Why the source changes the repair
- Browser page or pop-up: A phone number, full-screen behavior, repeated dialogs, audio, or a request to install remote-access software points to a likely support scam. Microsoft says that real Windows error messages never ask you to call a technical-support number.
- Installed application: The code may belong to that application’s own error system. The application’s name, version, action being performed, and exact text are needed before choosing a repair.
- Printing only: Treat the symptom as a printer, driver, queue, or Print Spooler issue. The code itself is not documented as a printer code.
Is the 0x009B568C Microsoft warning real or a scam?
A browser warning that pressures you to call someone or grant remote control should be treated as a likely technical-support scam, not as proof that Windows detected a critical failure. Scam pages can imitate Windows branding, force a browser into full-screen mode, play audio, open repeated dialogs, and display invented hexadecimal codes. The safest response is to close the page without following its instructions.

Do not call the number, click a “fix” button, download a proposed update, install remote-access software, or allow a stranger to control the PC. A caller who claims to be Microsoft and asks for payment, passwords, or remote access is not validated by the presence of this code. Windows does not turn an ordinary browser page into an official support channel.
What should I do immediately when the code appears?
Use this sequence before attempting repairs. It limits the chance that a deceptive page or an unwanted program will remain active.

- Close the browser normally. Use the browser’s close button or keyboard shortcut. Do not restore the suspicious tab when the browser starts again.
- End the browser process if it will not close. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager, select the affected browser, choose End task, and confirm. Ending the process can discard unsaved browser work, but it avoids continuing to interact with the page. - Restart Windows. A restart clears the browser process and makes it easier to determine whether the message returns without reopening the page.
- Scan if anything was downloaded or run. Use a trusted, up-to-date antimalware product and run a full scan. If an installer or script was executed, do not assume that closing the browser removed it.
- Remove suspicious software and persistence. Uninstall an unfamiliar program that arrived with the alert and review recently added startup or scheduled entries. Do not delete system files merely because their names look technical; isolate the item through your security software or a qualified technician.
- Protect accounts from a clean device. If a fake update or remote session may have exposed browser-saved passwords, cookies, payment details, or account tokens, change the affected passwords from another trusted device. Prioritize email, financial, and administrator accounts, then enable two-factor authentication where available.
What if I downloaded or ran the fake update?
Closing a tab is not sufficient after an installation or remote session. A fake update can leave an installed program or persistence mechanism behind, and a remote operator may have viewed credentials or browser sessions.
Contain the machine and remove the unwanted installation
Disconnect the affected computer from the internet if a remote operator is still connected or suspicious activity is continuing. Do not use the machine for banking or account recovery until a full antimalware scan has completed. Remove the suspicious installation through Windows’ normal installed-app controls, and let the security product quarantine anything it identifies. If the scanner reports that it cannot clean an item, follow its offline or restart-scan procedure rather than manually deleting random files.

Reset credentials in the right order
Use a known-clean phone or computer to change the email account that can reset other passwords first. Then change financial, shopping, work, and administrator credentials that were saved in the affected browser or entered during the session. Sign out other sessions when a service offers that control, replace reused passwords, and enable two-factor authentication. Changing credentials on the potentially compromised computer before scanning can expose the new passwords again.
Use only legitimate Windows update channels
Install Windows updates through Settings > Windows Update or by using the official Microsoft Update Catalog. Do not use a support domain typed by a caller or copied from the pop-up. A Malwarebytes report dated April 9, 2026, described a fake Microsoft update distributed through a typosquatted support domain and specifically identified built-in Windows Update and the Microsoft Update Catalog as legitimate update channels.

