Error 0x009FADA7 is not a documented Microsoft stop code. The extra “ADA7” may be a mistyped, vendor-specific, or unindexed value. Copy the message again from the blue screen, Event Viewer, or a memory dump before choosing a repair. If the intended code is Microsoft’s documented 0x0000009F, Windows is reporting DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE: a driver did not complete a requested power transition, left a power request outstanding, or timed out while Windows synchronized a change. The safest approach is to identify the exact source, check recent driver or hardware changes, inspect Device Manager and Event Viewer, then update, roll back, or remove the component that is blocking sleep, resume, shutdown, or another power-state change.

What does error 0x009FADA7 mean on Windows 11 and 10?

There is no authoritative Microsoft definition for the full string 0x009FADA7. Treat it as unverified until you copy it directly from the original message. Search phrases such as “0x009FADA7 Windows 11,” “0x009FADA7 Windows 10,” and “Windows blue screen 0x9F driver power state failure” may be combining an unindexed value with the documented 0x9F family.

Microsoft defines 0x0000009F as DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and says the error indicates that “the driver is in an inconsistent or invalid power state.” In practical terms, a kernel-mode driver, device, service, firmware component, or related power request failed to finish a transition such as sleep, hibernation, suspend, resume, restart, or shutdown. The longer ADA7 suffix is not explained by that documentation, so do not claim that it identifies a particular device without additional evidence.

How can I verify the code before trying a fix?

Start by recording exactly where the text appeared. A code from a blue screen is investigated differently from a code shown by an installer, a vendor utility, Device Manager, or Event Viewer. Microsoft’s 0x0000009F reference is a kernel bug-check explanation, not a definition for every application or hardware message that happens to contain similar characters.

  1. Copy the characters again. Distinguish zero from the letter O, and check every digit after 0x. If the screen disappeared, look for the corresponding event or memory dump rather than relying on memory.
  2. Record the trigger. Note whether the failure happened while entering sleep, waking, shutting down, restarting, connecting a dock, closing a laptop lid, or installing software.
  3. Write down the edition and build. Record whether the computer runs Windows 11 or Windows 10 and note any recent feature update, firmware update, driver installation, or hardware replacement.
  4. Keep the original wording. A vendor utility may add its own suffix or diagnostic identifier. Preserve that wording when contacting the hardware or software vendor.

If the code came from an installer or a vendor program rather than a blue screen, first follow that product’s diagnostic guidance. Do not force a 0x9F diagnosis onto an unrelated application error.

What usually triggers the documented 0x0000009F failure?

The documented family is about an incomplete or invalid driver power transition. The high-value clues are changes made shortly before the first crash, especially anything that can control a device during sleep, resume, shutdown, or startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A newly installed, updated, corrupted, or incompatible device driver.
  • A service that does not stop or resume when Windows changes power state.
  • New hardware such as a USB device, dock, storage device, network adapter, printer, or graphics component.
  • BIOS or device firmware that does not cooperate with the current Windows power-management behavior.
  • Power-saving settings that expose a driver problem during sleep, hibernation, suspend, or resume.
  • Pending Windows updates or outdated platform software.
  • Underlying hardware or memory problems that prevent a device from responding normally.

The code alone does not prove that a physical component is defective. It identifies a failed power-state operation; logs, driver events, and a dump are needed to connect that failure to a specific device or service.

Which fix should I try first?

Use the least destructive test that can produce useful evidence. The following order keeps changes reversible while moving toward device-specific action.

Action Startup access Reversibility Evidence gained Specificity
Record the source and trigger Normal mode or recovery environment Fully reversible Separates a kernel bug check from an installer or vendor message Applies to every case
Check Device Manager Normal mode; Safe Mode if Windows is unstable Updates and rollbacks can be reversed; uninstall requires reinstall or rescanning Yellow warning icons, driver events, and the affected device Device-specific
Review Event Viewer Normal mode or Safe Mode Read-only investigation Critical events in the same time window and related services Often identifies the blocking component
Temporarily change power settings Normal mode Highly reversible Whether sleep, hibernation, suspend, or resume is the trigger Power-transition specific
Update, roll back, disable, or uninstall a driver Normal mode or Safe Mode Rollback is reversible; uninstall is more disruptive Whether the suspected device controls the crash Device-specific
Install Windows, BIOS, firmware, and driver updates Normal mode; manufacturer recovery process may be required for firmware Firmware changes are less readily reversible Whether a known compatibility issue is corrected OEM or component specific
System Restore or reverting a recent change Recovery environment if Windows will not start Reversible only within available restore points or backups Whether the failure began with the change Change-specific

How do I use Device Manager to find the failing driver?

Device Manager is the most direct built-in place to connect a power-transition failure with a device. The same general guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, although the Settings and search presentation can differ slightly.

