What should I record before changing Windows?
Capture evidence first so that a later repair can be matched to the original failure and so support staff can identify the real source.
- Take a screenshot that includes the window title, full text, and any update or application name.
- Copy the complete message rather than retyping only the hexadecimal string.
- Write down the exact Settings page, application, installer, or web page where it appeared.

2. Reset the Windows Update cache
A damaged or incomplete cached package can make an update fail repeatedly. Microsoft’s documented reset removes the contents of the cache folder, not personal documents.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, locate Windows Update, right-click it, and choose Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- Open File Explorer and enter
C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionin the address bar. - Delete the contents inside that folder. Do not delete the
SoftwareDistributionfolder itself. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and retry. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and choose Start.
- Restart Windows and run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates again.

3. Repair the component store with DISM

4. Check protected system files with SFC
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannowAllow the scan to reach 100 percent, then restart Windows. Retry the update and check Update history for the complete result. DISM and SFC repair Windows components; they do not prove that the unlisted hexadecimal value came from those components.
5. If the update still fails
- Copy the newest complete Update history entry, including the update’s knowledge-base identifier if one is shown.
- Compare the wording and location with the screenshot you saved. A different message may indicate that the original code came from another program.
