Error 0x009C3177 has no confirmed meaning or universal fix in Microsoft’s published troubleshooting material. The same hexadecimal string could be shown by a device-installation dialog, Windows Setup, Windows Update, an application, or a startup failure. Do not apply a random driver, boot command, or registry change yet. First record exactly where it appears, what you were doing, the complete message around the code, and any named device, application, update, or stop code. Then follow the troubleshooting path for that context.
What does error 0x009C3177 mean?
At present, Microsoft’s documented error-code lists and the general troubleshooting pages consulted here do not identify which Windows component generates 0x009C3177. A message from Device Manager has different causes and recovery steps from a Windows Update message, and neither should be treated like a blue-screen stop code. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are covered by Microsoft’s general installation and update guidance, but those pages do not establish that this particular code occurs on either version.
Before changing anything, take a screenshot or transcribe the whole dialog. Include the window title, the sentence before and after the code, the application or device name, the update or setup stage, and whether Windows still starts normally. If the message came from a game or another app, record that app’s version and the action that triggered it. This context is the key diagnostic evidence.

Match the symptom to one of the following paths. If none fits, keep the complete message and contact the software or hardware vendor rather than guessing.

How should I document the error before trying a fix?
- Capture the entire message. A cropped image containing only
0x009C3177removes the information support staff need. - Write down the trigger. Note whether you plugged in hardware, installed a driver, started an update, launched a game, or rebooted.
- Check the timing. State whether Windows is usable, whether the message returns after every restart, and whether Safe Mode behaves differently.
- Preserve logs. Save relevant setup, update, Device Manager, application, or startup-repair details before clearing caches or resetting components.

How do I troubleshoot 0x009C3177 in Device Manager?
If the code appears beside a device, treat it as a device-installation or device-status problem until the full message proves otherwise. Microsoft’s device and driver installation troubleshooting guidance explains how to inspect the device and installation information.
1. Inspect the device’s status
- Press
Win+Xand select Device Manager. - Expand the category containing the affected device. Look for a warning icon or an entry that appeared immediately before the message.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, and read the complete text on the General tab. Record the status code shown there; it may be different from
0x009C3177. - Open the Details tab and note the hardware IDs if the vendor asks for them. Do not delete the device until you have recorded its identity.
2. Check installation information
Device installation logs can show whether Windows rejected a package, could not find a matching driver, or failed while configuring the device. Follow the log-inspection procedure in Microsoft’s guidance and preserve the relevant entries. The hexadecimal string in a pop-up is not, by itself, proof that a driver is defective.
3. Use the official support route for an unlisted code
Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code article states that its list does not cover every code Windows can generate. If the status is absent from that list, Microsoft advises contacting the hardware vendor or Microsoft Support. Give them the device model, hardware IDs, Windows edition and build, the full message, and the installation-log excerpt.
Avoid downloading a driver from an unverified mirror or forcing a package for a different model. If the device is essential, use the manufacturer’s support page to obtain the package intended for your exact model and Windows edition, then restart and verify the status again.

What should I do if the code appears during Windows setup or an upgrade?
First identify whether this was an in-place upgrade, a feature update, or a fresh installation. Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation troubleshooting page provides broad checks; it does not confirm that any one of them fixes 0x009C3177.

Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down and unplug external drives, USB hubs, printers, capture devices, controllers, and other peripherals that are not needed for setup. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection required by the installation, and the target installation media. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows is stable so a newly introduced failure can be identified.
Check Device Manager before retrying
Once you can reach Windows, look for warning icons or devices without a proper driver. Resolve those problems through the device manufacturer before running setup again. A setup failure and a device-status failure can occur together without sharing the same root cause.
Repair disk and system files
Back up first, then open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin). Microsoft’s installation guidance includes repairing disk errors and restoring system files as general checks. The following built-in commands are typical ways to perform those checks:

sfc /scannowRun them one at a time and read the result after each command. chkdsk may request a restart for a deeper repair; accept that only after saving work. DISM and System File Checker repair the Windows component store or protected files when corruption is found, but a successful result does not establish that this unidentified code has been fixed. Retry the same setup operation only after recording the original failure and confirming that the system is backed up.
Capture setup details if it fails again
Write down the exact stage and message on the second failure. The edition, language, installation media, storage configuration, and whether the failure occurs before or after the first restart can change the correct next step. Provide those details to Microsoft Support or the device maker instead of repeating the same installation indefinitely.
How do I handle 0x009C3177 in Windows Update?
Use this section only when the message is displayed by Windows Update in Settings or by the update process. There is no source linking 0x009C3177 specifically to Windows Update, so the steps below are general diagnostics.
Windows 11
Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run if that option is present. Microsoft’s current Windows Update Troubleshooter page directs Windows 11 users to the Get Help app; follow the prompts it provides and allow it to complete its checks.

Windows 10
Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter. The labels can vary slightly by build, so use the Windows Update Troubleshooter instructions if the option is not visible.
After the troubleshooter
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on Windows 10).
- Select Check for updates and note the update name and complete result.
- If the same message returns, save the troubleshooter report and update history before trying another repair.
Do not switch to boot-repair commands merely because the code is hexadecimal. Update failures and boot failures use different logs and recovery procedures.
What if the message appears at startup or on a blue screen?
Record whether the machine fails before the Windows logo, during the spinning-loader stage, immediately after sign-in, or only when a particular program starts. Also capture the complete blue-screen stop code; 0x009C3177 may be an accompanying value rather than the stop code that identifies the failure.
If Windows still reaches the desktop
Microsoft’s stop-error troubleshooting guidance recommends reviewing the full stop information, installing relevant Windows updates, checking BIOS and firmware updates, and running appropriate hardware and memory tests. Apply only the checks that match the observed symptoms and recent changes. If a firmware update is offered, verify the exact motherboard or computer model and keep the system on reliable power during the update.
If Windows cannot start normally
Use Windows Recovery Environment rather than issuing commands from a random online list. Microsoft’s startup-issues guidance describes Startup Repair for boot-loader problems. From the recovery screen choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, then allow the diagnostic to finish.
Startup Repair records its activity at %windir%System32LogFilesSrtSrttrail.txt. If it reports that it could not repair the computer, preserve that log and the full screen message. A failed Startup Repair does not prove that 0x009C3177 is a boot-loader error; it only describes the repair attempt.
Use hardware and memory tests deliberately
Intermittent restarts, freezes, or failures after a hardware change justify the hardware and memory checks described by Microsoft. Disconnect newly added hardware where practical and test one change at a time. If the machine is unstable or contains important data, stop before repeated forced restarts and seek professional or manufacturer support.

What general checks are safe when the context is still unclear?
