How do I repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC?
Use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool first, followed by System File Checker. Both commands must run in an elevated Command Prompt, and each can take time. Do not close the window merely because the percentage appears to pause.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for DISM to finish and report its result. Keep the computer connected to power and, when requested by Windows, to the internet.
- In the same elevated window, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after the command completes.
- Retry Windows Update or the upgrade.
DISM repairs the Windows component image that supplies system files; SFC checks protected files against that repaired image.
