If 0x009BCA22 appears in a browser pop-up, a fake blue screen, or a warning telling you to call support, do not call the number or follow the page’s instructions. No authoritative Microsoft page identified in the available material defines 0x009BCA22 as a Windows error, and Microsoft says its genuine error and warning messages never include phone numbers. A browser warning is not proof that Windows is damaged; first close the page, then scan the PC and check whether anyone persuaded you to install software or share information.
What does error 0x009BCA22 mean?
The code has no confirmed Windows component or meaning in the Microsoft material available for this issue. Treat it as an unverified code, not a diagnosis: a number printed on a warning page does not establish that Windows generated the message or that a particular system file is broken.

How the message appeared is more useful than the code itself. A web page or browser notification that uses urgent language, plays audio, takes over the screen, displays a support number, asks you to install remote-access software, or requests payment has the hallmarks of a technical-support scam. Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “Microsoft error and warning messages never include phone numbers.” It also says it does not make unsolicited calls or send unsolicited email asking for personal or financial information or offering to fix a computer.
There is a different case: you may see the code during a Windows setup or upgrade that you deliberately started, without a phone number or unsolicited support request. That should be handled as an installation problem using Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation troubleshooting guidance, rather than by treating an unrelated browser warning as an installer error.

What should I do first if the 0x009BCA22 warning is on my screen?
Do not interact with the warning. Don’t call its number, click its links, pay, or grant remote access. Close the browser; if it will not close, end its task in Task Manager.
- Ignore the contact instructions. Do not call a number shown in the warning or give the page information. Microsoft’s advice is: “Don’t call the number in the pop-ups.”
- Try to close the browser normally. Use its close button, or press
Alt+F4while the browser window is selected. A browser-locked scam page often stops appearing when the browser is closed; the page itself does not prove that Windows is locked or damaged. - If it remains stuck, end the browser task. Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. Select the browser process and choose End task. This closes the browser abruptly, so any unsaved work in its tabs may be lost. - Do not reopen the same warning to investigate it. Once the browser is closed, continue with the security check below. You do not need to call anyone advertised on the page to remove it.
How do I check Windows for unwanted software?
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan after closing the page. Microsoft recommends a full scan because a scam interaction can result in malware or unwanted programs being installed; a browser pop-up alone, however, does not establish that an infection occurred.

- Choose Virus & threat protection, then open Protection updates and check for updates to the security definitions. Windows may show slightly different labels depending on its version and updates.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Full scan, and start the scan.
- Let the scan finish and follow Windows Security’s instructions for anything it identifies. If it finds nothing, that result does not prove that no one accessed an account or that no unwanted application was installed; check those separately if you interacted with the scam.
What if I installed software or allowed remote access?
If a caller or pop-up persuaded you to install a remote-access application or another program, remove the software they asked you to install and run the full scan. If you gave someone control of the PC, or the warning keeps returning after these steps, consider a Windows reset after securing essential files.

Remove software installed at the scammer’s request
In Windows, open Settings and review the installed apps list. Uninstall remote-access software and any other application you installed because the caller or warning instructed you to do so. The Windows settings path and wording can vary between Windows 11 and Windows 10; search Settings for Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10. Do not remove a program merely because you do not recognize its name; if you are unsure whether it is legitimate, seek help from a trusted technician rather than the contact information in the warning.
Protect accounts and payment information
If you shared passwords, change them from a device you believe is clean, not from a computer that may still be under someone else’s remote control. Review your accounts for unfamiliar sign-ins or changes. If you disclosed card or bank information, paid, or gave someone access to financial accounts, contact the relevant bank or card issuer using its official app, website, or the number on your card. These are recovery steps for information you shared; they do not depend on whether the scan detects malware.
When should I consider resetting Windows?
A reset is more disruptive than closing a browser and scanning, so it is not the first response to a pop-up that you closed without installing anything or giving access. It may be appropriate if a scammer remotely controlled the computer or the fake warning or unwanted behavior persists. Before resetting, preserve essential files safely and make sure you can access the accounts and installation information you will need afterward. A reset can affect apps and files depending on the options selected; read the Windows prompts carefully rather than assuming your data will be retained.

Windows 11 provides reset options under Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, look under Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. The available options and displayed wording can differ by Windows version. If the PC contains irreplaceable files or you are uncertain whether they are safely backed up, get help from a trusted recovery professional before starting a reset.
What if the code appears during a Windows 11 or 10 upgrade?
If you started Windows Setup or an upgrade yourself and the code appears there, with no unsolicited phone number or request for support, use Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation troubleshooting guidance. The code alone is not enough to identify which installation issue occurred, so do not apply a fix intended for a browser scam or guess at a system-file repair.
Record when the code appears and what you were doing—for example, whether setup had just started or was already in progress—then follow the troubleshooting steps for Windows upgrades and installations. Do not use a phone number or link presented in a separate pop-up as part of that process. If the code appears only in a browser, return to the scam-page steps instead of assuming the upgrade is responsible.

How can I prevent similar warnings?
Keep Microsoft Defender enabled, install Windows updates, download software only from official vendor sites or the Microsoft Store, and use a current browser. These measures reduce exposure to common risks, but they do not make every pop-up trustworthy or guarantee that a deceptive page will never appear.
Microsoft Edge includes protections against scam sites and misleading notification spam. If a suspicious site has permission to send notifications, turn off notifications for that site in Edge’s settings; notification permission is separate from Windows error reporting. If you are unsure whether a message is genuine, close the page and seek support through a channel you locate independently rather than following the message’s contact details.

A website may have permission to send notifications even after its tab is closed. In your browser’s site-permission settings, find the suspicious site and revoke its notification permission; do not click the notification to investigate it.
Should I pay someone to remove error 0x009BCA22?
