Error 0x0093EFA2 does not identify one confirmed Windows component, driver, or game file. The available vendor description treats it as a broad system or application failure that can appear after an installation, shutdown, file deletion, registry problem, or malware incident. Your surrounding symptom—boot failure, Windows Update, or one application—is therefore more useful than the hexadecimal label. Start by backing up important files, then run Microsoft’s elevated DISM repair followed by System File Checker (SFC). If Windows will not start, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and Startup Repair. Escalate to update removal, System Restore, a repair reinstall, Reset this PC, or installation media only when the less disruptive option does not address the timing of the error.

What does error 0x0093EFA2 mean?

No Microsoft component mapping, dedicated Knowledge Base article, or single documented root cause is available for 0x0093EFA2. A hexadecimal code by itself cannot tell you whether the failure belongs to Windows, a game, another application, or a damaged dependency. Treat the code as a symptom marker and record the complete message around it.

The same code can accompany very different situations. It may appear while the PC is booting, during Windows Update, when launching one game, after installing or removing software, or after an unexpected shutdown. A vendor page for this exact code lists broad possibilities—including registry damage, an incomplete installation, malware, an improper shutdown, or a deleted file—but those possibilities do not establish which one affects your computer.

Capture the context before changing anything

  • Write down the exact wording, punctuation, and filename in the dialog, not just 0x0093EFA2.
  • Note whether it appears before sign-in, immediately after sign-in, during a Windows Update, or only when a particular game or program starts.
  • Record software, driver, update, or hardware changes made immediately before the first occurrence.
  • Open Event Viewer by pressing Win, typing Event Viewer, and selecting Windows Logs > Application or Windows Logs > System. Look for an error at the same time and save the event’s source, Event ID, and faulting module.

This context determines whether a system-file repair, a rollback, or an application-specific reinstall is the sensible next move. Do not begin by deleting registry entries or replacing random DLL files; the code does not identify a safe target for either action.

What should I do before trying a repair?

Protect your data and make the least invasive checks first. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can remove applications or files, so copy documents, saved games, photos, and any configuration you cannot recreate to Windows Backup or another trusted backup destination.

Check basic conditions

  • Keep the computer connected to AC power, especially during servicing or recovery.
  • Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, and external drives while testing a startup problem. Leave the keyboard, mouse, and display connected.
  • Confirm that the system drive has free space. Component servicing and a feature repair need working space for temporary files.
  • If the message is limited to one game, check whether other programs launch normally. A single-program failure points toward that program’s files or dependencies rather than proof of global Windows corruption.

Understand the Windows 10 support context

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A repair can restore a damaged installation, but it does not extend security or update support beyond that date. If this PC can run Windows 11, include a supported upgrade plan in your longer-term decision rather than treating repeated repairs as a substitute for a supported operating system.

How do I run DISM and SFC to repair Windows files?

Microsoft’s supported first pass is an elevated Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repair followed by System File Checker. Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “You should run DISM prior to running the System File Checker.” DISM repairs the component store and supplies the files SFC may need to replace protected system files.

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  2. At the administrator prompt, enter DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter.
  3. Wait for DISM to finish. It can take several minutes, and the percentage may pause. Do not close the console or power off the PC while it is servicing the image.
  4. When DISM reports completion, run sfc /scannow and press Enter.
  5. Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after the command completes, then try the action that originally produced 0x0093EFA2.

What the SFC result means

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. SFC found no corruption in the protected files it checked. The cause may be an application, update, profile, or another component outside that set.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart and test the original symptom. Record whether the error returns before making another change.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation. Retry the scan from Safe Mode, where fewer drivers and services are loaded.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Review the Component-Based Servicing log (CBS.log) and identify the exact file and Windows build before attempting a manual replacement. Replacing a DLL with an arbitrary download can create a second problem.

Retry SFC in Safe Mode when required

From Windows, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now on Windows 11. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. You can also hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press the number for Safe Mode. Open an administrator Command Prompt there and run sfc /scannow again.

