- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, locate Windows Update, and select Run. Microsoft may instead launch the automated helper in the Get Help app; follow its prompts.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.

4. Repair the Windows image with DISM
DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses to service updates. Save open work, connect the computer to reliable power, and use an elevated Command Prompt:

Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to reach completion. The percentage can pause for a long time; do not close the window solely because progress appears unchanged. - Restart Windows after DISM finishes, then try Windows Update once more.

5. Repair protected system files with SFC
After DISM, run Microsoft’s System File Checker from the same elevated Command Prompt:
