Capture the context before changing anything
- Take a screenshot and copy the full message, including a program name, file name, or second error code.
- Record whether it appeared during startup, Windows Update, a game launch, an application installation, activation, shutdown, or a security scan.

Windows 10

- On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update and select Run.
- On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select Windows Update, then Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any suggested repair, restart, and attempt the same update again.
If the code appears in a game launcher, an installer, or another application while Windows Update itself works, this troubleshooter is unlikely to address the emitting program. Use the application-specific branch instead.
Can DISM and SFC repair this error?
They can repair Windows component-store corruption or missing and damaged protected files, but they cannot be promised as a cure for an application-specific code. Run DISM first, then SFC, from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type

Remove a recent device
Shut down completely and disconnect a newly added USB device, expansion card, dock, printer, or external drive if the computer can operate without it. If the system becomes stable, install the device again only after obtaining its current Windows 11 or Windows 10 driver from the manufacturer.