When Windows Update cannot provide DISM source files

DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows servicing. If it reports that source files cannot be found, Microsoft documents supplying a known-good repair source with /Source:<path> /LimitAccess. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build; using mismatched media can leave servicing incomplete. Do not guess a source path or copy files from another PC without confirming that match.

How do I fix 0x0093EFA2 when Windows will not boot?

Use WinRE’s Startup Repair before attempting a reset or reinstall. Microsoft describes it as “a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain system problems that might prevent Windows from starting.” It targets common boot files, the Boot Configuration Data (BCD), the master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. From a working Windows session, open Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery, then use Advanced startup. Holding Shift while choosing Power > Restart reaches the same menu.
  2. After the restart, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart.
  3. Choose the Windows account when prompted and enter its password. Let the diagnostic finish without interrupting power.

If the system drive is protected with BitLocker, WinRE may request the BitLocker recovery key. Retrieve that key from the place where your organization or Microsoft account stores it before starting recovery; without the key, encrypted data may remain inaccessible even when the boot repair itself is appropriate.

If Startup Repair reports that it could not fix the PC, return to Advanced options. Depending on what changed, the next least-disruptive choices are Uninstall Updates or System Restore.

Which recovery option fits the timing of the error?

Choose the action that matches when 0x0093EFA2 began and how much of Windows still works. Microsoft’s recovery guidance moves from targeted reversals toward options that reinstall more of the operating system.

Situation Action Effect on personal files and apps Important requirement or trade-off
The code started immediately after a Windows update WinRE or Settings: Uninstall Updates Microsoft says personal files and apps are not affected by this action Targets the recent update; it does not diagnose unrelated application failures
The code followed a recent software or settings change and Windows still starts System Restore Rolls back system files and settings but not personal files Requires a restore point from before the change; programs or drivers installed afterward may be removed
Windows works but remains unstable after repairs Use the least disruptive reinstall or repair option offered for the installed Windows version Preservation depends on the option selected; review the confirmation screen Back up first and keep power connected
Windows will not start and targeted recovery fails OEM recovery media or Windows installation media Some paths preserve data, while a clean installation removes the selected partitions and applications OEM media may include hardware-specific drivers and factory applications
Built-in recovery cannot resolve the installation Reset this PC or a reinstall from installation media Reset choices can remove applications and, depending on the selection, personal files Most disruptive route; verify backups and activation details before proceeding

Uninstall a recent update

In WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates, then select the available quality or feature update option. In a working installation, the equivalent recovery controls are under the Windows Update recovery pages. Restart and test before making another change. If the error remains after removing the update, reinstalling it repeatedly is not a diagnosis; continue with the next option that matches the timeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use System Restore

Open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore when Windows is usable, or select System Restore under WinRE’s Advanced options. Pick a restore point created before the first 0x0093EFA2 occurrence and review the affected programs list. The process changes system files, drivers, and settings while leaving personal documents in place, but it cannot restore files that were individually deleted.

Consider Reset this PC or a reinstall only after backup

Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC in Windows 11 (or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery in Windows 10) offers choices that can keep personal files or remove them. “Keep my files” still removes installed applications and resets settings; “Remove everything” is more destructive. Read each screen, disconnect external backup drives you do not want formatted, and confirm which Windows drive and data will be affected.

Do I need a bootable USB drive?

No. DISM and SFC run from an installed Windows session, and Startup Repair is already available in WinRE. A bootable USB is an optional recovery or installation path when Windows’ local recovery environment is unavailable or damaged, not a guaranteed cure for this hexadecimal code.

Create and use installation media

On another working PC, create official Windows installation media on a USB flash drive with enough capacity for the selected Windows release. Boot the affected PC from that drive using its firmware boot menu, choose the language and keyboard options, and select Repair your computer instead of installing immediately. This enters WinRE, where you can try Startup Repair, System Restore, or an administrator Command Prompt.

