Open Device Manager and look for a yellow warning icon. For a flagged device, obtain the current driver from the device manufacturer rather than from an unverified download site. 3. Reset the Windows Update download cache
A damaged or incomplete cached package can make an update fail repeatedly. Reset the cache as follows:
- Press
Win+R, typeservices.msc, and select OK. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. Keep the window open.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the files and folders inside
SoftwareDistribution; do not delete the parent folder itself. These are cached update downloads and history data, not your personal documents. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update (or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10), and select Check for updates.
If Windows refuses to stop the service, close Settings and any installer windows, restart, and try the service procedure again. Do not remove files outside the SoftwareDistribution folder.
4. Synchronize date, time, and time zone
Incorrect clock settings can disrupt update validation and downloads. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time on Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time on Windows 10. Turn on automatic time and automatic time-zone settings, then use Sync now if that control is available. Retry the update after the clock reports the correct time and zone.

5. Repair the Windows image and system files
Use an elevated Command Prompt—administrator permissions are required. Save work first, because the checks can take time and should not be interrupted.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to finish. Do not close the window even if progress appears to pause. - When DISM completes, run
sfc /scannow. - Wait until System File Checker reaches 100 percent verification. Follow any instruction to restart Windows.
- After restarting, run Windows Update again and note whether the original message returns.
DISM repairs the Windows component image that supplies system files; SFC then checks protected files against that repaired image. Running SFC first can leave it without a usable source, which is why Microsoft’s sequence places DISM before SFC. If either command reports an error, record the exact wording rather than repeatedly rerunning it; that result is useful evidence for support.
6. Retry once and record the result
After the cache reset and the DISM/SFC sequence, restart the computer and attempt the same update or installation once. Note the update name, the time of failure, and whether the code is identical. A changed code or a new package name indicates that the original blocker may have been removed and that the remaining failure needs to be matched to the new message.

Restart Windows, then use the application’s own repair or reinstall option only if the message consistently appears when that program starts. If the dialog names a DLL, package, or runtime, preserve that exact name for the application developer or Microsoft support; substituting a similarly named file from the internet can make the problem worse.

Open Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10 and capture the full activation status. Keep the edition and build from winver, plus the wording of the activation message. - Whether restarting, the troubleshooter, cache reset, DISM, or SFC changed the behavior, including each command’s final result.
- Relevant CBS or Windows Update log entries requested by support. Copy the surrounding entries that show the failure, not only the hexadecimal value.
Do not post product keys, account passwords, or personal files with a log. If a support technician asks for a log package, use the collection method they specify so that timestamps and component names remain intact.

Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on that date. The troubleshooting steps above can still repair a Windows 10 installation, but a failure may also reflect the operating system’s unsupported status or the absence of a newer package; check the edition and support options shown by Microsoft before assuming another update will be offered.
