What should you record before trying a fix?
Write down the complete evidence while the message is visible. This prevents a partial code from sending you down the wrong path.

How do I troubleshoot the code after a crash or unexpected restart?

1. Disconnect recently added hardware
Shut down normally if possible and remove hardware added shortly before the problem began, such as a USB device, expansion card, dock, or external adapter. 2. Use Safe Mode when normal startup is difficult
Safe Mode loads a limited Windows environment so you can determine whether the failure depends on a normal-startup driver or service. From Windows, open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, choose Advanced startup, select Restart now, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Select the Safe Mode option after the restart. If Windows cannot reach Settings, interrupting startup repeatedly can open the Windows Recovery Environment, although the exact screen sequence can vary by device.
If the machine is stable in Safe Mode but not during a normal boot, concentrate on recently changed drivers, firmware, startup software, and attached hardware. Safe Mode is a diagnostic state, not a permanent repair.
3. Inspect Device Manager
Open Device Manager, expand the relevant categories, and look for a device marked with a warning symbol. Open Properties and record the device name, manufacturer, and status text on the General tab. Review recent driver changes and obtain driver or firmware guidance from the device manufacturer. Do not install a random driver package simply because its version number looks newer.
4. Install applicable Windows and component updates
After recording the evidence, check Windows Update and install updates that apply to your edition and hardware. Also check the device manufacturer for firmware or driver updates that match the exact model. Restart as requested and test the same action that previously caused the crash.
5. Check event details
Open Event Viewer and review entries created at the time of the restart or crash, noting the provider, event ID, timestamp, and any referenced device or driver. 6. Consider System Restore for a recurring failure
If the crashes began after a known software, driver, or configuration change and a restore point exists, System Restore can return system settings to an earlier state without choosing a replacement part. Use it only after recording your current evidence and understanding which applications or drivers may be affected. A restore point is not available on every system and does not establish why this particular code appeared.
7. Check storage and memory conditions
Microsoft’s general stop-code guidance suggests keeping about 10–15% of the system drive free, while noting that the exact requirement depends on system configuration. Treat that figure as general maintenance advice, not evidence that low disk space caused 0x0081AC29. Run the hardware and memory tests relevant to your PC and preserve their results if the crashes continue.
What if 0x0081AC29 is shown in Device Manager?
In Device Manager, the important evidence is the device entry and its status text, not the code in isolation.

What if a game or another application displays the code?
A dialog inside a game, launcher, installer, or utility may belong entirely to that product. The hexadecimal appearance does not make it a Windows stop code.
- Record the application name, version if shown, and the exact action that produced the dialog.
- Note whether the error occurs only with one account, one device, one game, or one type of operation.
- Check the application’s official help or support channel for the full message, not just the numeric string.
