Error 0x008073C8 is not mapped to a specific Windows component in the official Microsoft error-code, activation, Windows Update, or AppX guidance reviewed for this article. The characters alone therefore do not tell you whether Windows Update, activation, Microsoft Store package deployment, Windows Setup, or another program failed. Do not “correct” it to a similar-looking code such as 0x80073C8. First copy the complete message and record exactly where it appeared; then follow the matching repair path below. The same code can require completely different troubleshooting depending on that context.
What does error 0x008073C8 mean?
At present, the exact string 0x008073C8 is not identified on the Microsoft pages covering Windows error codes, activation, Windows Update, or AppX deployment. That means there is no reliable, code-specific fix or explanation to apply blindly. The useful evidence is the surrounding text, the Windows component that displayed it, and the event logs generated at the time.

Microsoft’s activation guidance also notes that running troubleshooting can change the displayed code. Preserve the original wording in a screenshot or copied note before you retry. If the code is shown without a component name, Windows Help can search an unknown code, but the search result may still be inconclusive.
- Write down whether the message appeared in Windows Update, Settings activation, Microsoft Store or an app installer, Windows Setup, or a third-party program.
- Copy the entire message, including any package name, file path, error description, or “try again” text.
- Note whether the code changes after a restart or another attempt. A changing code usually means you are seeing a symptom from a different stage of the operation, not a stable identifier.
- Do not substitute 0x80073C8, 0x80073CF6, or another similar-looking value. Those are separate strings with separate documentation.
How should I prepare before troubleshooting?
Make a backup of documents and game saves before changing system files, uninstalling security software, or reinstalling Windows. Sign in with an administrator account for service, cache, and system-file repairs. If the computer is a gaming PC, close launchers and games first so that an update or package deployment is not holding files open.

How do I fix 0x008073C8 when it appears in Windows Update?
Start with the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates again. This is the least disruptive path and is appropriate when the message appears while downloading, installing, or rolling back a Windows update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun the Windows 11 troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any repair that Windows recommends, then restart the PC even if the troubleshooter says no change was required.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Microsoft also provides an automated Windows Update troubleshooter through the Get Help app. Use that route if the Settings troubleshooter is missing or does not complete.
Run the Windows 10 troubleshooter
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and apply its recommendations.
- Restart Windows, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Reset a damaged Windows Update cache
If the same failure returns after the troubleshooter, incomplete or damaged downloaded files may be involved. This procedure requires an administrator account and removes only the cached update files; Windows recreates the folder.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, right-click Windows Update and choose Stop. If the service refuses to stop, restart Windows and try again before proceeding.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents of that folder. Leave the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself in place. If a file is locked, confirm that Windows Update is stopped and close any update-related Settings window. - Return to
services.msc, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start. - Restart the computer and run Check for updates again.
Repair corrupted system files
System-file corruption can prevent the update engine from staging or committing an update. Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run these commands one at a time:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth- After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. - Restart Windows and retry the update.
DISM can take a while and may appear paused at a percentage. Do not close the elevated window while it is working. If either command reports that it could not repair all files, save the exact result; repeated retries without addressing the underlying storage or servicing problem are unlikely to help.

Check the conditions that can block an update
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time (Windows 11) or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time (Windows 10) and enable automatic time and time-zone selection.
- Test the connection without a VPN, proxy, captive portal, or metered setting. A firewall can block update endpoints; use its documented temporary troubleshooting mode rather than leaving protection disabled.
- Install pending driver updates from your PC or device manufacturer when the failure began after a hardware change.
- Use a clean boot if the update fails only when a background utility, overlay, RGB controller, game launcher, or security product is running. Re-enable services in groups after the test so you can identify a conflict.
What should I do if the code appears during Microsoft Store, MSIX, or AppX installation?
Use this branch only when the full message names Microsoft Store, an app package, MSIX, AppX, a package dependency, or app registration. The short code does not identify which package operation failed; the deployment logs do.
Inspect AppX deployment logs
- Press Windows key + R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - In Event Viewer, expand Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows.
- Open AppXDeployment-Server and review events created at the time of the failure.
- Also inspect AppxPackagingOM. Look for a package name, dependency, signature, path, registration, or access-denied message.
Retrieve recent deployment events with PowerShell
Open Windows PowerShell (Admin) and run:
Get-AppxLog
Read the newest entries first and copy the complete error text. A package identity or dependency named in the log is more actionable than 0x008073C8 alone. Use that name to determine whether the failing app is already installed, whether another version is present, or whether the package source is incomplete.
Retry safely
- Restart Windows before attempting the installation again; this releases files held by a previous deployment.
- Confirm that the system drive has free space and that the account has permission to install the app.
- If only one app fails, retry that app after signing back into Microsoft Store. If every Store or MSIX package fails, continue collecting deployment events instead of repeatedly clicking Install.
- Do not delete random folders under
C:Program FilesWindowsApps. They are protected package locations, and manual changes can create additional registration problems.
How do I troubleshoot 0x008073C8 during activation?
If the message is under Settings > System > Activation (Windows 11) or Settings > Update & Security > Activation (Windows 10), treat it as an activation case, not an update or Store failure. Confirm that the installed edition matches the license you own, such as Home versus Pro, and verify that the PC can reach Microsoft’s activation service.
- Open the Activation page and record the complete status text and any replacement code shown after selecting Troubleshoot.
- Run the activation troubleshooter while connected to the internet. Be aware that troubleshooting can change the displayed code.
- If hardware was recently replaced, use the option to indicate that hardware changed and sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license, when offered.
- For a product-key installation, enter the key again only if you have verified that it belongs to the installed Windows edition and region.
An unknown activation code still needs to be searched in Windows Help with the complete message. Do not infer that a Store or update cache reset will repair an activation entitlement.
What if Windows Setup or an upgrade stops with this code?
When the message appears in Windows Setup, during an in-place upgrade, or while booting installation media, first remove variables that commonly interfere with setup. The goal is to establish whether an external device, driver, security product, or background service is blocking the operation.
- Disconnect nonessential USB drives, docks, printers, capture cards, and other external hardware. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and installation media connected.
- Install current device drivers from the hardware manufacturer, especially storage, chipset, network, and graphics drivers.
- Temporarily remove third-party security software only when you can reinstall it from a trusted source and your normal protections remain available. Do not leave the PC unprotected longer than the test requires.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthandsfc /scannowfrom an elevated terminal, then restart. - Perform a clean boot and retry setup. If it succeeds, re-enable services and startup items in groups to identify the conflict.
Keep the complete Setup message and any log path shown by the installer. A setup failure that returns after external devices and background services are removed may require a repair install or a clean installation rather than another cache reset.

