Many update and repair actions require elevation. Sign in with an administrator account, or be ready to approve a User Account Control prompt. If this is a managed work or school computer, policy restrictions may prevent changes; contact the administrator rather than bypassing them.
Record recent changes
Note recently installed updates, graphics or chipset drivers, antivirus products, game launchers, hardware, and system-cleaning utilities. A timeline often reveals whether the message began after an update or after an application change.

- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any recommended change, restart when prompted, and try Windows Update again.
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter. Labels can vary slightly by build, so search Settings for “troubleshoot” if the path differs.

Which basic Windows Update checks matter?
- Power: Plug in a laptop or tablet. Avoid interrupting a restart or firmware stage.
- Connectivity: Confirm that ordinary websites load, then retry without a captive portal, unstable VPN, or metered connection that blocks the download.
- Administrator access: Use an account permitted to install updates.
- External hardware: Disconnect unnecessary USB storage, docks, card readers, printers, and other peripherals. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, and network hardware needed to operate the computer.
- Time and storage: Ensure the clock is correct and that the Windows drive has enough free space for the update. Remove only files you recognize; do not delete arbitrary system folders.
Restart after making changes and run Windows Update once more. If the error returns, preserve the new timestamp and KB number so the failed attempt can be matched to logs.
How do I reset the Windows Update cache?
Use this branch only when the failure is clearly a Windows Update download or installation problem. Microsoft notes that corrupt files in the update cache can cause errors. This procedure is not a proven cure for the unidentified 0x80004290 value.
- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - In the Services window, right-click Windows Update and select Stop. Leave the window open.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder, not the parent
Windowsfolder. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and retry. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart Windows, reconnect required hardware, and check for updates.
Windows will rebuild the cache as it needs it. The first scan after a reset can take longer because update metadata and packages must be downloaded again. If the same KB fails with a different, documented code, troubleshoot that code rather than continuing to repeat the cache reset.
What if 0x80004290 appeared during a Windows 11 upgrade?
An in-place upgrade or clean-install setup failure follows a different path from a routine monthly update. Microsoft recommends checking hardware, drivers, security software, nonessential applications, and disk space.

Remove nonessential hardware
Shut down the computer and disconnect external drives, docks, printers, capture devices, and other accessories that Setup does not need. Reconnect them after the upgrade succeeds. Do not disconnect the boot drive, display required to operate the machine, or input devices without another way to control Setup.
Bring Windows and drivers up to date first
Install available Windows updates and manufacturer-provided driver updates while the current installation still starts normally. A setup failure involving a driver may display a different code; Microsoft says that errors beginning with 0xC1900101 are usually driver errors. That statement does not assign a meaning to 0x80004290, so record the exact code if it changes.
Review security software and nonessential applications
Microsoft’s upgrade guidance includes temporarily uninstalling non-Microsoft antivirus and removing nonessential software when they interfere with Setup. Use the product’s documented uninstall process, restart, and reinstall protection after the upgrade. Do not leave a computer unprotected on an untrusted network while making this change.
Check free disk space
Keep sufficient free space on the Windows system drive for the upgrade’s downloaded files, temporary working files, and rollback data. Windows Setup reports its own requirement for the edition and path you selected; follow that value rather than relying on a generic number. If space is tight, move personal files or uninstall applications you recognize, then empty the Recycle Bin.

Write down the phase in which Setup stopped and copy the complete message. If Setup produces a log path or a more specific error after the next attempt, save it. Contact Microsoft support with that information instead of translating 0x80004290 from an unrelated web result.

Should I run DISM and SFC?
Run these commands only when there is evidence of Windows component-store or system-file corruption, such as repeated servicing failures, damaged system files, or a diagnostic result that points to corruption. Microsoft documents them as corruption-mitigation tools, not as a code-specific fix for 0x80004290.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - At the elevated prompt, run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. Do not close the window because the percentage appears to pause during some stages. - Run
Sfc.exe /Scannowafter DISM completes. - Restart Windows, then retry the operation that originally failed.
If either command reports that it could not complete, copy the exact result and error number. Do not substitute random DISM switches or delete component-store files. A successful scan means the tool found and handled the condition it checks; it does not prove that an application-specific error has been repaired.
What if the code belongs to a game or another application?
When the dialog names a game, launcher, mod manager, installer, or other program, treat it as that program’s error until its publisher documents otherwise. Check the application’s own log folder, update notes, and support instructions. Record the application version, Windows build, graphics or audio hardware, and the exact action that triggered the message.
Do not replace a system DLL, edit the registry, or download a “fixed” executable solely because a web page associates it with 0x80004290. Those actions can break unrelated programs and make later diagnosis harder. If the application was installed through a managed game library, use its built-in file verification or repair option only after recording the original error and only when the publisher documents that workflow.

- Choose Windows Logs > System for servicing, restart, and hardware events, or Windows Logs > Application for program crashes.
- Use Filter Current Log to narrow the time window around the failure.
- Open matching entries and note Source, Event ID, Level, and the full General and Details text.
- Save the details as text and compare the timestamp with the failed update, upgrade, or game launch.
The source and event ID identify the component that emitted the entry. A bare hexadecimal value copied from a log, without those fields, cannot establish a Windows meaning.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek support?
Escalate when the error persists after the branch that matches its origin, when Setup repeatedly rolls back, when the computer cannot boot normally, or when logs point to storage, memory, firmware, or hardware failure. Provide support with the complete message, application or Windows component, KB number if present, Windows edition and build, recent changes, Event Viewer details, and the results of any DISM or SFC run.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 device can continue to run, but upgrade planning should account for that support status and for whether the hardware meets Windows 11 requirements. Do not start an upgrade solely to make an undocumented hexadecimal code disappear; first identify what is producing it and verify that the target installation is supported.
