What should I record before trying a fix?
Capture the evidence while the message is visible. Copy the complete text or take a clear photograph, including any title, second code, stop-screen name, file name, or device name. Do not crop away the heading or buttons; those details often identify the subsystem.
- Location: note whether it appeared in Settings > System > Activation, a device’s Properties page in Device Manager, a blue or black stop screen, Windows Update, or inside one application.
- Trigger: write down what you clicked or installed immediately beforehand. Record whether the event followed a Windows update, driver change, hardware connection, software installation, or no identifiable change.
- Windows build: press
Win+R, enterwinver, and save the edition, version, and build number. Include whether the installation is Windows 11 or Windows 10. - Desktop access: note whether Windows still reaches the desktop normally. If it does not, use recovery options rather than normal Settings paths.

winverand record the edition and build. Activation behavior differs between editions, so include this information in any support request. - On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check there. Install available updates and restart when prompted.
- Open the activation page: Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10.
- Select Troubleshoot and let the diagnostic complete. Write down the code and full wording shown after it finishes; the displayed code may change.
- If the resulting value is still not listed in Microsoft’s activation documentation, contact Microsoft support with the exact message, edition, build, account or license context, and the troubleshooter result. Do not repeatedly enter random keys or alter licensing files.
Keep any information about a recent motherboard replacement, edition change, or reinstall for support, but do not infer that one of those events is responsible unless the complete message says so. If Windows cannot reach the desktop, use the recovery environment or another working device to preserve the message and support details rather than guessing at activation commands.
How do I fix it when Device Manager shows the code?
Device Manager provides the device name and a fuller Device status message; those details are essential because the hexadecimal value by itself is not a diagnosis.
- Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand the category containing the warning icon, and double-click the affected device.
- On the General tab, copy the entire Device status message and note the device name, manufacturer, hardware category, and driver date.
- Choose the Driver tab and select Update Driver. Allow Windows to search, or use a driver supplied by the device manufacturer for your exact model and Windows version.
- If the driver is corrupted or the update does not help, select Uninstall Device, confirm, and restart Windows. After restart, open Device Manager and use Action > Scan for hardware changes if the device is not detected automatically.
- Test the hardware again. If the complete status message still contains an unlisted code, contact the hardware manufacturer or Microsoft Support with the device identity, driver details, and
winveroutput.
Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking model or a different Windows version. Save the existing driver details before uninstalling so you can describe exactly what changed. Avoid registry “fixes” that claim to translate this number. Device Manager’s own documentation says its published list is not exhaustive, so the manufacturer’s status text and driver package are more useful than a generic code lookup.
What if 0x009A691D appeared on a stop screen or after a crash?
Do not classify it as a confirmed Windows stop error without the stop-screen name and bug-check context. Photograph the entire screen, including any text such as IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, a percentage counter, or a file name. - If the crash began immediately after a driver or hardware change, disconnect or roll back that change only when Windows provides a matching option, then retest.
Change one variable at a time and record the result. Repeated crashes, memory-test errors, or a machine that cannot stay running warrant hardware-service or Microsoft support escalation with the stop-screen name and crash details. Do not buy RAM, an SSD, or another component solely because this hexadecimal value appeared; the value does not establish a hardware fault.

How do I repair Windows files when features are malfunctioning?
When several Windows components fail or the error appears outside a single app, use Microsoft’s built-in image and protected-file repair sequence. DISM must run before System File Checker because it supplies the repair source SFC may need.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter the following command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Leave the window open until DISM reports completion. Closing it early can leave the repair unfinished.
- In the same elevated window, run:
sfc /scannow - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC will report whether it found and repaired protected-file corruption.
- Restart Windows and repeat the original action that produced the error. Keep both command results for support if the problem remains.
These commands repair Windows components; they do not establish what namespace produced 0x009A691D. If both complete without finding a problem, return to the screen-specific workflow instead of repeating them indefinitely. Never close the Command Prompt merely because progress pauses; wait for a completion message.

Capture the full Windows Update wording, update name or number if shown, the current build from winver, and the update history. Then note whether the same code appears elsewhere. A value confined to Windows Update may require the update’s own rollback or support path, while a code that also appears in Device Manager or an application points to a broader issue.
If the failure began immediately after an identifiable update, use the available installed-update uninstall option only for that documented change. Timing is evidence to preserve, not proof of causation. Do not install unrelated driver packs or registry scripts simply because a search result associates them with a similar-looking number.
What should I do if the problem began after an update, driver, or app install?
Record the change, then use the corresponding Windows rollback or uninstall control. The available choice depends on what changed and whether Windows can still reach the desktop.
- Driver: in Device Manager, open the device’s Properties and use Roll Back Driver when Windows enables it. Otherwise uninstall the device, restart, and install the manufacturer’s known-good package.
- Windows update: open the installed-update history and use the available uninstall option only for the update you documented as new. Keep in mind that timing alone does not prove the update caused this code.
- Application: use the application’s own repair or update feature. Where Windows exposes it, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, and choose Advanced options followed by Repair or Reset. Reset can remove that app’s local settings or data, so back up anything the app stores locally first.
If removing the change does not restore normal behavior, reinstall only after saving the app’s settings and logs. Ask the software vendor for help with the complete message rather than asserting that the hexadecimal value identifies a particular update or malware family.

Does Windows 10 still receive support for this error?
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025.
