- Copy or photograph the complete error message, including any text before or after the code.
- Note which screen or application displayed it: for example, Windows Setup, Windows Update, an activation screen, or another program.
- Write down what you were doing immediately beforehand and whether Windows continued normally, restarted, or stopped booting.

- Disconnect nonessential hardware. Shut down and unplug devices not needed for the installation, such as printers, scanners, external drives, docks, and USB flash drives. Leave only the equipment required to use the PC.
- Check Device Manager. Open Start, search for
Device Manager, and inspect the device list for warning icons. If a device is flagged, note its name and address that device before trying the upgrade again. - Check the disk for errors. Repair disk errors when appropriate before retrying the installation. Work through the checks in order
- Try Safe Mode if Windows will not start reliably. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If Windows is stable there, that can help distinguish a startup or driver problem from a failure that also occurs in a minimal environment. Use Windows recovery options to reach startup settings when necessary.
- Undo recent hardware changes. If you added hardware shortly before the crashes began, power down and remove or disconnect it if safe to do so. Then test whether Windows starts normally.
- Inspect drivers in Device Manager. Open Start, search for
Device Manager, and check for warning icons or a device that stopped working around the time the problem began. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first. If the update still fails, reset the update download cache, check that the date and time are automatic, and try the update again.

- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Open Windows Settings, find the Troubleshoot section, and run the troubleshooter for Windows Update. Follow any on-screen repair instructions and then retry the update.
- Stop the Windows Update service. Press
Windows key + R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. In Services, find Windows Update, open its context menu, and choose Stop. - Clear the update cache contents. In File Explorer, open
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionand delete the contents of that folder. Delete the contents, not the folder itself. If Windows says files are in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped before continuing. - Start the service again. Return to Services, open the context menu for Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Check date and time. In Settings, verify that automatic date and time are enabled, then retry Windows Update.
