Error 0x0093C5C6 has no documented Microsoft component or standard HRESULT meaning, so there is no single confirmed cure. On Windows 10 and 11, start with a backup, record exactly when the message appears, then repair the Windows component store with DISM and protected system files with System File Checker. Restart and test again. If the code persists, isolate drivers, USB hardware, startup services, disk errors, Windows servicing, and finally the recovery options that can reinstall Windows. The code is not, by itself, proof of malware.
What does error 0x0093C5C6 mean?
Microsoft does not assign 0x0093C5C6 to a named Windows component, documented HRESULT, or published failure class. That means the hexadecimal value alone cannot identify the damaged file, driver, application, or setting on your computer. A page that lists causes such as invalid system entries, a failed installation or removal, an improper shutdown, or deleted system files is describing possibilities rather than a diagnosis that applies to every machine.

Treat the message as a symptom. The most useful clue is its timing: a code shown during startup points toward system or service loading; one shown when a particular game or application opens may be application-specific; one that appears while installing an update points toward component servicing; and a code that follows a new peripheral or driver suggests a device conflict. Write down the exact wording, the program or action involved, and whether the problem began after an update, software change, power loss, or hardware change.
Is 0x0093C5C6 a virus?
The code itself is not evidence of a virus. Corrupted Windows files, an interrupted installer, a bad shutdown, a conflicting driver, or a failing disk can all produce unexplained errors. Continue to use your normal security software and investigate suspicious processes separately; the repair commands below restore Windows components but are not a substitute for malware protection.

What should I do before repairing Windows?
- Back up irreplaceable data. Copy documents, saved games, photos, and other personal files to a separate drive or trusted cloud storage. If Windows later requires recovery or a reinstall, a backup is your protection against data loss.
- Record the trigger. Note whether the message appears at sign-in, when launching one application, during Windows Update, after waking from sleep, or while connecting hardware. Capture a screenshot if the dialog may disappear.
- Keep the computer powered. Plug in a laptop and avoid forcing a shutdown while a repair command is running.
- Have an administrator account available. DISM, SFC, disk checking, driver changes, and clean-boot configuration require elevated permissions.
How do I run the safest first-line repair?
Run DISM first and SFC second from an elevated Command Prompt. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source; SFC then checks protected operating-system files and replaces corrupted copies when a known-good cached copy exists. Microsoft warns that missing or corrupted critical system files can make Windows malfunction.
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for confirmation.
- At the prompt, enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Leave the window open while DISM completes; the operation can take several minutes and may appear to pause. - When DISM finishes, run
sfc /scannow. Do not close the window before verification reaches 100 percent. - Restart Windows, then repeat the action that produced 0x0093C5C6.
DISM may obtain repair files through Windows Update. If the component store is damaged and Windows Update cannot supply matching files, Microsoft-supported repair media can provide an alternate source; the command will report an error rather than silently proving that the original code has a particular cause.

- If DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully and SFC reports no integrity violations, the protected files checked by SFC were not the problem at that moment. Continue with the isolation steps below if the code remains.
- If SFC says it found and repaired corrupted files, restart before testing. A repaired file may not be loaded until the next boot.
- If SFC says it found corruption but could not fix some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. Persistent failures point to a deeper component-store, disk, or servicing problem.
- If DISM cannot find source files, make sure Windows Update is functioning or use matching Windows installation media as a repair source. Do not use media from a different edition or architecture.
Could a driver or peripheral be causing the code?
Yes. A warning icon in Device Manager, a newly installed driver, or a recently attached dock, USB drive, printer, controller, or headset can make an otherwise healthy Windows installation fail at one operation. Disconnecting hardware and checking drivers is reversible and should come before a reset.
Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the failure, such as Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Network adapters, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Printers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or a device that appeared immediately before the error.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the status on the General tab. Record the driver date and version under Driver.
- If the issue began after a driver update, use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise, install a current driver supplied by the device or computer manufacturer, or uninstall the recently changed device and restart so Windows can redetect it.
Do not remove several unrelated drivers at once; changing one device and testing makes the result identifiable. If Windows cannot boot normally after a driver change, use Safe Mode or Windows Recovery to undo that single change.
Test without external hardware
Shut down, disconnect unnecessary USB devices, hubs, docks, external drives, and card readers, and start Windows with only the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection required for the test. Retry the failing action. Reconnect devices one at a time until the error returns; the last device or its driver becomes the leading suspect, not proof of a hardware failure.
How can I tell whether a startup program or service is involved?
A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft startup items and services disabled. It is a diagnostic state, not a permanent configuration. If 0x0093C5C6 disappears in a clean boot, re-enable items in groups until the conflict is identified.

- Close Task Manager, select OK in System Configuration, and restart.
- Test the action that produced the code. If it works, restore services and startup items in small groups, restarting after each change, until the conflicting item is found.

