Install pending Windows and hardware-driver updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install available updates. Restart as requested, then check again until Windows reports that no further updates are ready. In Device Manager, look for hardware with a warning icon and use the device’s Update driver or Uninstall device options when the symptom points to that hardware.
Disconnect nonessential hardware

How do I repair disk and system-file problems?
Run these commands from an elevated Command Prompt when the symptoms suggest disk errors, damaged Windows components, failed updates, or unexplained system crashes. Save work first and allow each command to finish.
Check the file system with CHKDSK
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - Enter:
chkdsk /f C:The /f option requests repairs. Windows may schedule the check for the next restart if the system volume is in use; accept that prompt only when you can restart and wait for the scan. Administrator permissions are required.
Repair the Windows image and protected files
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth- When DISM completes, run:
SFC.exe /Scannow- Restart Windows and retry the operation that produced the error.
Run DISM before SFC in this sequence. Record whether either command reports repairs, corruption it could not fix, or a clean result; that information helps support staff decide the next branch.
Should I reset Windows Update components?

Windows key + R, typemsconfig, and press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled startup items.
- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Retry the original operation. If the code disappears, return to System Configuration and Task Manager, re-enable services and startup items in groups, and restart between tests. The group that brings the error back contains the likely conflict.
- Restore normal startup after testing by reversing the changes.
Do not disable Microsoft services indiscriminately; the Hide all Microsoft services option is the safety check that keeps core Windows components available.

That lifecycle limitation does not explain 0x008EC84E, but it matters when deciding whether to continue troubleshooting an unsupported installation or plan a supported Windows 11 upgrade after checking hardware compatibility, backups, and application requirements.

Windows 11 users should still record the exact edition, version, and build because the same unlisted value can come from different components. Windows 10 users should record those details as well, especially when requesting help for an installation or activation problem.
