Error 0x80005220 is not identified in Microsoft’s standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 error references. The clearest documented meaning comes from Advantech SoftMotion, where the code is Dsp_InvalidPathRange and indicates that a motion-path range supplied to Acm_GpMoveSelPath is invalid. If you saw the code in Windows Update, an upgrade, or another application, first identify that source; the same hexadecimal value can be defined by different software. The correct fix is therefore to verify the originating program, then either follow Microsoft’s guidance for the actual Update-history code or correct the path indexes and range arguments in SoftMotion.
What does error 0x80005220 mean?

How can I tell where 0x80005220 came from?
Record the source before changing anything. The application that displayed the message determines which documentation and repair path apply.
- Capture the complete message. Write down the exact hexadecimal value, any text beside it, and the time it appeared. Take a screenshot if the dialog may disappear.
- Identify the active program. Note whether the message came from Windows Update, Windows Setup, a driver installer, Advantech SoftMotion, a motion-control application, or another vendor’s software.
- List connected equipment. For a controller message, record the controller model, motion card, communication adapter, and the project or routine that was running. The exact code match in the documentation concerns Advantech SoftMotion and the PCI-1245L motion controller.
- Check whether the event is repeatable. Note the command, path selection, or update action that immediately precedes the error. Do not assume that a code shown in a third-party window is generated by Windows.
Do not use the hexadecimal value alone to choose a registry cleaner, replace hardware, or reinstall Windows. Those actions do not establish which component generated the message.

Microsoft does not define 0x80005220 in its general Windows 10/11 error tables or its upgrade-error reference. If the number appeared during an update or upgrade, use Windows’ own history to find the code that Microsoft can actually interpret.
Find the code in Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Update history.
- Expand the relevant quality, feature, driver, or other update entry.
- Copy the complete failure code and the update name. If the entry shows a different code, use that code for Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions.
Find the code in Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select View update history.
- Open the failed update entry and record the code shown there.
If Update history does not contain 0x80005220, that is further evidence that the number came from another program running during the update attempt. Preserve the update name and the complete dialog text when contacting Microsoft or the software vendor.

How do I fix 0x80005220 in Advantech SoftMotion?
In SoftMotion, fix the arguments supplied to Acm_GpMoveSelPath and make them agree with the motion group’s path buffer. The error means the requested range is invalid, not that Windows has a generic system-file error.
1. Check the path-buffer size
Determine how many paths are currently available to the motion group at the moment the command runs. The valid indexes depend on that buffer state. Advantech’s example uses a ten-path buffer, where the valid indexes are 0 through 9; that example is not a Windows-wide constant and should not be copied to a project with a different buffer size.

Check the code or configuration that creates, loads, or replaces the path buffer. A buffer may contain fewer entries than expected after a failed import, a reset, a new project configuration, or a routine that clears previously loaded paths.
2. Validate both indexes
Ensure that every index passed to the path-selection call falls inside the available range. If the buffer contains N paths, the usual zero-based range is 0 through N-1; confirm the indexing convention used by your specific SoftMotion API and project.

- An index below the first valid entry is invalid.
- An index equal to or above the number of available paths is invalid.
- An index that refers to a path that was never loaded or has been removed is invalid.
3. Enforce the ordering rule
Check that StartIndex <= EndIndex. A request with a starting path after its ending path is an invalid range even when both numbers are individually within the buffer’s limits.
4. Compare the call with the buffer at runtime
Log or inspect the path count, StartIndex, and EndIndex immediately before Acm_GpMoveSelPath executes. This catches a common sequencing problem: code calculates indexes for one buffer, then another routine reloads, clears, or shortens the buffer before the move command runs.
5. Correct the routine and test a known-good range
Modify the project so it obtains the current path count and rejects an invalid request before calling the API. Test a range that is unquestionably present, then test boundary values deliberately. For a ten-path example, a request covering paths 0 through 9 is within the documented example range, while 10 is outside it; use your project’s actual count instead of assuming ten.
6. Recheck after resets and project reloads
If the error returns after reconnecting the controller, restarting the application, or loading a project, verify that path data is restored before the selection command runs. A successful test immediately after manual path loading does not prove that the same buffer exists during automatic startup.
What should I do if another vendor’s application shows the code?
Use that vendor’s documentation and support channel. Hexadecimal values are not globally reserved Windows meanings; a manufacturer can assign the same number to its own validation, communication, or device state.

- Look for the application name, module name, or library name in the dialog title and event log.
- Search that vendor’s manual using the complete code and its accompanying text, not just the number.
- Check the application’s project, device, or API logs for the operation that failed.
- Confirm whether the code is generated locally, returned by a controller, or translated by a wrapper library.
- Send support the full message, software version, Windows edition, hardware model, project state, and a reproducible sequence.