  1. Open Device Manager from the Start search or the power-user menu.
  2. Expand categories related to hardware recently added or recently updated. Pay particular attention to devices involved in the failure, such as network, storage, graphics, USB, audio, Bluetooth, docking, and chipset components.
  3. Look for a yellow exclamation mark or another warning symbol. Open the device’s Properties and read the status text.
  4. Open the Driver tab and inspect the driver details and driver events. The event history can show when Windows installed or changed the driver.
  5. If the failure began immediately after an update, choose Roll Back Driver when Windows offers that option. A rollback is preferable to random driver replacement because it tests a specific recent change.
  6. If the device is clearly implicated and a rollback is unavailable, temporarily Disable device and test the power transition. Re-enable it if the result does not change.
  7. Use Uninstall device only when you have a recovery plan and know how Windows or the manufacturer will reinstall the driver. Restart and rescan for hardware after removing a driver when appropriate.

Do not disable critical storage or boot hardware casually. If Device Manager shows no warning, that does not clear every driver: a component can fail a power request without displaying a yellow icon. Continue with Event Viewer and the timing of the crash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I use Event Viewer to identify the device or service?

Event Viewer can connect the crash to a device or service that blocked a power transition. It is especially useful when Device Manager appears normal.

  1. Open Event Viewer from the Start search.
  2. Expand Windows Logs and select System.
  3. Move to the date and time of the blue screen, failed resume, shutdown, or restart. Filter your review to critical and error events in that same window.
  4. Read the event details for device names, driver files, service names, and power-management messages. Record the provider, event identifier, timestamp, and full description.
  5. Compare the events with changes listed in Device Manager and with anything installed immediately before the first failure.

Event Viewer entries are evidence, not proof by themselves. A warning that occurs hours earlier may be unrelated, while a driver or service event seconds before the bug check is a stronger lead. Preserve the relevant entries before clearing logs or making major changes.

Can changing power settings confirm a 0x9F problem?

Yes. A temporary power-setting change can show whether a specific transition triggers the crash. This is a diagnostic experiment, not a permanent cure.

  1. Note whether the failure occurs during sleep, hibernation, suspend, resume, shutdown, or restart.
  2. Temporarily disable the power-saving feature associated with that trigger using Windows’ power settings.
  3. Repeat the same transition under controlled conditions. For example, if resume fails, test sleep and wake without changing unrelated hardware.
  4. If the crash stops, the result strengthens the case for a driver, service, firmware, or device that mishandles that power state.
  5. Restore normal power settings when the test does not help. Leaving a feature disabled can reduce battery life or remove a function without fixing the underlying driver.

A successful test does not identify the exact driver. Use the timing, Device Manager events, and System log to narrow the component before changing more software.

How should I update Windows, drivers, BIOS, and firmware?

Install current software after recording the existing state and collecting useful logs. Updates can correct known power-management compatibility problems, but firmware changes require extra care.

  1. Run Windows Update and install applicable updates for your Windows 11 or Windows 10 edition. Restart when requested and retest the transition that caused the crash.
  2. For a suspected device, obtain the current driver from the computer manufacturer or the component manufacturer. Compare the installed and offered versions in the device’s Properties before changing anything.
  3. Check the PC maker’s support page for BIOS and firmware updates that match the exact model. Follow its power, backup, and interruption warnings; a failed firmware update can leave the computer unusable.
  4. Update one related component at a time when possible. Testing after each change makes it easier to identify which update altered the behavior.
  5. If a new update introduces the failure, roll back that driver or firmware when the manufacturer provides a supported rollback path, and report the compatibility problem to the vendor.

Microsoft’s stop-error guidance also includes relevant hardware and memory tests and an anti-malware scan as part of the investigation. These checks can rule out broader system problems, but they do not establish that the 0x009FADA7 string itself is malicious or that a scan will repair a power-state failure.

What if Windows will not start normally?

Use Safe Mode or Windows recovery to remove the most recent suspect without loading every normal startup driver and service.

  1. Enter the Windows recovery environment from the startup repair options when normal boot fails repeatedly.
  2. Choose Safe Mode. If Windows starts there, avoid reconnecting recently added hardware until the suspect is identified.
  3. In Safe Mode, open Device Manager and disable, roll back, or uninstall the driver or service associated with the timing and Event Viewer evidence.
  4. Restart normally and test the original power transition. If the failure returns, undo the last change and try the next suspect rather than removing several drivers at once.
  5. If the problem started after a software or hardware change and a suitable restore point exists, use System Restore from recovery. Restore points are not always available, and they do not replace personal backups.

Safe Mode is a way to isolate startup software; it is not a permanent operating mode. Once Windows is stable, install a supported replacement driver or firmware package instead of leaving a necessary device disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run hardware, memory, and malware checks?

Yes, particularly when the crash persists after the obvious driver change has been reversed. Microsoft includes hardware and memory tests and an anti-malware scan among stop-error investigation steps.

