- Disconnect nonessential external hardware. Shut down the computer and unplug external storage, docks, printers, cameras and other USB devices that are not needed for setup. Leave only essential input devices and the installation media or network connection required for the process.
- Check Device Manager. After Windows starts, press Win+X and select Device Manager. Look for devices with a warning symbol or an entry that disappeared after a recent hardware change. Record the device name and status rather than uninstalling hardware at random.
- Check the installation drive. In File Explorer, open This PC, right-click the drive used for Windows, choose Properties, open the Tools tab and use Error checking. Allow Windows to complete the check before retrying setup.
