- Install all pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot and approve the administrator prompt if Windows requests it.
- Follow the licensing prompts. If asked for a product key, enter a valid 25-character key for the installed edition.
- Restart after the troubleshooter completes, then check the same Activation page for the current status.
If the troubleshooter reports a different code, record that new code and the complete explanation. Do not keep applying generic update or crash fixes when the evidence now points to licensing. If activation still fails, use Microsoft support and provide the screenshots, edition, build and both codes.
How do I fix it after Windows Update, setup or an upgrade?
Separate a servicing failure from a hardware conflict before repairing Windows. Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, docks and recently added components, then perform a clean restart and retry the operation. Repair the Windows image

DISM repairs the component image that Windows uses for servicing; SFC checks protected system files against that image. If either command reports an error, save the exact output rather than repeating it indefinitely. The output, build number and original setup message are useful to Microsoft support.

When the update still will not complete
Return to Device Manager and note every warning icon, especially one that appeared after a hardware change. Resolve the device issue through the manufacturer’s documented driver or support process, then retry the update. Avoid treating a generic hexadecimal value as proof that a particular device is defective.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 machine can still display this code, but its support status matters when deciding whether to continue troubleshooting an upgrade or move to a supported Windows release. Keep the Windows 10 edition and build in any support request.

What should I do if the code follows a crash or unexpected restart?
A crash path starts with stability evidence, not activation repairs. Record the blue-screen stop code and any module name, then undo the most recent physical or driver change.
- Shut down and remove recently added hardware if it can be disconnected safely.

Stop before applying an unrelated fix. Save the screenshot, winver result, application name, trigger and any logs available from the originating component. Then contact that application’s support channel; if the message came from Windows itself, use Microsoft support and quote the complete text.

Can I safely keep using the PC while the code is unidentified?
That depends on the symptom, not the code. A one-time dialog with normal operation is different from repeated crashes, failed boots, data corruption or an activation warning.