If the code appears in a normal application dialog rather than a browser page, do not label it a Windows error yet. Record the application’s name, the operation that triggered the message, the complete wording, the URL or file involved, and a screenshot made without reopening a suspicious page. Check whether the dialog returns after a restart and whether it appears only with one document or account.
Separate an application fault from a system-wide fault
- If only one application shows the code, use that application’s documented repair, update, or reinstall process. Keep the exact text because an application may use the same hexadecimal-looking format for an internal error.
- If several unrelated applications fail at the same time, scan Windows and check recent software or update changes before assuming that the code identifies a single component.
- If the dialog includes a phone number, remote-access request, or urgent payment demand, return to the browser-scam procedure even if it uses Windows logos.
- If the error is tied to a particular file or URL, avoid opening that item repeatedly until it has been scanned or verified.
Without the originating application’s name or a reproducible action, there is no responsible basis for naming a particular DLL, registry key, driver, or malware family as the cause of 0x009B568C.

What should I do if 0x009B568C appears only when printing?
Use the printer branch only when the message is reproducible during printing. Microsoft recommends running the Windows printer troubleshooter, installing the latest driver from the printer manufacturer, and resetting the Print Spooler when necessary. Because the hexadecimal value is not documented as a printer code, these steps address the observed printing failure rather than decoding the number.
Run the printer troubleshooter
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Printer, and select Run.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Printer, and run the troubleshooter.
- Accept a suggested repair only after checking that the selected printer is the one that fails. Print a test page after the troubleshooter finishes.
Install the correct manufacturer driver
Download the current driver for the exact printer model from the printer manufacturer’s support site. Match the package to your Windows edition and system architecture, remove a stale or duplicate printer entry if the manufacturer’s instructions require it, then restart Windows and test again. Avoid drivers offered by the warning page or by an unsolicited caller.

Clear a stuck print queue
When jobs remain stuck, clear the queue before testing another print. You need an administrator account for the service and folder steps.
- Open the printer queue and cancel every listed job.
- Open the Services app, locate Print Spooler, choose Stop, and leave the window open.
- In File Explorer, go to
C:WindowsSystem32spoolPRINTERSand delete the files inside that folder. Delete the contents, not the folder itself. - Return to Services and choose Start for Print Spooler.
- Restart the printer and the PC, reconnect the printer if necessary, and print a small test document.
If the queue immediately fills again, test with another document and application. A failure limited to one application or file points back to that application or document; a failure across all print jobs warrants checking the driver, connection, and printer manufacturer’s support instructions.

Does the procedure differ between Windows 11 and Windows 10?
The safety response is the same on both versions: identify where the message came from, close a suspicious browser page, scan after execution, protect exposed credentials, and use only legitimate update channels. The main visible difference is the location of the printer troubleshooter, shown above.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The operating system can continue to run after that date, but Microsoft no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes under that support lifecycle notice. That status does not make 0x009B568C a documented Windows code, and it does not make a browser warning legitimate. If a Windows 10 PC remains in service, treat the lack of ongoing security fixes as a separate maintenance and upgrade decision.

What should I avoid while troubleshooting?
- Do not call a number displayed by the warning, even if the page uses a Windows logo or claims that your files are at risk.
- Do not grant remote access to a caller who contacted you because of this code.
- Do not install a “support tool,” browser extension, driver, or update supplied by the pop-up.
- Do not keep refreshing or reopening the page to see whether the code changes.
- Do not delete DLLs, registry entries, or system folders based solely on a web search for the hexadecimal value.
- Do not treat a clean browser restart as proof that an executed installer was harmless; scan and secure accounts when execution occurred.
- Do not use printer queue and spooler commands when the message is unrelated to printing; they will not decode an unknown application or browser code.
When should I seek additional help?
Escalate to the software vendor or a qualified technician when the exact application is known but its repair instructions do not resolve the fault, when a printer repeatedly fails after a clean queue and current driver, or when a security scan reports an item it cannot remove. Provide the recorded application name, full message, timing, recent changes, and whether a file was executed. Do not provide a scam caller with remote access as a substitute for legitimate support.

Should I restore my browser session after closing the 0x009B568C page?
