Error 0x00905B4A has no verified, code-specific definition in Microsoft’s published Windows Update or installation references. Treat it as a symptom, not a diagnosis: the correct fix depends on whether it appears during Windows Update, setup, sign-in, startup, or inside one application. First record the complete message and context. Then follow the matching workflow below, beginning with Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter for update failures, cache and system-file repair for persistent update problems, and Startup Repair or Bootrec only when Windows cannot boot.
What does error 0x00905B4A mean?
At present, Microsoft does not publish an authoritative explanation that maps 0x00905B4A to one cause. Searches of Microsoft’s Windows Update and Windows installation error references do not identify this exact value. A code copied from a game launcher, security product, installer, or a third-party log may also belong to that application rather than to Windows itself.

The hexadecimal text is not dangerous by itself and does not prove that your PC has malware. It is simply a diagnostic value displayed by some component. Do not download an alleged “0x00905B4A fixer” or delete random system files because a web page assigns an unverified meaning to the number.
What should I record before changing anything?
Capture enough information to identify the failing component. The same number can require entirely different recovery steps depending on the trigger.

Which fix fits the symptom?
Use the trigger and the recovery environment to choose a proportionate action. A cache reset is reversible; reinstalling Windows is not a first-line response.

How do I fix 0x00905B4A when it appears in Windows Update?
Start with Microsoft’s automated troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates again. Only move to cache and system-file repairs if the update path still fails.
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. Microsoft may also direct Windows 11 users to the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- Apply the suggested repair, restart the PC, and return to Settings > Windows Update to select Check for updates.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run the troubleshooter. Labels can vary slightly by build; choose the Windows Update troubleshooter rather than a printer, network, or Store troubleshooter.
2. Check time, restart state, and network basics
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time in Windows 11, or Settings > Time & Language > Date & time in Windows 10. Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically where available, then select Sync now.
- Restart rather than choosing Shut down and immediately powering on. A restart completes pending servicing operations.
- If you use a metered connection, proxy, or corporate update server, test on a normal connection or ask the administrator whether policy is blocking the update.
3. Reset the Windows Update cache
Microsoft’s update guidance uses the C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution folder as a cache-reset point. Renaming it preserves the old folder until Windows creates a fresh one and is easier to reverse than permanent deletion.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run these commands one at a time:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
rename C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
net start bits
net start wuauserv
- Restart Windows and try Windows Update again. If the rename says the folder is in use, close Settings, wait a minute, restart, and repeat from an elevated prompt.
- After a successful update, you can remove
SoftwareDistribution.oldin File Explorer to recover space. Do not delete it while the Windows Update service is running.
If a managed work PC recreates the error, update policies or an internal update server may be responsible; contact the administrator instead of repeatedly clearing the cache.
How do I repair Windows files with DISM and SFC?
Use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) command first, then System File Checker (SFC). DISM repairs the Windows image and component store that SFC relies on; SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store.
- Save work and connect to the internet if possible.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Allow the operation to reach 100%; it can appear paused for several minutes. When it reports completion, run:

