- Take a screenshot and copy the complete message, including its title, buttons and any second code. A cropped image containing only

Did 0x0097AF97 appear during Windows Update?
Use this branch when the message appeared while Windows was checking for, downloading or installing an update, or when Update history names a failed KB. Windows 11 and Windows 10 place the built-in troubleshooter in different Settings locations.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters. Find Windows Update, select Run, follow the prompts, and restart when asked.
- On Windows 10, select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update. Run it, apply any suggested action, and restart.
- After the restart, return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the update installs, open Update history and confirm that the previously failed KB is listed as successful.
Microsoft describes the purpose of this tool plainly: "If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem." The troubleshooter is a first diagnostic step, not proof that the undocumented code has a specific Microsoft meaning.
What if the troubleshooter does not resolve the update failure?
Use the failed KB and your Windows build to keep the repair targeted. Do not replace the unknown code with a guessed cause.
- Open Command Prompt with administrator rights. Search for Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, approve the User Account Control prompt, and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAllow the operation to finish; it can remain at one percentage for a while. Restart Windows after it completes, then try Windows Update again.

- Install the latest servicing stack update appropriate for your Windows version. A servicing-stack package must match the installed release; do not substitute a package for another edition or build.
- Run the Windows file-corruption check Microsoft documents for your situation. On systems where System File Checker is appropriate, an administrator Command Prompt can run
sfc /scannow; restart if it reports repairs and then test Windows Update again. - If Update history identifies a particular KB, use Microsoft Update Catalog to locate a package that matches the exact Windows version and processor architecture. Check the package description before downloading, and install only the KB that corresponds to your build. A random package, registry edit or third-party “repair” download is not a safe substitute.
- Check Update history again after each attempt. Keep the KB number, the result and any new code so that a later support request has a reproducible sequence.
If the failure changes to a different, documented code, use that code’s Microsoft support procedure rather than continuing to search for a meaning for 0x0097AF97. If the same message appears outside Update history, return to the source-identification step.
Did the message appear while activating Windows?
Activation has a separate troubleshooter. Use it only when the message appeared on an activation screen or while changing a product key, not for an ordinary update failure.
- On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot. Select the activation troubleshooter and allow it to run. Administrator access is required.
- On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Troubleshoot. Sign in or provide administrator approval if Windows requests it.

If the activation code is not listed in Microsoft’s activation guidance, or the listed steps fail, use Microsoft Support and provide the screenshot, edition, version, build, license history and hardware change details. Do not buy another key or edit licensing files merely because an unverified code appeared.
Could 0x0097AF97 come from a browser or third-party application?
Yes. A browser tab, game launcher, utility, installer or scam-style pop-up can print any text it chooses, including a string that resembles a Windows code. Microsoft’s Windows pages cannot verify ownership when the message did not come from a Microsoft Settings or update screen.
- Close the tab or application using its normal close button. If a webpage prevents this, close the browser window from the taskbar or use
Alt + F4; do not interact with an unexpected phone number or remote-access prompt. - Reopen the program from its normal shortcut and check whether the message returns. Note the application name and version, the file or action involved, and whether another program was open.
- Use the publisher’s documented support channel for that application. Give the publisher the exact text and screenshot, but do not claim that Microsoft owns the code unless the publisher confirms it.
- If the message appeared after installing an application, pause further installations and review that program’s uninstall or repair instructions. Keep the original installer and logs available for support rather than downloading a replacement from an unverified site.
An unexpected alert is not evidence that Windows is infected or broken. The code by itself cannot establish malware, a licensing problem or hardware failure; context and the originating program are the evidence.

Does Windows 10 support status affect this error?
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer can continue to run, but an unsupported installation may not receive free Windows Update fixes. If the message is connected to updating Windows 10, record the exact release and check what servicing or support options apply to that release before assuming that another update attempt will be offered.
This date does not turn 0x0097AF97 into a known Windows 10 code. It only changes the support context and the availability of future updates.
When should I escalate the problem?
