What should I do before trying a repair?
Protect your data and preserve clues before making system changes. If Windows still starts, sign in normally and complete these checks:
- Copy recent documents, saved games, photos, and other irreplaceable files to an external disk or a trusted cloud location.

How do I run DISM and SFC on a working Windows 11 or 10 PC?
Microsoft’s first-line sequence is DISM followed by SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC relies on; SFC then checks protected operating-system files against that repaired store. Microsoft warns that missing or corrupted critical system files can make Windows malfunction.
Open an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Save work in other applications before starting. The commands can take several minutes and may appear to pause at one percentage.
Run DISM first
At the administrator prompt, enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthPress Enter and let the operation finish. The /Online switch targets the running Windows installation; /Cleanup-image checks its component store; and /Restorehealth attempts repair. Keep the PC powered and connected while it runs. If DISM reports that it completed successfully, continue to SFC even if the original message has disappeared.

Run System File Checker
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannowWait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC reports whether it found no integrity violations, found corrupt files and repaired them, or found files it could not repair. Restart Windows after a successful repair and repeat the action that originally produced 0x00821C49. A repair result is evidence about system-file integrity, not proof that a particular application or update was the original trigger.
What if DISM or SFC reports an error?
Do not close the window merely because progress appears stalled. Give the command time to finish, then copy the final message exactly. - Confirm that the system drive has enough free space for the update and its temporary files.
Refresh the Windows Update cache
If the troubleshooter does not clear the error, refresh the cache before repeating DISM and SFC. Open Services from Start, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. In File Explorer, open C:Windows and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution.old. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start. Windows will create a new cache. Restart the PC, run DISM and SFC in that order, and then check for updates again.
If a service refuses to stop, or the folder cannot be renamed, do not delete random files from the Windows directory. Restart and try the troubleshooter once more, or use the recovery options below.

How do I fix the error if Windows will not boot?
When the PC cannot reach the sign-in screen, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) instead of the desktop commands. WinRE can start automatically after repeated failed boots, or you can reach it from Windows installation or recovery media.
Enter Windows Recovery Environment
- Turn on the PC. If Windows fails to start several times, it should display Automatic Repair and then Advanced options.
- If that screen does not appear, start from Windows 11 or Windows 10 installation/recovery media and choose Repair your computer rather than installing Windows.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced options.
Run Startup Repair
- Choose Startup Repair.
- Select the Windows installation if prompted and enter the account password when requested.
- Allow the check to finish without powering off. The PC may restart more than once.
Microsoft lists damaged system files, corrupted boot configuration data, a damaged master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry errors among the startup problems Startup Repair can attempt to address. It is designed to preserve personal files, but it cannot repair every cause of a boot failure. If it reports that it could not repair the PC, return to Troubleshoot > Advanced options and use the timing of the failure to choose the next option.
What recovery options remain when the first repairs fail?
Use Microsoft’s recovery choices from least disruptive to most disruptive, and back up anything accessible before selecting an option that can remove applications or change Windows.
Reinstall the current Windows 11 version
On supported Windows 11 installations, Settings may offer a reinstall of the current version through the recovery area. In WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Start with the most recent quality update if the error began immediately after a monthly update. A feature-update rollback is a larger change and may be available only for a limited period after upgrading.

Use System Restore when a restore point exists
Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore. Choose a restore point dated before the error began. System Restore rolls back system settings, drivers, and installed programs associated with that point; it is not a substitute for a current file backup.
Reset this PC
Troubleshoot > Reset this PC offers a choice to keep personal files or remove everything. Keeping files still removes applications and resets many settings, so record license information and installers first. Removing everything is appropriate only after you have verified a separate backup and understand that recovery may be impossible afterward.
Use recovery or installation media
If the built-in environment is damaged, create or use Windows installation media from another working computer and select repair tools before considering a clean installation. Are the steps different on Windows 10 and Windows 11?
The core repair commands and WinRE Startup Repair process are the same on both versions. Settings labels differ: Windows 11 places the update troubleshooter under System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, while Windows 10 uses Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Recovery features such as a current-version reinstall can also vary by Windows 11 edition and update state, so follow the options actually shown on your PC.
Do not force a Windows 11-only recovery choice onto a Windows 10 installation. If an option is missing, use the corresponding WinRE tool, update removal, restore point, Reset this PC, or installation media path instead.

Stop and seek qualified help if the storage drive is making unusual noises, the PC powers off during repairs, BitLocker or device-encryption recovery keys are unavailable, or recovery tools repeatedly fail. Continuing to restart a failing drive can worsen data loss. A technician can make a sector-level backup or inspect hardware before reinstalling Windows.