When should I use official Windows installation media?
Installation media is a fallback when normal update, package, activation, and setup repairs fail or when you have deliberately decided to reinstall Windows. It is not a guaranteed cure for 0x008073C8, and creating a USB does not by itself repair the component that produced the code.
Create media for Windows 11
- Use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page and its Media Creation Tool.
- Prepare a blank USB flash drive with enough capacity for the tool. The media-creation process deletes existing content on the selected drive, so copy files elsewhere first.
- Choose the language and edition that match the target installation, then let the tool create bootable media.
- For an in-place repair, start
setup.exefrom the running Windows installation and review the option to keep personal files and apps before continuing. - For a clean install, boot from the USB only after confirming backups, the correct edition, and any required license information. A clean install removes existing applications and can erase the Windows partition.
Understand the Windows 10 lifecycle
Microsoft’s documented Windows 10 lifecycle ended on October 14, 2025: free Windows 10 updates, technical support, and security fixes stopped on that date. Microsoft still documents the Windows 10 22H2 download and media tool, but installing Windows 10 now does not restore those ended services. If the hardware supports it, plan around Windows 11 or another supported operating system rather than treating old media as a long-term update solution.

| Path | Use it when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update troubleshooter | The code appears while downloading or installing Windows updates | Least disruptive; it may not identify an undocumented code |
| Update-cache and system-file repair | Update retries suggest damaged or incomplete files | More technical; administrator access and a restart are required |
AppX logs and Get-AppxLog |
The message appears during Store, MSIX, or AppX deployment | High diagnostic detail, but relevant only to app-package context |
| Official installation media | Repair fails or a reinstall/clean install is justified | Most disruptive; backup and license checks are required |
If you cannot identify the context, do not run every branch at random. Start by preserving the full message, then use the least disruptive diagnostic that matches the screen where it appeared.

- Replacing the code with a similar one: 0x008073C8 is not established as 0x80073C8. Searching the wrong value can send you to an unrelated AppX or Store procedure.
- Deleting more than the update cache: clear the contents of
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributiononly after stopping Windows Update; do not remove unrelated Windows folders. - Using AppX commands for an update failure:
Get-AppxLogis useful when package deployment is named in the message, not as a universal Windows repair command. - Skipping backups before reinstalling: a blank USB is for creating bootable media, while a clean installation can remove applications and data.
- Ignoring the date on Windows 10: a successful reinstall does not bring back free security updates that ended on October 14, 2025.
- Repeating retries without saving logs: every new attempt can change the displayed code or overwrite the most useful event timing. Capture the first complete message and the relevant Event Viewer entries.

Frequently asked questions
Can I safely ignore 0x008073C8 if Windows still starts?
If the code appeared during a failed update or app installation, Windows may continue to start while remaining unpatched or while the affected app is unavailable. Record the message and check Update history, Store downloads, or Activation status to see what operation failed before deciding that it is harmless.
Why did the error number change after I ran a troubleshooter?
Windows activation guidance warns that troubleshooting can change the displayed code as the system rechecks licensing or service state. The new value may describe a later failure stage, so keep both the original and replacement messages when asking for support.
Will clearing SoftwareDistribution delete my installed games?
That folder stores Windows Update’s working cache, not your normal game-library files. Clearing its contents after stopping the Windows Update service should make Windows download update data again, but it does not remove installed games from other folders or launchers.

Do I need a blank USB drive to run an in-place Windows repair?
No. An in-place repair can often be started from an ISO or downloaded setup files while Windows is running. A blank USB is needed only when you choose to create bootable installation media; the creation process erases the selected drive.
What information should I send to Microsoft or a technician?
Provide the Windows edition and version, the exact screen and full message, the time of the failure, whether the code changed, and the relevant Event Viewer entries or Get-AppxLog output. Include whether the issue began after a hardware, driver, security-software, or network change, but remove personal data and product keys from screenshots.
