How do I fix 0x008ADE2C when it appears during Windows Update?

How do I reset the Windows Update cache safely?

services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services console, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. Leave the console open.
- Open File Explorer and browse to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is locked, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and retry after closing programs that may be using it. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Open Settings > Windows Update (or the Windows 10 equivalent) and select Check for updates.
While troubleshooting, open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time zone, select Sync now when available, and retry the update. An incorrect clock can interfere with update validation.
What if 0x008ADE2C appears during a Windows upgrade or installation?

chkdsk /f C:. - If Windows says the volume is in use, type
Yto schedule the check at the next restart, then restart and allow it to finish.
Do not interrupt a scheduled disk check. If it reports recurring errors, back up important files and investigate the drive’s health before attempting another major upgrade.

Repair the Windows image
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for DISM to complete before closing the window. A repair can take time and may appear paused at one percentage for several minutes.
How do I repair Windows system files after an update failure?
For persistent update problems, Microsoft instructs users to run DISM first and System File Checker second. The order matters because SFC can use the repaired component store supplied by DISM.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