Should I check the disk with CHKDSK?
Use a disk check when the error follows an abrupt power loss, unexplained file damage, repeated application crashes, or other signs of storage trouble. The documented command checks the Windows volume and fixes file-system errors, but it cannot repair every physical drive failure.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run
chkdsk /f C:. - If Windows says the volume is in use, type
Yto schedule the check for the next restart. - Restart and allow the scan to finish. Do not interrupt it unless the computer is genuinely unresponsive for an extended period.
Back up important files before scheduling a repair on a drive that may be failing. If CHKDSK reports recurring errors, the volume repeatedly becomes dirty, or Windows shows additional storage warnings, replace or professionally assess the drive rather than relying on repeated scans.
What if Windows Update or an installation triggered 0x0093C5C6?
Retry the update or installation only after DISM and SFC have completed and Windows has restarted. Temporarily remove the application or driver that was being installed, reboot, and install the latest version from its official publisher. Keep enough free storage for the update and disconnect nonessential peripherals during the retry.
Recommended Free Tools
If Windows Update repeatedly fails, open Settings > Windows Update, install any pending servicing updates, restart, and check again. DISM can use Windows Update or a matching repair source; a failure to obtain files is a source problem, not confirmation that 0x0093C5C6 has a fixed meaning.
What application-specific checks are useful?
If the code appears only when one game or program launches, repair Windows first, then treat the problem as application-specific. Install the application’s latest update, use its built-in Repair or Verify files option when available, and reinstall it only after backing up saves and settings. Check the application’s own crash or installation log for a module name; that name is more actionable than the hexadecimal code alone.
Test a different Windows account if practical. A clean account can reveal a damaged per-user setting, profile permission, or cache without changing the original account. If the application fails for every account while other programs work, its installation or a shared dependency is more likely than a general Windows failure.
When should I use Windows Recovery?
Use recovery tools when normal Windows repair does not restore startup or the failing operation, especially if the error appeared after a major update or configuration change. Choose the least destructive option that addresses the evidence.

- System Restore: returns system files, drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point while normally leaving personal documents unchanged. Applications and updates installed after that point may be removed.
- Startup Repair: targets boot-related problems when Windows cannot start normally. It is not a general repair for an application that fails after sign-in.
- Uninstall Updates: can remove a recently installed quality or feature update when the timing strongly implicates it.
- Reset this PC: reinstalls Windows and lets you choose whether to keep personal files, but applications and many settings are removed. Confirm backups and application license information first.
- Installation media: a Windows installation USB can provide recovery tools or a repair source when the local installation cannot supply files. Creating or using media does not guarantee a cure for this undocumented code.
To reach recovery, open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10, or use Windows Recovery Environment after failed starts. Menu names can vary by edition and update level. A clean installation is the last resort because it removes applications, settings, and potentially data; verify the backup and have installation credentials before proceeding.
Which repair should I try first?
| Option | Best use | Reversibility | Data impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| DISM then SFC | Suspected corrupted Windows components or protected files | High; diagnostic and repair commands | Normally leaves personal files and applications in place |
| Driver rollback or update | Warning icons, recent hardware or driver changes | High when one device is changed at a time | Normally limited to the device configuration |
| Peripheral disconnect | Error follows a USB device, dock, or external drive | Very high | None, provided external-drive data is safely stored |
| Clean boot | Startup-program or service conflict | High; settings can be restored | None, but background features are temporarily unavailable |
chkdsk /f C: |
File-system errors or abrupt shutdown symptoms | Moderate; it changes file-system metadata | Back up first if a drive may be failing |
| System Restore or update removal | Failure began after a specific system change | Moderate; later apps, drivers, or updates may be removed | Personal files normally remain, but verify before use |
| Reset or clean install | Built-in repair cannot restore operation | Low | Applications and settings are removed; a clean install can remove data |
What should I record if the error keeps returning?
Keep a short incident log with the date, trigger, exact dialog text, recent changes, command results, Device Manager status, and whether the problem occurs in a clean boot or another account. Note any file name, application module, or driver version shown alongside 0x0093C5C6. This information lets a support technician distinguish a system-wide fault from one program, device, or user profile without repeating destructive repairs.
Do not claim a successful fix merely because the dialog disappears once. Repeat the original action after a normal restart and again after reconnecting required hardware. If the code returns, stop escalating blindly: preserve your backups, the incident log, and relevant event details before attempting reset or reinstall.
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, adjust selected system settings, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder, and crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software, does not replace it, and results vary.
Frequently asked questions
Can 0x0093C5C6 damage my files?
The hexadecimal message does not itself damage data. File risk comes from the underlying event, such as a failing drive, interrupted write, forced shutdown, or a reset or reinstall, so preserve important files before intensive repairs.
Does Safe Mode prove that a driver is faulty?
No. Safe Mode loads a smaller set of drivers and services, so a disappearing error shows that something omitted in that mode may be involved. You still need controlled re-enabling or one-device-at-a-time testing to identify the cause.
Do I need an internet connection for DISM?
DISM can obtain repair files through Windows Update, so internet access may be required when the local component store lacks them. If Windows Update cannot provide a matching source, compatible installation media can supply the files instead.
Will resetting Windows always remove the code?
No. Resetting replaces much of the software environment, but a failing disk, incompatible peripheral, or application that is reinstalled afterward can recreate the same symptom. Treat reset as a recovery measure after backups and less destructive isolation.

Where can I find more clues than the error dialog?
Check Event Viewer around the timestamp of the failure and the affected application’s own logs. Look for a named executable, DLL, service, driver, or update identifier; those details can identify the failing layer even though 0x0093C5C6 itself is undocumented.
