- The complete error sentence, including punctuation and any second code.
- Whether the message appeared in Windows Update, Device Manager, a game, an installer, or another program.
- The application name and version, or the device name and model.

How do I fix 0x009154B7 in Device Manager?
If Device Manager shows the value, identify the affected device first. How do I troubleshoot 0x009154B7 during Windows Update?

1. Back up personal files
Copy important documents, saved game files, photos, and other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or trusted cloud location. A backup protects your data if later servicing work or a failed update leaves Windows unable to start.

- On Windows 11, open Settings and go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Run Windows Update. Microsoft may also present the same guided workflow in the Get Help app.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any recommended correction, restart when requested, and try Windows Update again. Keep the troubleshooter’s result or take a screenshot if it reports a separate code.
3. Check the conditions Windows Update requires
- Confirm that the computer has a working internet connection. If possible, test another network rather than repeatedly retrying a failing connection.
- Make sure you are using an administrator account or have administrator credentials available when Windows requests them.
- Disconnect unnecessary external hardware such as USB storage, docks, printers, and other accessories before retrying. Leave connected only the devices needed to operate the computer.
- Restart Windows after pending updates or a troubleshooter run, then check for updates again.
4. Clear the update cache only in this Windows Update context
Do not delete the SoftwareDistribution folder because the same number appeared in an unrelated application. If Windows Update’s own troubleshooting points to a damaged cache, you can rebuild it with an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Stop the update services by entering
net stop wuauservand thennet stop bits. Confirm that each command reports the service has stopped. - In File Explorer, open
C:Windowsand renameSoftwareDistributionto something such asSoftwareDistribution.old. Renaming preserves the old folder if you need to inspect it or undo the change. - Return to the elevated Command Prompt and enter
net start wuauserv, followed bynet start bits. - Restart the computer and run Windows Update again. Windows will create a new SoftwareDistribution folder; the first scan can take longer because update metadata is rebuilt.
If a command reports that a service is not running, note the message and continue only when the folder can be renamed safely. If access is denied, check that Command Prompt is elevated and that no security or management policy is preventing the change. Do not remove other folders under C:Windows.