  • Run the memory and hardware diagnostics supplied by Windows or the computer manufacturer, following the model-specific instructions.
  • Test recently installed hardware separately when possible. Remove a new peripheral temporarily and observe whether the same sleep, resume, or shutdown action still fails.
  • Run an anti-malware scan using your installed security software. A scan is a general health check; the 0x9F documentation does not say that this code proves an infection.
  • Record test results and dates. A clean test narrows the search but does not clear a driver that fails only during a particular power transition.

How do I use a memory dump or WinDbg when the driver is still unknown?

Preserve any available memory dump and the matching Event Viewer entries. Advanced analysis of a documented 0x9F failure may require WinDbg and access to the affected driver’s symbols or source context.

  1. Do not delete the dump before copying it and recording the crash timestamp.
  2. Keep the exact blue-screen wording, stop parameters if shown, Windows build, and list of recent changes with the dump.
  3. Compare the dump’s implicated module with Device Manager and Event Viewer. A named driver is a lead to validate, not an automatic instruction to delete a system file.
  4. If you cannot interpret the dump, send the evidence to the hardware or software vendor. Include the model, driver version, firmware version, Windows edition, reproduction steps, and the time of each failure.

Do not download an arbitrary replacement DLL or driver because a search result names one. Use the manufacturer’s supported package and keep a rollback path.

What changes between Windows 11 and Windows 10?

The core troubleshooting path is the same on both versions: verify the text, identify the trigger, inspect Device Manager and Event Viewer, test power settings, update or roll back the responsible component, and use Safe Mode or System Restore when necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows 11: Start search and the Settings layout may place recovery and power controls in different screens than older guides show. Search for the named tool rather than following an outdated screenshot.
  • Windows 10: The same Device Manager driver actions and System-log review apply. Manufacturer support pages may list different driver packages for the same hardware model.
  • Both versions: BIOS, firmware, chipset, storage, graphics, network, USB, Bluetooth, and docking updates must match the exact computer or component. A package for another model can create new instability.

The documented 0x0000009F meaning does not change simply because the computer runs Windows 10 instead of Windows 11; the exact driver and firmware compatibility still depend on the model and installed build.

When should I stop troubleshooting and contact the vendor?

Escalate when the failure continues after reversing recent changes, testing the implicated device, applying supported updates, and checking recovery options. Vendor assistance is appropriate when the dump names a proprietary driver, the system cannot boot without Safe Mode, or a BIOS or firmware update is involved.

  • Provide the exact code as displayed, including whether ADA7 appears every time.
  • State the trigger and whether temporarily changing power settings altered it.
  • Attach relevant System-log events and any memory dump, along with the Windows edition and build.
  • List hardware, driver, service, BIOS, and firmware changes in date order.
  • Describe every rollback, disable, uninstall, update, diagnostic test, and System Restore attempt.

This evidence prevents a support technician from treating an unverified 0x009FADA7 string as a confirmed Microsoft stop code and helps determine whether the real issue is a driver power transition, firmware compatibility, hardware response, or an unrelated application message.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, show the current and recommended versions, install official drivers, and provide driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a 2-day free trial requires no credit card before a subscription. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

How can I prevent another driver power-state failure?

Keep a record of stable driver and firmware versions, create a restore point before major changes when available, and install model-specific packages rather than unrelated driver bundles. When a new device is added, test sleep, resume, shutdown, and restart before adding another change. If a failure returns, the shorter change history makes the responsible component easier to isolate.

Most importantly, preserve the distinction between the unverified 0x009FADA7 text and Microsoft’s documented 0x0000009F. That distinction determines whether you should investigate a Windows kernel power transition or follow the diagnostic path for the program or vendor utility that displayed the longer string.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is error 0x009FADA7 proof that my PC has a virus?

No. The full string has no authoritative Microsoft definition, and the documented 0x0000009F code concerns an invalid or incomplete driver power transition. An anti-malware scan can be part of a general stop-error investigation, but the code alone does not establish an infection.

Can I keep sleep and hibernation disabled permanently?

You can use that change as a diagnostic workaround, but it removes power-saving behavior and may reduce battery life or convenience. If disabling the transition stops the crash, continue looking for the driver, service, firmware, or device that mishandles it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a 0x9F blue screen mean the hardware must be replaced?

Not necessarily. A driver, service, BIOS, firmware package, or recently added peripheral can all prevent a power request from completing. Replace hardware only after logs, driver tests, supported updates, and manufacturer diagnostics point to a physical fault.

Will reinstalling Windows definitely fix this error?

A clean installation is not the first-line test for an unidentified power-state failure and can erase useful logs and dumps. Identify the trigger and implicated device first; if the issue survives a supported software rollback and hardware checks, discuss a reinstall with the manufacturer while preserving evidence.