If you proceed to installation, verify the edition and architecture first. OEM recovery media can be preferable on a manufacturer system because it may contain hardware-specific drivers and factory applications. Installation media is also useful when the local recovery partition is missing, but a clean installation can remove applications and files, so confirm your backup before selecting it.

What should I do if the code appears only in one game or app?

First separate an application failure from a Windows-wide failure. If the desktop, Settings, and unrelated programs work, capture the application name and faulting module from Event Viewer, then use the application’s own repair or reinstall option. Do not assume that 0x0093EFA2 proves Windows needs a registry edit.

  • Restart once after DISM/SFC and test the application before changing several variables at once.
  • Use the app’s installed-program entry to choose Repair or Modify when offered; otherwise uninstall and reinstall from the publisher’s trusted installer.
  • Check whether the error began after an application update, graphics or audio driver change, or a permissions change, and roll back only the change tied to the timing.
  • Keep the complete error text when asking the application publisher or a support forum for help. Include the Windows edition, build, application version, Event Viewer source and Event ID, and whether a new Windows profile reproduces the failure.

If the same code appears across multiple applications or during boot, return to the system-level flow: backup, DISM, SFC, and WinRE recovery.

What common mistakes make this error harder to fix?

  • Running SFC first: DISM should precede SFC so the component store can provide repair files.
  • Closing the console early: a paused DISM percentage is not proof that it is frozen. Wait for completion, then allow SFC to reach 100 percent.
  • Using an unmatched Windows image: a repair source from another edition or build can fail or introduce mismatched files.
  • Replacing DLLs from download sites: the code does not identify a trustworthy replacement, and an arbitrary file may be incompatible or unsafe.
  • Resetting before backing up: recovery choices differ in what they preserve. Confirm the option’s effect before accepting it.
  • Assuming the code has one universal fix: no dedicated Microsoft mapping or prevalence data establishes a single cause for 0x0093EFA2.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek more diagnosis?

Stop repeating the same repair when the error returns after a successful DISM/SFC run, appears in several unrelated applications, or is accompanied by disk, memory, or repeated unexpected-shutdown symptoms. Preserve Event Viewer details, CBS.log, the exact Windows build, and a timeline of changes for the PC manufacturer or Microsoft support. If the drive is failing or data is at risk, prioritize a verified backup or professional data-preservation service over repeated resets.

For a Windows 10 machine, also weigh the end of support on October 14, 2025 when deciding whether to keep repairing the installation or move to a supported Windows release. A recovery action can correct corruption; it cannot restore security updates that are no longer supplied for the operating system.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can look for more than 100 common Windows issues, adjust selected settings, clear temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and offer tools such as real-time boost, file shredding, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 with a free trial by category of at least two days before a paid subscription; it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, and results vary.

Frequently asked questions

Is 0x0093EFA2 a virus?

The code alone cannot establish that. A broad vendor description includes malware among several possible scenarios, but no consulted Microsoft mapping identifies this value as a malware detection. Use your existing security software and inspect the surrounding symptom instead of treating the hexadecimal value as a diagnosis.

Where can I find the SFC details?

SFC records servicing information in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Open the file with an administrator account and search for entries containing [SR]; copy the relevant lines together with your Windows build when requesting help.

Can System Restore recover a deleted personal file?

No. System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings while leaving personal files unchanged. Recover an individually deleted document from Windows Backup, File History, or another backup instead.

Why is WinRE asking for a BitLocker key?

Recovery tools need to unlock an encrypted Windows volume before they can inspect or repair it. The key is a separate recovery credential, commonly stored with the Microsoft account or organization that enabled BitLocker; locate it before selecting destructive recovery options.

Will installation media always fix this code?

No. A USB installer gives you another route into WinRE and can reinstall Windows, but it does not identify the cause of 0x0093EFA2 or guarantee that an application, hardware, or storage fault will disappear. Use it after backups and targeted recovery steps, and verify the edition and architecture before installation.