What should I do if the error appears during Windows installation or upgrade?
Installation failures often come from a device, driver, disk, security program, or startup service rather than from the displayed hexadecimal value. Work through Microsoft’s upgrade precautions before attempting another upgrade.
Disconnect and inspect hardware
- Shut down and unplug nonessential USB drives, hubs, printers, cameras, and external storage. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and the installation media connected.
- Open Device Manager and look for yellow warning icons. Update, disable, or remove the affected device only when you know which hardware it represents; do not uninstall an unknown system device at random.
- Check available system-drive space and back up personal files before an in-place upgrade.
Remove conflicts temporarily
Third-party security software, encryption filters, virtualization drivers, and overlay utilities can interfere with setup. Follow the vendor’s documented uninstall process, restart, and retry; re-enable protection after Windows is stable. A clean boot can isolate a startup service:
- Press
Win+R, entermsconfig, and press Enter. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all.
- On Startup, open Task Manager and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and retry setup. When finished testing, return to
msconfigand choose Normal startup so normal services load again.
Use the drive-checking tool only after backing up data. In an elevated Command Prompt, chkdsk C: /scan performs an online scan; if it reports a problem, schedule the repair it recommends and allow the restart. A failing drive should be replaced rather than repeatedly repaired.
How do I troubleshoot the code in one application or game?
If Windows Update and other programs work, treat the event as application-specific. Do not apply boot-repair commands to a single crashing game.
- Open the application’s own log or crash-report folder and record the faulting module and exact time. Compare it with Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
- Install the application’s pending update from its official publisher, then restart.
- Use the app’s built-in Repair or Verify files option when available. If there is no repair option, uninstall, restart, and reinstall from the publisher’s installer after backing up saves and settings.
- Temporarily test with overlays, capture tools, mods, and third-party plug-ins disabled. Restore them one at a time to identify a conflict.
- If several applications began failing after a driver or Windows change, roll back that specific change or use System Restore rather than repeatedly reinstalling every application.
What if 0x00905B4A appears at sign-in?
First determine whether the failure affects one user profile or the entire installation. If another administrator account can sign in, create a backup there and inspect recently installed startup software, shell extensions, and drivers. Safe Mode can help separate core Windows services from third-party software; choose Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now, then Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, and select Safe Mode.
If Safe Mode works, remove the most recent incompatible software or driver and restart normally. If no account can sign in, use System Restore from Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore when a restore point exists. Restore points do not replace a personal-file backup.
How do I fix the error when Windows will not boot?
Startup Repair and Bootrec belong to boot recovery, not routine Windows Update troubleshooting. Use them only when the machine cannot reach the desktop or repeatedly returns to recovery.

Run Startup Repair first
- Force Windows Recovery Environment by interrupting startup twice, or boot from Windows recovery or installation media.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Choose the Windows installation and let the repair complete. Disconnect nonessential USB devices while it runs.
Use Bootrec for advanced cases
From Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt, experienced users can run:
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
Drive letters in recovery mode can differ from those in normal Windows, and /fixboot may return “Access is denied” on some UEFI systems. Stop if you are unsure which partition contains Windows; an incorrect BCD change can make boot recovery harder. Microsoft’s documented Bootrec and BCD procedures should be followed for the exact firmware and partition layout.

A USB flash drive for Windows installation or recovery media is appropriate when the built-in recovery environment is missing, Startup Repair cannot run, or setup must be performed from outside the installed system. Use another working PC to create official Windows media, boot the affected PC from it, and choose Repair your computer before considering installation.
An in-place repair installation can preserve personal files and applications when Windows still starts; a clean installation removes applications and can erase the system partition. Back up files and confirm the edition and activation status before either operation. Do not treat the USB drive as a diagnostic device: it provides recovery and installation tools, not a guaranteed explanation for 0x00905B4A.
Does Windows 10 support affect this error?
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That lifecycle change does not identify the hexadecimal code, but it limits the long-term repair options for a Windows 10 PC. If the hardware supports it, plan a supported move to Windows 11; otherwise weigh the security and application-compatibility consequences of remaining on an unsupported installation.
How do I confirm that the repair worked?
- Repeat the action that originally produced the code: check for updates, run setup, launch the application, sign in, or reboot.
- Check Event Viewer at the same time and confirm that the original source and faulting module no longer generate errors.
- Re-enable disabled services, startup items, security software, and peripherals one at a time after a clean-boot test.
- Keep the original error text and repair commands in your notes. If the code returns, the trigger and the new event details are more valuable than the number alone.

Can this code damage my files by itself?
No. The text is an error value, not a command that executes when displayed. Data loss risk comes from actions such as an interrupted upgrade, disk failure, or an incorrectly chosen clean installation, so back up files before escalation.
Should I keep deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder whenever updates fail?
No. Repeated cache resets can hide a policy, driver, disk, or servicing-stack problem. If the folder reset works only temporarily, preserve the event details and investigate the update history or managed-device policy instead.
Will Startup Repair fix a failed Windows Update?
Usually it is the wrong tool. Startup Repair targets boot files and startup configuration; use the Windows Update troubleshooter, cache reset, and DISM/SFC for an update failure unless the update has left the computer unable to start.
