What should I record before changing anything?
Write down the context while the message is still visible. This prevents a generic code from sending you down the wrong repair path.
- Copy the complete error text, including any file name, application name, hexadecimal values, and buttons such as Retry, Cancel, or More information.
- Note whether it appeared while launching a game, installing or removing software, updating Windows, signing in, shutting down, or performing another task.

Check Reliability Monitor
- Press the Windows key, type reliability history, and open View reliability history.
- Click the day marked with a red X at the time of the failure.
- Expand Application failures, Windows failures, and Critical events. Open View technical details and copy the failing application, module, and exception text.
Reliability Monitor can show which executable failed even when the dialog exposes only 0x80002256. The record is evidence about the surrounding failure; it does not prove that the listed module defines this code.
Check Event Viewer
- Right-click Start and choose Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs, then inspect Application and System around the recorded time.
- Use Filter Current Log to narrow the time range. Open an event and copy its Source, Event ID, Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and the General and Details text.
Do not delete logs while troubleshooting. If the error occurred during setup or removal, also inspect Applications and Services Logs for entries created by that installer or application.

What quick checks are safe on Windows 11 and 10?
Restart once and test the same operation
Choose Start > Power > Restart, not Shut down followed by a power-on, and retry the exact operation once. A restart clears a process that failed to release a file and completes some pending servicing actions. If the code returns, continue collecting evidence rather than repeating restarts indefinitely.
Install pending Windows updates
- On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when requested.
- Return to the same page and check again until no additional update is offered.
Updates can replace damaged servicing files or fix an application compatibility issue, but installing them is a general maintenance step, not evidence that Microsoft maps 0x80002256 to a particular update.
Run the built-in troubleshooters relevant to the symptom
Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Use Repair or Reset for a Microsoft Store app

Could damaged Windows files be involved?
If Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer shows repeated Windows component failures, run Microsoft’s standard image and system-file checks from an elevated terminal. These commands are broad integrity checks, not code-specific remedies.
- Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. It may take time and can appear idle at a percentage for several minutes. - After DISM reports completion, run
sfc /scannow. Let the scan reach 100 percent. - Restart Windows and repeat the operation that produced 0x80002256.
Read the final message. If System File Checker says it repaired files, keep the result with your event notes. If it says it could not repair some files, do not delete files manually; save the CBS log and move to the recovery options below.
What should I do if a disk or file-system problem is suspected?

- Open Terminal (Admin).
- Run

How can Safe Mode or a clean boot isolate the cause?
Use Safe Mode as a comparison
- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Recovery on Windows 10.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- Attempt only the diagnostic action that is safe in that mode, then restart normally.
If the error disappears in Safe Mode, a startup service, shell extension, security product, or driver may be involved. Safe Mode does not identify which one, so use a clean boot or the application’s logs to narrow it down.
Perform a clean boot
- Press Windows+R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - On Services, select Hide all Microsoft services, then choose Disable all. Do not disable Microsoft services before checking the box.
- Open Task Manager from the Startup tab and disable nonessential startup items.
- Restart and test. Re-enable items in small groups afterward to identify a conflict.
Return to Normal startup in System Configuration when finished. A clean boot is a temporary diagnostic state, not a permanent performance setting.

What if the error began after an update or system change?
Undo one recent change at a time so you can tell what altered the result. If a device driver was updated immediately before the error, use Device Manager, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when Windows offers that option. For a broader Windows change, open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore and choose a restore point created before the first occurrence. Should I scan for malware?
The code alone is not evidence of malware. If the failure is accompanied by unknown startup items, browser redirection, disabled security settings, or unexplained file changes, run a full scan with the security software already installed and apply its recommended quarantine process. Reset or reinstall only as a last resort
