The same-looking number can be surfaced by different software, and a decoder’s label is only a secondary clue.
Microsoft’s general Win32 error table covers system errors from 0 through 499. It is not a complete decoder for every hexadecimal value that Windows or a third-party installer may display, so finding no useful entry there is expected.

What should I record before changing anything?
Capture the circumstances first. A precise record prevents you from losing the clue that identifies which troubleshooting branch applies.
- Copy the complete message, including punctuation, any text before or after

Yes, but treat the result as a lead rather than a diagnosis. Microsoft’s technical guidance lists two hexadecimal error-decoding utilities.
- Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt. If your account requires elevation for the utility you use, choose Run as administrator.
- Run
certutil -error 0x00962C6C. - If you already have Microsoft’s
err.exeutility installed, runerr.exe 0x00962C6C. - Save the output with the original message and the device or application that produced it.
A decoder can return a generic or unrelated symbolic description, or no useful description at all. Do not use that output to label the problem as a printer fault unless the error was actually raised during printer setup or printing.

On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Printer, and choose Run the troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends the automated printer troubleshooter for both Windows 11 and Windows 10.
When it finishes, retry the exact action that produced 0x00962C6C. If the wizard reports that it could not fix the issue, keep its result and continue rather than repeatedly running it.
2. Power-cycle the printer and inspect the connection
Microsoft notes that power cycling can resolve printer problems. Turn the printer off, unplug its power cable, wait 30 seconds, reconnect it, and turn it on. Wait until its normal ready state appears before testing Windows again.

- When the model appears, select it and complete setup. Print a Windows test page or a small document.
If discovery fails, select Add manually in the add-device dialog. Follow the available path that matches your setup, such as selecting a shared printer, entering a TCP/IP address supplied by the printer’s network page, or choosing the device from a list of installed drivers. Use the exact model rather than a similarly named series.

4. Match and repair the printer driver
Driver selection must match the printer model, Windows edition, and system architecture. A package for a related model or the wrong 32-bit/64-bit architecture can leave the printer present but unusable.
- Open Device Manager and expand Printers, Print queues, or the category where the device appears.
- Right-click the printer or an entry with a warning icon and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers and restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- If Windows cannot find a suitable package, go to the printer manufacturer’s official support site, search by the exact model, and download the package for your Windows version and architecture.
- Run the manufacturer’s installer with the printer connected or on the same network as instructed by that installer. Avoid substituting a driver for a visually similar model.

Clearing the spool folder removes pending print jobs. Save or cancel anything you still need before performing this reset.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The printer procedures above still describe the Windows 10 interface, but a Windows 10 machine in 2026 is outside Microsoft’s normal support period. When contacting support, include the exact Windows 10 version and build so the vendor can account for that support status.
