Shut down the computer and unplug external drives, printers, scanners, docks, card readers, and other USB devices that are not required to install Windows. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the installation media if one is required. Reconnect devices after setup succeeds, one at a time, so a newly exposed failure is easier to identify.
2. Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand each category and look for a yellow exclamation mark.
- Right-click the affected device, choose Update driver or Uninstall device only when you know the device can be re-detected, and restart.
If a device is essential to the installation, obtain its current driver from the hardware manufacturer before removing it. Do not guess at a replacement driver.
3. Temporarily remove third-party security software only when prepared

Because the system volume is in use, Windows normally asks to schedule the check for the next restart. Type Y, restart, and allow the scan to finish. It checks and repairs file-system errors; it does not repair every failing drive or recover inaccessible data. Stop and seek a separate storage diagnosis if it reports drive failure, unreadable sectors, or inaccessible files.
5. Perform a clean restart
A clean restart starts Windows with a minimal set of startup programs and services, helping identify a startup conflict during setup. Use msconfig to hide Microsoft services before disabling non-Microsoft entries, and restore the original startup configuration after testing. If the installation succeeds only in this state, re-enable items in groups to locate the conflict.
6. Repair the Windows image
From an elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for the operation to reach completion before closing the window, then restart and retry the upgrade. DISM repairs the running Windows component store; it is not proof that the unknown code has a single component-store cause.

1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run. This removes cached update downloads; it does not remove your installed applications or personal documents.

3. Correct the clock
Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone settings, then select Sync now when available. Retry the update after the displayed time is correct.
4. Update third-party device drivers
Install current drivers from the device manufacturer, particularly for storage, chipset, network, and graphics hardware. Avoid installing a driver merely because its version number is newer; confirm that it matches your exact model and Windows edition.

Run chkdsk /f C: in an elevated Command Prompt and restart if prompted. After Windows starts, run these commands in order:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
DISM repairs the Windows image that SFC uses as a source. SFC checks protected system files. Allow each command to finish; if either reports a different error, record that message and troubleshoot it separately rather than treating it as a translation of 0x0089E53E.
What should I do if 0x0089E53E appears during Windows activation?
Activation errors need a different path from update or installation failures.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Activation. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

How should I handle a crash or stop-code screen showing 0x0089E53E?

Is a clean installation of Windows the best first fix?
