again during normal use, record the action and whether the wording changes. Do not repeatedly trigger an operation if doing so could risk unsaved work or other data.
- Keep the Windows version with your notes. Record whether the affected PC runs Windows 11 or Windows 10. The code definition applies to the error’s meaning; it does not supply separate repair steps for those operating systems.
How do I fix the error once I know which app is involved?
There is no source-backed, app-independent sequence of Windows settings or commands that can be called a fix for 0x000036B6. Use the captured app name, trigger, and full message to seek guidance for that specific application; the correct remedy depends on information the code itself does not provide.
If the error appears in one application
Keep the notes together and consult the application’s own support or documentation, providing the exact error text and the action that caused it. Ask for a remedy that matches the affected app and its failure context rather than applying a general Windows repair on the assumption that the code identifies a missing component.

If you cannot identify the application or trigger
Do not guess at a system-level cause based only on the hexadecimal code. Capture the message the next time it appears, including the app name and the action immediately before it; until those details are available, the underlying cause and a confirmed fix remain undetermined.
Which fixes should I avoid assuming will work?
The Microsoft definition does not establish a specific root cause, so a proposed fix should not be treated as confirmed merely because it sounds related to Windows components.

- Do not run generic repair commands as though Microsoft prescribed them for this exact code; the cited reference defines the error but gives no universal repair procedure.
