Error 0x00908240 is not defined in the Microsoft Windows Update, Windows upgrade and installation, or Win32 system-code references checked for this guide. That means the hexadecimal value alone cannot identify a cause or a safe universal fix. The first step is to record exactly where it appeared, what you were doing, and the complete message around the code.

Once you know the source, use the matching path below: the Windows Update troubleshooter for update failures, Microsoft’s cache-reset sequence when update data may be damaged, DISM followed by System File Checker for suspected Windows corruption, and the relevant Microsoft or hardware-support procedure for setup, activation, Device Manager, or third-party application errors.

What does error 0x00908240 mean?

Microsoft’s published Windows Update, Windows upgrade and installation, and Win32 code tables do not define 0x00908240. It may therefore be an undocumented value emitted by a particular Windows component, setup phase, driver, service, or application rather than a standard code with one established meaning.

Do not infer that Windows itself is damaged, that an update is the cause, or that the computer is infected from the number alone. Windows Update, Windows Setup, Activation, Device Manager, and third-party programs expose different diagnostics. The same-looking hexadecimal string can require entirely different troubleshooting.

Record the context before changing anything

  • Copy the complete error text, including any title, secondary code, file name, or suggested action.
  • Note the screen or application that displayed it and the action immediately before it appeared.
  • Write down whether the event occurred during Windows Update, a Windows 11 or 10 upgrade, installation, activation, device setup, or another program.
  • Record the Windows edition and build shown in Settings > System > About (Windows 11) or Settings > System > About (Windows 10).
  • For an update or setup failure, note the update identifier or setup phase and the time of the failure.

Keep this information even if a later repair appears to work. If the code returns, the full message and source component are more useful to support staff than 0x00908240 by itself.

Which repair should I try first?

Choose the row that matches the place where you saw the code. Do not apply a Windows Update procedure to an unrelated application or hardware error simply because the number is identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Where the code appears First action What to preserve if it fails
Windows Update Run the Windows Update troubleshooter for your Windows version, restart, and retry. Complete message, update identifier, Windows build, and timestamp.
Windows upgrade or installation Follow Microsoft’s upgrade guidance and use a clean restart when background software may interfere. Setup phase and every additional error code.
Activation Open the Activation settings page and run its available troubleshooter. Activation status and the full wording shown there.
Device Manager Open the affected device’s Properties page and follow the resolution listed by Windows. Device name, status text, and hardware vendor details.
Another application Use that application’s own repair, update, logging, or support process. Application name and version, crash or event log, and the action that triggered the error.

How do I fix 0x00908240 when it appears in Windows Update?

Start with the built-in troubleshooter, then retry the original update. If the failure returns and the update cache may be corrupt, reset the cache and then repair Windows system files.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Windows Update and select Run. Windows may launch the automated troubleshooter through Get Help instead; complete the prompts it provides.
  3. Apply any recommended action, restart the computer, and retry the exact update that produced 0x00908240.

Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  2. Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
  3. Allow the checks to finish, restart Windows, and retry the failed update.

The troubleshooter is the lowest-risk first step because it uses Windows’ own diagnostics. If it reports that no problem was found, that does not explain an undocumented code; continue using the source-specific steps rather than repeatedly running the same check.

Reset the Windows Update cache

A damaged download or catalog in the update cache can prevent an update from completing. Microsoft’s documented sequence is to stop the Windows Update service, clear the contents of its cache directory, and start the service again.

  1. Save open work and sign in with an account that can approve administrator actions.
  2. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
  4. Open File Explorer and go to C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution.
  5. Delete the contents of that folder, not the SoftwareDistribution folder itself. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and close any window using that directory.
  6. Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
  7. Restart Windows and retry the original update. Preserve the complete message if 0x00908240 appears again.

Clearing this directory removes cached update data; Windows can download fresh copies. It is not a code-specific cure and does not identify whether the original problem was caused by networking, policy, an update package, or another component.

How do I repair Windows files associated with the error?

If Windows components are corrupted, Microsoft documents repairing the Windows image with Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM), followed by System File Checker (SFC). Run both commands from an elevated Command Prompt; administrator permission is required.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. Enter the following command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to complete. Do not close the window or restart while it is working.
  2. After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Let SFC reach 100 percent, note the result it reports, restart Windows, and retry the operation that produced the code.

DISM repairs the online Windows image; SFC checks protected system files against that image. The commands may report that no corruption was found, that corruption was repaired, or that some files could not be repaired. Keep the exact result for escalation instead of treating a successful command completion as proof that 0x00908240 has a single known cause.

Microsoft cautions that command-line procedures are intended for people comfortable working in an elevated command prompt. If you are unsure which window is elevated or what a result means, stop after recording the output and use Microsoft support guidance.

What if 0x00908240 appears during a Windows upgrade or installation?

Upgrade and installation failures belong to a different diagnostic family from routine Windows Update errors. Apply Microsoft’s upgrade guidance for the edition and setup method you are using, and consider a clean restart if background software may be interfering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the setup context to narrow the failure

  • Record whether the failure occurred while checking for updates, downloading, preparing, installing, or restarting.
  • Write down any second code, file name, or rollback message. The undocumented value 0x00908240 is not enough to identify the failed setup stage.
  • After a clean restart, retry the same upgrade once and compare the setup phase and wording with the first attempt.

If the upgrade still fails, escalate to Microsoft support with the full message, Windows edition and build, setup phase, time of failure, and any additional code. A clean restart can remove interference from background software, but it cannot establish that the hexadecimal value itself is a Windows setup constant.

How do I handle the code in Activation?

When the number is displayed in Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11, or the Activation page under Update & Security on Windows 10, use the troubleshooter offered on that page for the applicable activation problem.

  1. Open the Activation settings page and read the complete status message.
  2. Select the available Troubleshoot option and follow its prompts.
  3. Record whether Windows reports a digital license, a product-key issue, or another activation condition.
  4. If the troubleshooter cannot resolve it, provide Microsoft support with the exact status text and the device’s Windows edition and build.

Do not substitute DISM, cache deletion, or a driver procedure for an activation diagnosis unless another symptom independently points to damaged system files.

What should I do if Device Manager shows 0x00908240?

Device Manager errors are tied to a particular device, so identify that device before changing drivers or hardware settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager and locate the entry marked with the warning symbol.
  2. Right-click the device, choose Properties, and read the status shown on the device’s details page.
  3. Record the device name, manufacturer, hardware identifiers, and the complete status text.
  4. Follow the resolution Windows lists. If Windows does not provide a matching resolution, use the hardware vendor’s support channel for the exact model and Windows version.

Do not assume a Device Manager code can be fixed by resetting the Windows Update cache. A device-specific failure may involve a driver, firmware, connection, or hardware condition that Windows Update troubleshooting does not address.

What if a third-party application displays the code?

An application can use hexadecimal values that are not part of Microsoft’s public system-code tables. Use the application’s own update, repair, logging, and support tools, and avoid deleting Windows folders unless the application’s documentation specifically requires it.

Collect useful application evidence

  • Application name, version, and installation source.
  • The exact action that triggered the message and whether it happens every time.
  • Complete dialog text, crash details, and any timestamped application or Windows event log entry.
  • Whether the problem remains after restarting Windows and retrying the same action.

Give that evidence to the application developer or publisher. The absence of a match in Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool does not prove that the application is defective; it only means the value is not decoded there as a known Microsoft constant.

Can Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool identify 0x00908240?

Microsoft describes the Error Lookup Tool, also known as “ERR,” as “a command-line tool to decode many Microsoft error codes.” The download page lists version 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024.

  1. Obtain the tool from Microsoft’s Download Center and use the version appropriate for your system.
  2. Run it from a Command Prompt with the hexadecimal value supplied by the error message.
  3. Compare any returned text with the component that displayed the error; a generic match is not proof that it explains your specific failure.

If ERR returns no definition for 0x00908240, treat that as confirmation that the public tool does not decode the value, not as evidence of a particular cause. Keep the source application, full message, Windows build, update or setup identifier, and timestamp for support.

Should I back up files before running these repairs?

Back up important files before deleting update-cache contents or running repair commands. A USB flash drive is optional backup media; it is not a fix for 0x00908240.

  • Copy documents, saved games, photos, and other irreplaceable files to a separate drive or another backup destination.
  • Close applications before stopping services or restarting Windows.
  • Keep the original error message and command results in a text file so you can restore the troubleshooting history after a reboot.

Built-in troubleshooters and restarts are generally reversible. Cache deletion and elevated command-line repairs change system state, so do not skip the backup simply because the code appeared only once.

When should I stop troubleshooting and contact support?

Escalate when the code persists after the source-specific procedure, when Windows cannot complete an upgrade, or when the message points to activation or hardware that Windows does not resolve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Include the complete error wording rather than only 0x00908240.
  • State where it appeared: Windows Update, Setup, Activation, Device Manager, or a named application.
  • Provide Windows edition, build, update identifier or setup phase, and the time of failure.
  • Attach the DISM and SFC results if you ran them, plus any troubleshooter result.
  • For Device Manager, include the device model and status text; for an application, include its version and relevant log entry.

Microsoft support can use that evidence to select the correct diagnostic family. Without it, an advisor cannot reliably distinguish an update-cache problem from setup, activation, driver, policy, network, or application behavior.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, temporary and cache cleanup, and settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary because no tool repairs every crash.
